when starting out. is there things in life that i should avoid drawing like an action figure/model i have or a poster in my room and instead do more basic things like my tv and the boxes i keep my trading card decks in or disregard everything and draw everything regardless what it is.

Any tips on tackling drawing an entire room? i find it really hard and my stuff always comes out flat and incorrect as shit. I figured doing perspective made easy may be better before i do more life drawing to at least have an idea of how to make it look correct. Pic= last life drawing and a fun one for me. My left hand.

I suggest being very comfortable with drawing 3D shapes before doing an entire room. Most things in your room like a bed, tv, desk etc. are basically elongated cubes. If you can draw elongated cubes (in perspective) correctly, you can use those as basic forms to build details on top of.

Ah alright. Also is there a more prefered path in the basics like start with keys to drawing which i did. Then while drawing everything around me, go through perspective made easy and THEN do i suppose gestures or fun with a pencil? Or is it better to study in the fashion of

1st hour: draw from life
2nd hour: perspective study
3rd hour :gesture

something like that. i need to structure my work days if im going to get the most out of my free time this summer.

question. I have studied and memorized a lot of these kinds of constructions/abstractions. I still find that it is much easier for me to just save any thought of form until after I have some good shapes going. how fucked am I?

Depends what you want to do. Most fine artists use shape as a starting point, even people who use construction a lot like those at Watts Atelier. If you want to invent things from imagination like Kim Jung Gi then you'll need to think of form from the start though.

I know you're just understanding perspective and all, but do try to not extend your lines passed the corners.
>>
>>2528959
Not all the lines are actually going to the vanishing points properly, and some seem to be heading to other vanishing points off the page when they shouldn't.

Also you've got your vanishing points so close together that there is a lot of distortion on some of them because they are outside the cone of vision which is probably why you tried to fix it with extra vanishing points which is not correct.

I have a beginner question
What is a good texture when you are working with charcoal?

like
if you make a small square
and try to fill that with an even texture by filling in all the white with a sharp piece of charcoal.

how far do you have to push that
what is the texture people want to see?

Also

could someone share high resolution reference pictures for charcoal rendering?

>>
>>2529320

Your reflected light looks off and your values/rendering in general feel arbitrary. The direction you move your brush, and what brush you use, does make a difference. You skipped the darker shadow at the bottom and replaced it with those stupid looking pale circle things.

Use a harder brush (you can soften harder edges later, but do it once you've got your values down), paint along the forms (if you struggle to visualize forms, try drawing some basic shapes and cross-contour lines, do it enough and it'll probably 'click'). Be careful using a simple line instead of a change in value, like what you did with the sort of dip into where the stem is. In your reference it's edge is a lighter white, but you depicted it with a darker grey line. It looks weird when you attempted to paint the rest of it in values.

Shade some spheres nigga, get an idea for the way the light hits a form like that. It'll give you some practice rendering, too.
>>
>>2529320

The more close to you, darker it becomes, you should smooth the shadow transitions, just the highlights are white, change the background color to a light gray, there's no contour in real life, you clearly didn't drew what you saw, measure the apple, take your time.

I don't know, it's canson paper
I guess smooth, but not newsprint smooth.

Have you tried a lot of different papers? / do you have a go-to favorite paper?

Sometimes charcoal tutorials mention toothy paper as if that's going to get you even smoother results because the paper can hold more charcoal, what's that all about?

This is what I can do with gesture after studying it for about a few weeks. I've read on vilppu and watched proko's video on the subject
I always try to look for the longest axis of action lines and give everything a sense of direction
I know the proportions are wrong since I'm not quite there yet but am I even capturing the motions right?
>>
You seem to be getting the right idea. Just keeping doing them everyday and try to define them more. Maybe try and exaggerate/push the gestures as well then you are doing them.
>>
>>2529603
Thanks broski. I'm always scared to exaggerate so the pose doesn't look like something that is impossible for the human body to do
As for defining, I guess I should read further into figure drawing for that huh?
>>
>>2529485

A month is absolutely nothing. You've barely even had time to get your bearings, let along know exactly what you're doing and be able to improve consistently. I think it was a year before I even had a concrete idea of how everything worked, let alone actually started to get significantly better.

Drop gesture. It's useless without knowledge of construction and proportion. You can pick it up once you've been studying head and figure abstractions for a while.

You want improvement soon? Focus all of your effort on accurate drawing. Studying properly relies on you copying your subjects accurately. Get Keys to Drawing and work through it. Practice drawing simple objects and read up on measurement techniques, using angles, plumb lines, negative shape, etc. Do lots of simple still life. Fruit, vases, etc.

Once you can draw accurately start copying all the drawings from figure construction books (Vilppu, Hampton, Loomis, Bridgman). Once you've memorized the abstractions/mannequins and proportions, apply what you've learned to photo studies.

Work through Perspective Made Easy, and then Scott Robertson's shit. This stuff is really, really important.

Top it all off with Scott's How to Render book. If you do all this shit and stick with it for a year, you'll know where you need to go from there anyways.

If you have money, just sign up for Jeff Watt's online drawing course and study the fuck out of all that for a while and he'll tell you all the good shit.

Just remember, repetition builds skill. You can't do something once and say you're done with it. Repeat studies until things come easily to you, then apply the information constantly to different subjects. Don't turn off your brain and copy mindlessly, always analyze. Don't spend hours doodling and call it practice, because it isn't.
>>
>>2529623
A month is definitely something and isn't absolutely nothing. It's what you do with it that counts.
>>
>>2529628

If you're expecting big improvements on a month to month basis, you're going to be sorely disappointed and burn out quick.

Yes, you can do a hell of a lot of studying and learning in a month's time and it will add up overall, but you can't get hung up on looking for big improvements over such a small span.

This is more to do with the mentality of training. Just be comfortable with what you're doing and work hard. Every 6 months or so it's fine to look back at your old work and compare it to what you're doing now, but it's not something you should obsess over. Improvement creeps up on you over long periods of time, it doesn't jump out of the bushes at the end of the month.
>>
Redid still life from last thread. I was told to work on the flowers perspective and the values. I Darkened up the values a lot and tried to work on the pedals pointing toward me but i dont think i made any progress there.

>>
>>2529653

You've cut corners. Your drawing does not match the shapes in the image. Be patient, and take the time to measure and draw the image accurately. Don't worry about painting or value, this is more important. Just do that and get it right. Spend as many hours laying it in accurately as you need. Use your pencil to check measurements.

>>
>>2529755
What?
>>
>>2529749
You're not really observing the reference well. You've got some proportion errors and you have ignored the lighting. Think of the head as an egg shape. Notice how the light is coming from the bottom left and as the head turns away from there is gets darker. The nose too is lit from the bottom left then gets darker as it turns away.

Honestly though this image has a lot of subtle value and colour shifts in it that is hard for a beginner to pick up on. I would choose a picture with more defined light and shadow shapes and then once you are comfortable with that try returning to an image with softer and more subtle lighting like this.
>>
Beginner here. Are there any good books or resources that cover the visual behavior and visual laws of light and how light will behave in your painting? I feel like this is extremely important and will ruin the painting if it isn't understood.

If my light isn't drawn to do what light is supposed to do the color and everything the light is bouncing off of in my drawing will not be represented correctly
>>
>>2529770
Well when I was sketching the reference I was trying this "relative distance" thing I saw on youtube. Clearly didn't work as well as I wanted it to. But I agree this reference might be a tad difficult for a beginner like myself.

>>
>>2529780
Sounds like you are doing comparative measurement which is a great way to approach things, it just takes some practice before you can be accurate with it. Don't give up.

Looking at your painting you made the nose and mouth too small. Since you are painting the head the same size as the reference a quick way to see this is to flick your eyes back and forth quickly, and you'll notice the size difference. Another way is to compare vertical or horizontal relationships within the image. In the reference the outside of the eyelashes on the eye on the right lines up roughly vertically with to right corner of the mouth. Look for as many vertical and horizontal relationships between landmarks as you can.

Pretty nice. I like how on the face the brushstrokes follow the form. The hair and shirt don't have this and are much weaker as a result.

Ordinarily it would be good to vary the size of your brush more--bigger brush for broad flat areas, smaller brush for details. Oddly I think the uniform brush size works in your favour here though and adds a nice stylistic element.

You aren't drawing what you're seeing.

Hit up Hampton for hand construction, he explains it in a little more depth than Loomis.
>>
>>2529972

Focus on getting the overall proportions correct first using light, erasable lines. You can go over with more detailed lines and shapes once you're sure everything is accurately layed-in. Think of it like setting up a blueprint for the finished drawing. You need an accurate foundation first.

Try doing the exercise a few more times before you move on to something else, be patient. If you can't hold your hand steady don't feel bad about using a photo.

No, the whole point of the construction is so that you have an accurate, proportionate foundation, these are distorted. Copy the mannequins from books repeatedly and then try drawing them over photos. Find a proportion guide for reference. ie. 8 heads tall, torso 2 heads tall/wide, legs 4 heads, etc. Start with just simple standing figures, front, back, 3/4.

Really just copy the living hell out of those books. If you can't draw accurately, just focus on training your comparative measuring skills. Study still life.

Hey can anyone refer me to a tutorial for people who are both new to photoshop and digital drawing in general?
For now all I am able to do is draw lines but I would like to know of techniques used for shadowing and colors
It would give my studies more life that's for sure
>>
>>2530226
You don't need to know those techniques yet if you only draw lines. You should just really start with traditional materials since learning multiple things will be more difficult on you.
>>
>>2530228
And when would be a good time to move back to digital and learn how to render?
>>
>>2530231
After you understand perspective and construction of forms such dissections, intersections, organic forms, etc. At that point, it should be okay since you need to understand those to be able to properly look at value. Or else you would have unstable shapes and forms and understanding value with that is difficult.
>>
So as someone with brain damage, what would be a good way to keep myself going? I do enjoy doodling my shitty symbol drawings, but I've got the damned time keeping up with practicing.
>>
>>2530245
There's not really any concrete way that someone could tell you except yourself to keep yourself going. The fundamentals are slow, hard and boring. It's not really enjoyable, but you will need them if you want to become a good artist.

I can only really give you suggestions about what to do and hopefully you can figure something out. Think about what you want, a goal of some sort. Drawing shouldn't be a means to an end ever though. That's how you make it not enjoyable. You should always enjoy the process of drawing itself too or else why would you be doing it? You could just hire someone if you only wanted the end product, so learn to love the act of drawing.

If you have a certain art piece you like, you could look at it and see how the fundamentals apply to it, or have someone tell you, any way works, but you need to realize how knowing and practicing would help you. Once you understand that, it's almost automatic. You know what you need to practice to improve and you get into a cycle of feeling good and constant improvement.

Understand that pros are people with years of experience and didn't just magically become good. They worked hard and you will have to work hard too if you want to be able to do what they do.
>>
>>2530255
Thanks bud, it's just that sometimes I struggle with as much as eating or taking care of myself, courtesy of mental problems. So I was just wondering if there were any tips. I actually do enjoy scribbling extremely poorly, and to be honest I just wanted to get better at it and there aren't really any goals besides that.
But still, thanks. I think I'll just try to keep at it on better days.

The drawing of the apple is off. The stem comes out way too low and that upper portion divot should be higher up. The bottom of the apple should be rounder than it is right now, it is sort of flat. The top of the apple is too round and should be flatter.
>>2529653
The colors are MUCH better now, a lot more contrast and it is very vibrant. It really catches the eye now.

Though you didn't draw it accurately still. On the jar the slopes from the body of the jar to the neck aren't slanted enough, not only that they have a slight roundness to them. Look at the lip of the jar again in the reference image, your eye level is almost at the lip of the jar so the line will almost be straight, you can barely see the back side lip.

With the flower that is coming out of the jar it is facing the viewer too much, you can tell by the center, compare the center of it to the reference, not only that but the angle is wrong on it.

Sorry for the MS Paint, but maybe it will help you be more aware of some of the angles of the objects you draw.

>A month is definitely something and isn't absolutely nothing. It's what you do with it that counts.

So let's say you've been drawing 8 hours a day for the last month.

Someone like Vilppu or Huston has been doing that schedule (and likely more strenuous schedule) for decades to get where they are.

It's not just about what you do it's also mileage. Drawing is as much a physical skill as it is an intellectual skill.

Stop doing things fast. Practice slowly and deliberately. 60~120 second gestures shouldn't be your aim right now but training your eyes and coordination. Take what you MAY have learned from Fun With a Pencil (construction with basic shapes) and apply it to something you WANT to draw, though of course it has to be something you are copying (life or picture) rather than imagination.

I don't care if it is old masters works, something from a graphic novel, hentai, or a photo of your pet. Draw something that made you want to pick up art in the first place, there are many skills you can apply that you are currently learning and continually refine them with more practice.

It takes a long time to become competent at art, and if you are self studying as a beginner chances are it will even take longer than someone that has a teacher to often guide them and give them constant feed back on their mistakes or what they should look out for.

Community college is cheap and you can still get on your feet with some of the art classes they offer.

Look at your drawing and look at your reference and see what things are inconsistent between the two. Criticize yourself first in seeing what you did well or what you didn't accomplish.

Just look at where the tip of the nose is compared to the edge of the face between your drawing and the reference you used. That is just one aspect, but you also need to clean up your lines a bit.

So look it over and make note of where you failed proportionally and where you succeeded.

Don't be afraid to use guidelines to help with angles of objects and the relation to one another, sometimes certain objects can be found either on the same line if you draw one out or very close to one.

You can see where the lip crease ends compared to where it falls with the inner edge of the eye, where the neck comes down from the jaw in relation to the outer edge of the eye, the angle of the eyes and eyebrows, and how much the nose hangs off the face in relation to the chin and lips.

You may find other ones on your own that are helpful as well, so use what you can to make the best drawing you are capable of.

I had this problem on my old tablet, I never figured out why it happened, but there were parts on my tablet that made squiggly lines like that. If it's new you should be fine once you install your drivers, because they're not installed right now, I can see that, but if it still does that ask for a warranty replacement.

Don't use stabilizers, they won't help you at all with your tablet problem and will only slow you down.

Nose too big, jaw too large, entry of hair too exaggerated, you didn't complete the skull before going into drawing, etc.

Figure drawing is arguably the most advanced subject in art and prerequisites study of construction, proportion, basic perspective, value, and anatomy.

I want you to set up a tissue box in front of yourself and practice drawing that. Do it very slowly, measure by holding up your pencil. If you don't know how to do that look it up. Spend at least an hour on the drawing. Focus on accuracy. It's more difficult than you think it is, you can draw something more complex once you've mastered the tissue box. You can try it from different angles, light it, etc.

Get Keys to Drawing and do every exercise in that book multiple times as well.
>>
>>2531117

Punish yourself for it. Every time I've done that I force myself to redo the entire piece more slowly.

As a bonus, the piece usually turns out 10 times better the second go.
>>
>>2531125
I got to the point in keys to drawing about the masters and emulating their style. Is it ok for me to skip that part of the book?
>>
>>2531130

If it's too tough for you, you can go back to it later. I remember that part being a bit hard to understand the first time. Focus on the exercises that have you drawing objects in front of you.

Line weight, overlap

Bold lines are in front, light behind. Forms in front overlap forms behind them. Edges can go thick-thin, vice versa, they can be 'lost'. Vilppu has some pictures in his book that explain it, if you have access to that. Scott Robertson talks about it too in one of his videos.

Beginner's like to ignore feet and hands; make a conscious effort to indicate them, especially the feet, they will help you see how your figure is balanced. No need for detail though, hands and feet are very difficult to draw, just inidicating they exist is all you need to do, perhaps just draw the soles of the feet, and the mark the knuckles and tips of the fingers, whatever floats your boat.

also proko's gesture video might give you a better idea how to approach gesture

>>
>>2531193
Nothing much to criticize. Fill a page or two drawing only circles, get them as round as possible, that could help.

You're handling perspective well, maybe it's time to move on to more complex head models, like the good old Loomis model. Add more realism, maybe shading using single light source.

this is obviously a smurf/troll sent to try to check us you guys. most of us arent even beginners and are in the intermediate grind/branching out and exploring other things besides fucking anatomy because we dont quite cut it for the draw thread.

Practicing shading and drawing digitally right now only using brush, blur and eraser.

You probably want to use a smooth/feather brush instead of blurring hard lines, if that's what's happening here. If you squint, you'll realize your soft shadows are basically still hard lines, instead of doing the smooth, gradual transition you want to happen with these.

Remember, hard shadows are cast by another object (i.e. nose, chin shadow on neck), while soft shadows are produced when the surface of an object turns away from your light source.

chin is protruding too much, ear and eye are little too high. left edge of her face is more distorted in reference. try draw her neck it will look better and give you shapes to compare.

Just finish this, I will be grateful for critique.

I think the legs are too long and the feet could use work. Also I feel if you were trying to make a wall behind her it doesn't match the perspective.

The jawline doesn't go inward, make it straighter. Shorten the chin a bit, you are looking at her head from a bit more above thus her chin will naturally be shorter.

You have your eyes at an angle due to a slight head tilt but you don't have your nose at one, it is completely horizontal

Your upper lip is way off, it is high on the left side and slopes downward to the right side when it should be high on the right and slope down to the left. If you give it the same angle as the eyes it will begin to look much better.

For the eyes you are missing the thickness of the bottom eyelid on both eyes, and the left side eye is missing its tear duct.

Your hands are too small and your arms are too long, especially since there is a slight shoulder shrug it brings up the arms a bit and the hands are too low for such a position along with some bending in the arms.

Your lower legs look fairly flat. On the left side leg you are forgetting the calf muscle on the inside position of the leg. If you put it in the leg will look a lot better and of course curvier. The right side leg the bellies for both the side and inside calf muscles are at the same height and that isn't the case. The side belly of the calf muscle is higher than the inside one which of course sits a bit lower.

Hey guys.

Day One here... 23 years old, been looking for another hobby.

Never done anything outside of those mandatory art classes in school. Starting with Fun With a Pencil.

I've learned and currently play two instruments at a professional level but I had forgotten what it feels like to be so shit at something you don't even really know what's wrong. I'm looking forward to the challenge but fuck it's hard to swallow being this terrible. Am I below average for a beginner?
>>
>>2531624
lines are a bit better than the average beginner, your drawing in general is cleaner. Seems like you're putting a bit more effort into the drawing than most folks.

It's lacking a sense of depth, but that will come with practice, just keep in mind that the things you draw are 3d, they have volume.

Hey, thanks for the feedback.

I think I understand what you mean about depth - I have no concept of how what I'm drawing 'exists' (I guess?) in real space.

Is this sort of exercise (poorly imitated from one of Sycra's videos) helpful for that? Does volume come from construction?

you're the real mvp

General tip: If your lines are wobbly, speed up. If your lines are inaccurate, slow down. Generally speaking you want to be drawing just fast enough that your muscles take over and your hand doesn't wobble trying to make corrections, but beyond that, go as slow as is necessary to get accurate lines. This all takes practice, obviously.
