The main problem I'm having with this is that you should be able to see the transition from her right cheekbone to her forhead. What you have drawn is it disappearing behind the eye which does happen but not at such a subtle angle as you have here.

Doing some album covers for a couple of metalbands.

I want to make the hyena a bit more intimidating, but i'm not sure how to do it. I'm not as familiar with how their facemuscles pull their features, so i don't really know what to do with it.
>>
>>2549784
this is way above what a regular band gets. just call it a day or charge them if you have to learn hyena anatomy.

This looks good man! The only problem is it's not overly intimidating as you say. Right now he looks like he is kinda yawning or something. He's got his tongue hanging out, he's fairly relaxed, the only thing scary are the teeth.

I would try to emphasize the aggressive nature of it. Body language is important, get a snarl going where the upper lip is raised to show the gums, get the tongue held in the mouth, get the ear a bit flatter against the body, get some scrunching of the skin near the eye etc.

You can also get some more aggressive shape language in there. I played up the height of the shoulders so there is more of a taper down to the head, and then I added more of a mane and gave it all these pointy tufts of hair. Playing up the orange underlight from the flames too might help.

Paintover was done with a trackpad on a laptop so keep in mind it's rather crudely done.

>>2549816

Forgot to mention too that you probably want some harder edges and shapes in there as currently the way you painted the fur makes him look really soft and cuddly like a teddy bear.

Not too bad honestly. The shadows are the weakest part in my opinion as their values are a little inconsistent and the shapes are a little ambiguous at times. Essentially they don't add a whole lot to the forms of the head as a whole.

You also are using charcoal on a toothed paper, but you are still treating it like pencil. It would do you good I think to use a more shape and tone based approach for these. Nathan Fowkes' charcoals are a good reference for this. I also like Mark Tennant's charcoals which have a nice abstract quality to their design, and impeccable drawing.

All in all though the best thing to do for you is volume. There's not much point in giving a longwinded crit on a 30 minute head drawing, especially when it is done at a reasonable level like this. The best thing for you to do would be to hammer out a ton more 30 minute head drawings (as well as maybe a couple long pose ones and some shorter ones too).

I'm no where near as good as you but the face just doesn't look tense. When I look at my dog when she's angry she upturns her nose and the skin around her snout bunches up. Her lips stress out.

Here's a paintover for you, done on laptop trackpad so a bit sloppy but the point still stands.

You have two main issues here, both of which would be fixed by taking a step back from your work and viewing it from a distance. The first is proportions--he has massive legs, a tiny head, and all sorts of more minor things too. The second issue has to do with your values.

The value problems stem from being overly interested in showing off all the tiny form changes you see and trying to utilize every bit of your anatomical knowledge. All these small forms need to be subservient to the larger masses and the overall image. Right now you have a ton of value changes in the shadow shapes and a ton of value changes in the light...you are overstating the halftones and the reflected light. Careful to not draw things from a formulaic point of view either, like not ever terminator needs to be fully black, and not every tiny shape needs to be outlines and pronounced. There are so many small form changes you are excited by, and you make the tiniest bump on the torso for example stand out and pack a punch. The torso is basically an egg shape, and you need to remember that. Compressing your value ranges and treating the image in larger masses will really help the clarity and strength of the image shine through.

At least that is my opinion on things. You are doing it along the lines of how Watts approaches stuff which in my mind gives a strange appearance to form and often has a metallic look to skin because of weird value choices.

Can anyone here come 'close' to colouring like this?

>>

But what I am asking is what wrong with it, he's a great fuckin artist and I like his style, I'm not copying an art he's already done with a few changes and claiming its mine, its an inspiration I'm not ripping him off, an still what I did looks like shit compared to what he's currently doing.

Use cleaner shapes. The values are not well defined- remember a general rule is that the further away something is, it should be lighter. Because of your bad values, I can't tell if that rock on the bottom left belongs on that hill in the foreground or it's part of the structure in the midground.

This composition seems to lack a focus in my opinion. If you'd like to focus mainly on the knight I suggest moving him closer to the center. If you'd like to focus on the scene as a whole I suggest moving him farther off-center while adding detail to the surrounding elements and background.
The anatomy could use a little work here and there (elbows should reach a little lower), but otherwise its good work, keep at it.

only thing preventing this from being truly amazing is the fact that the curvature of the crown suddenly stops towards the left (from the viewers perspective). actually it's the same towards the right. around the middle the curvature of form flows beautifully.

Looks pretty cool anon. I tried a paintover but it didn't turn out that well. I wanted to fix some drawing errors but my corrections are still a bit off because I am using the trackpad on my laptop. Basically we are viewing him from below, so we should see more of the underside of his nose and stuff, and the features need to project outwards off his face a bit more (even if he has a flat nose type). His eyes are also pointing in different directions from each other and can use some redrawing of the forms.

Otherwise it is just some small lighting/colour changes I made. His face is very pink/red at the moment so I knocked that down a notch. The rimlight is really boring at the moment so I tried getting more interesting shapes there that also describe the forms better.

Hope this helps.

Fashion isn't always comfortable, especially when it accentuates sexual features. See: high heel shoes, corsets, and latex. I think the bigger issue would be making shirts that fit boobs properly since there is so much variation. If you could make it work though I'm sure it would be popular.

It doesn't exactly read that way right now, but the rest looks really nice. Maybe the cloud cover through the horizon needs more lighting contrast?

Very nice. If going for realism, I would say deepen the values a little. The contrast will make it pop. Maybe play with saturation, as well.

Ok, so say the shading on his right arm was finished (not including hand). Is it the simplicity of the shapes that makes it feel off? I know it kind of looks pillow shaded, but the light source is kind of direct and a little above.

There's some really strange edges in this. Face and hair looks like you ran it through a median filter then the leg silhouettes have like this razor edge with weird sloppy grey or saturated strokes behind it. if you are who i think you are, you tend to draw in this style a lot! i feel like it might be limiting you a bit. i might just be projecting because i'm trying to experiment more, but you might want to try something new and see where it takes you! we've already seen sketches like these for a year or so now, i think, and the shapes a good, the designs have some good character to them, but don't grow too complacent.

Your thumb reads really nice but notice how the light hits harder on his head/shoulder/arm, push those values.
Also draw his shadow, that'll put on him on some solid ground rather than him looking like he's floating.
Other than that this is nice , you may want to try some harder brushes, the ones you're using right now have that muddy feel to them even if it's just for a study, and experiment with brushes with more texture (depending on what kind of material you're rendering).

I never post in these threads but I do love this. Literally the only reason I even respond is because I've been laughing for like 10 minutes over that dudes fucking expression. Such good shit.

If I had to offer any critque, keep in mind when you get to this skill level a lot of it becomes subjective so take what I say with a huge grain of salt. I'm also not as skilled as you, so take it with even MORE grains of salt.

If you want something to focus on in the future I'd say... The role of hue and value in atmosphere and composition. I agree with the other anon on color and composition; for me it's more about the grays and the background. Obviously you're trying to work a more muted palette, which unfortunately means there is a lot more weight on the subtle details in the grays of the armor. There's not enough variety, and the color/values aren't working to support the composition you're trying to build. If you're doing master studies try to look for 'busy' compositions with lots of similar figures or objects that still manage to show variety without being obtrusive.

My eye naturally rolls along the cape, then down her left arm and face to the right arm and naturally wanting to follow the curve swooping toward the right. Bit as I move onto her right arm it loses that momentum I got in the foreground. I feel like you're thinking of the background as 'less detail' rather than 'more subtle detail' if that makes sense. Also its clear you got lazy on the dude on the left in the sallet. I only call you on it because LOOK at that painting in the foreground you shit, it's obvious you love painting armor and you're fucking good at it. Don't sell your abilities short.

That being said piece is fantastic mate, absolutely fantastic. I love the painting on the foremost man's armor most, delicious. Enjoyed looking at your piece for several minutes, is both pleasing to look at and that fucking dude makes me lose my shit.
