oh ok, The reason I though it was a man is her very short and thick neck and also very horizontal/thick eyebrows. I don't know if you can erase or paint over your stuff but here is what you could fix. just my 2cents.

a much slender and longer neck, smaller jaw line, and thinner eyebrows. I also think you left out the most important aspect of female eyes is their very long eyelashes towards the outer side of their eyes. hope this helps.

Style direction? Good, bad?
The main thing i've changed is brush minimum width to 0% whereas usually my style is with 65%. I've always been conflicted with style direction since I want to go realistic and stylized at the same time. I feel I'm trying to go two directions at once with these two slightly differing styles.

You are not going to fool anyone with this picture for ants, it's pretty bad still. You are the guy who kept polishing that painting of a beach right? With the rock clouds and all. The perspective of this landscape is better, but you didn't really improve in much else.
You really need to practice using photos as reference. Find pictures of rocks and try to copy them, then trees, then sand, do these rendering studies while you practice the fundamentals of drawing, color theory, and when you feel confortable enough to do another landscape, try copying a photo of a landscape, until you get good enough to try a drawing from imagination.

well this is my first time attempting quite a few things, a night scene, cityscape, something mechy (the bridge), a 'grander' scale, the little details like how to draw forests that are far away

Cute. The lead shapes on the tree are better on the right image though. The bug bites in the foreground leaves are distractive especially on the right image. And the leaf that overlaps the girl near her bum is also distracting and seems sort of sexual. I would redo the pose on the right as she would fall over like that. Have you tried the pose yourself to see how you would smell flowers?

If you want to commission, which for the record you shouldn't really be doing in the drawthread, you really need examples or a more specific description of what you want. For a fully coloured painting of a full body most artists will charge upwards of $60-70.

If it's referenced from a photo it's fine to me. It's when it starts being referenced from other art that it becomes a problem, especially anime referenced from anime. Since the artistic process *is* the stylization, that defeats the purpose of being original. Obviously doesn't apply to general style guidelines such as how to draw faces in a certain way.

its just odd alternating between good and bad in your drawing, shit face, okay neck, shit trapezius, good deltoid, shit elbow connection, good understand of elbows, shit understand of size of elbows, good understand of cross hartching, bad understandinf of folds, shit understand of hands (completely).

It's really crazy. How did you train to reach your current level? I'm always baffled when people reach "hidden levels" or levels that shouldn't exist but somehow do for some people.

It's a nice drawing. It's obviously stylized so why not let it be that way? Not everything has to be superrenderedrealisticportrait#544.jpg

if you were trying to make it more realistic you'd probably want to have the ear be closer to the nose(shorten the depth of the jaw), bring the tip of the nose down a bit, and maybe don't have the brow jut out as much, the cheekbone is more robust than you'd typically see in life also. Kind of hard to say without seeing the model(assuming there was one)

>>2531752

on the right figure, her left shoulder looks a bit odd. I'd brush up on the teres major insertion and origin points and maybe consider the acromion process(this is an important landmark to learn if you don't know of it) if you haven't; idk if it'd be visible from that angle but you'd probably see an indication of it.

>>2531525
That's some lovely pen work. I don't know if it's still up and I'd imagine you've seen it already but ccsears has a pretty good thread on penwork on conceptart. he talks about how detail is synonymous with value when working with pen and stresses giving indications of detail rather than trying to add everything.

Like if you wanted to draw a lit chadelier(fuck my spelling) you'd have to add little implications of filigree and leave some areas blank. just a concept to think about when working in pen. Her right leg feels a bit awkward. You've sort of overlapped the heel onto the other foot which has something to do with it but I'd imagine we'd see more of her right hamstring/glute area also; idk though if it's not in the ref it's not in the ref :l

>>2531387
The degree of rim lighting in this piece is probably a little excessive. I'd reserve it for areas you want to "pop" more. Having rim lighting everywhere in a painting is a bit like a having a song that's one long guitar solo, or watching a michael bay movie where the whole thing tries to be epic and loses context

The thing is I'm painting from imagination, and I have, like, no idea how to make the colors work better. I want the colors to be slightly stylized, to have a mix of red and purple hues. but while I can find references for form (what's a rainy field/forest supposed to look like), I feel like I can't find or use references for color. So I'm left to do whatever and I don't know what that is.

Exactly what's your issue with the face? Just the fact that it's stylized? Please tell me exactly why these things look bad instead of just ranting about how bad they are.

Unfortunately, I don't have any formal training. I just draw. I read books and tutorials and try and copy what they do and reproduce that in my own art.

The pose and anatomy is really awkward. The sword arm especially is weird since it is pressed into her body and reads really flat, and then her legs are pretty odd looking too.

I didn't correct too many drawing errors though because I did this with the trackpad on my laptop, so I just fixed the shoulders a bit and the far foot slightly but I didn't have much precision.

Otherwise it felt a bit washed out so I brought in some darker shadows and more warmth to the skin in general.

Hope this helps!

No. I've done freelance on and off for a few years. Right now I have no work though and haven't done any work in many months. I'm pretty bad at business and finding work and I hate posting on social media so I'm sort of under the radar a lot, and last year I took a year off of fb and skype and lost contact with any regular clients I had. I tried to find some fulltime stuff recently and nothing panned out, though I almost got a job for CD Projekt but failed their art test in the end. Now I'm trying for freelance but not getting any responses. I might just get a shitty min wage job and do art as a hobby instead of as a career? I dunno. I don't really like commercial work much and have conservative ideals about how I approach art which means my skillsets are outdated a bit (no 3d or photobashing).

This is driving me a little bit crazy. Any ideas to make it more interesting? Ideas for lighting? The idea is this princess is kindof anti social, and she is also the queen of bugs. Yup. So in the end she's going to be covered with bugs and stuff and the bugs are pestering her father (the king) and his horse as he walks over to like scold her or take her back to the kingdom or something
>>
>>2531379
Yeah, I think the master study was a wee joke, but I really like this mermaid Nice use of subtle blobs of color

>>2533960

>>
>>2531752
Don't add armour, the nudity is more subtly creepy. Only advice is to sharpen everything up, right now with the low contrast it almost looks like an old timey photo which in itself is strange... infact, hey wouldn't it be neat if you actually made this a photo? Like shrink it a bit and show the slightly ruffled corners of the photo, like an old polaroid, or photo from the early 1900's, then on the corners of the whole picture show that the photo is sitting on a table or something.

Just a neat idea to add some story.
>>
>>2533969
shhhhhhhh

I should have changed the file name...

What do you think about the picture though? I'm kindof in a hurry for advices
>>
>>2533981
Well the first thing that stands out is the horse. Because the guy in front covers part of it, you can't see the foreshortening so the horse just looks like it has no torso. The hind legs look really strange with their current placement.

Otherwise I agree it is a bit boring as an image, but it's not really complete with the bugs yet and you say you want to change the lighting so it is hard to say. Maybe try a more dramatic lighting? I think a queen of bugs in a swamp should be a bit grosser, like more of a dark murky scenario. Like you could make it dark and rainy and wet and grimy, and that way the king's pose still makes sense as he covers from the rainfall. Once you add in a lot of flying insects though it should look more interesting.

Also it doesn't really make sense that a king would come alone (and dismount too). There probably should be some guards/escorts in the background.
>>
>>2533985
I do plan on adding rain and making her a bit dirty and wet and though I think I'm going to leave the lighting mostly the same for time reasons I'll try to make it more contrasty at least. Good idea on the water and Soldiers. That might take time to do but it seems necessary
>>

The industry REQUIRES 3D and Using Photos to get that crisp photoreal look their engines can produce.
The industry loves 2D artists with a decent grasp of 3D but they can't find that many 3D artists with a grasp of 2D so you have the hardest part in good shape. I would still reconsider your topic choice and pallet.

You need art that can fit what people sre buying, It's supply and demand. Business 101. Your topics aren't in demmand so you won't selk. You don't market yourself so you won't reach the audience that might need your work.
Paint a couple of scenes from a young adult sci fi franchise and watch the work start pouring in, Once you fix your blending and skin tones.
Good luck!

it doesnt hold your hand at all.
>>
>>2534247
not the anon you asked

personally, it's the single RPG I like. I have the bad habit of creating another character each time I get bored of the current one, and in normal rpgs where you have to grind a lot, you lose everything since experience and items don't carry over

but in dark souls it's just the first run which takes you a lot, up to months depending on how fast you learn and how much you play, after you learned the insides out you can finish the game in a few hours, which for me means I don't lose a lot of time reaching where I left which the previous charater

another thing which I like: you can start a game as a solder, and finish as a sorcerer, a thief, or freaking Guts. One of the reason I would start over and over again is because I would get bored of a class, but in dark souls you can combine them how you want. damn, you can even finish the game how you want: want to kill everybody? you can do that. what to run from everybody? you can do that (in ~95% of cases, some enemies are just in the way). want to finish the game with a big ass sword? you can do that. want to finish the game with a dagger? take a wild guess

dark souls is how a rpg should be done
>>
>>2534247

Totally different experience to Skyrim, for one it's far more of an action RPG. Much less dialogue, a lot more combat, and the combat is far more lethal. It emphasizes timing, stamina management, and positioning.
The environments are really good and the storytelling is interesting, it's far more subtle and generally encourages you to infer it rather than telling you.

If you don't know much about it I really recommend you do it blind. Guides take a lot of the fun out of the first playthrough, since the games are generally full of surprises.

>>2534099
They were looking for an illustrator and actually they emailed me. They saw my work on artstation and approached me, but of course wanted me to do an art test. I spent a week on it and did what I thought was a really solid job, but them they said it wasn't realistic enough, which I'm guessing means I didn't use photos even though they didn't specify it (I rendered it very tightly manually over a week, so it was realistic). I can't post the image or talk about it though, I had to sign some some insane NDAs that carry super heavy penalties if I break it. Too bad because it's a solid piece that if I had in my portfolio would help get work.

>>2534104
Nope, I just like saturated reds. The image was boring colour-wise if I treated it more naturally so I made things intense. I've been experimenting a bit with using whatever colours I want instead of what should be there. People like Ruanjia and Min Yum use some really saturated colours and make it work, so I'd like to have the freedom to do that myself. Some of the intense colour in there too is the original linework I didn't paint out entirely because I liked the look, but maybe I went overboard with it? But yes, I am aware that in that situation red would not look like that at all.

>>2534114
I've thought about it. Hasn't been a great time for me to be honest.

>>2534146
Thanks, and that looks awesome too

>>2534109
I wouldn't say it REQUIRES 3d yet, but it is definitely an asset to have. I agree though that my style and subject matter and stuff isn't really that sellable. I intentionally avoid airbrushed skin and contrasty thing and rimlights and everything else that is trendy. I hate most trends that are happening right now and make a concerted effort to not be a part of them, but yeah it probably hurts my career at the moment. Ideally I will get good enough that I can do whatever I want and still get work. Someone like Theo Prins is a great example of someone successful who doesn't play by the rules.

Well, it's pretty stiff. First of all, you're kind of flyswatting the figures. Looks like you've gone out of your way to avoid foreshortening by placing all limbs in profile kind of how beginners draw poses that hides the hands and feet.

It also doesn't look like they are laying down and it doesn't look like they are touching. It kinda just looks like two floating figures drawn on two separate layers. You would benefit from studying how hentai artists bunch up fleshy forms that interact between characters and from the pull of tight fabrics and such (pic related). It's super key to erotic art imo.

You need to make some studies, bro. Use the color picker frequently, but only after you've done your best guess at matching the hue and value. That should give you a reference for how off you are.

thanks anon, still learning to paint so will try with hard brushes next time

It feels like there's an extreme downtilt on her left nostril, and that isn't represented in any changes on the right area of the face (the one that's hidden by the nose). Either the nostril's position is off, or you might've omitted something from the other side of the face, because that one part looks asymmetrical. Can we see your ref?

The rest looks excellent, especially the colors & values. As another anon mentioned, experimenting with a mix of harder brushes will allow you to capture more dynamism in your paintings.

It is impossible to tell what's going on here. I mean good for you if someone is paying you anyway, because it's honestly just bad in every way.

I would move the trees on the right over more and crop.

This was the reference, thanks for the critique, the left side of the face is a bit blurred in the ref so I tried to capture as best as I could

Here are some of the changes I'd propose.

If you bring the nostril up a bit, soften the nasolabial crease (which isn't as accentuated in your ref), and soften the philtrum (which also isn't as accentuated), you get rid of most of the symmetry problems with the nose.

I think part of your problem stems from the fact that philtrum doesn't look in perspective, and that your nasolabial crease starts too low (making the barrel of the mouth seem small). Just toning down these elements a bit seems to help with both perspective & likeness.

A quick thing for DED

Some things I'm trying to improve at are:
-Not drawing directly from reference
-Lighting/shading
-limited palette
-Conveying materials/ textural contrast

Any tips are appreciated

Right, because when whites draw anyone else they just look like whites, right?

Great looking environment and colours!
Figure is quite stiff though, and face is pretty weak, but apart from that it's great.
Hope you end up finding some steady work with your art anon.

Art tests for fulltime positions are extremely common. There's a ton of competition and they want to make sure you are a good fit. But yeah it sucks that I can't use it and wasn't paid. I used to be against them on principle, but now I just do them because if you don't you simply won't get the job so there's no choice in the matter. It's an oversaturated field.

Thanks for the comments on my piece.

Artstation is a good way to get visibility on a portfolio I guess? I have my own website where I host my own images though and that's what I send to clients in emails and stuff.
