I have some questions pertaining to some posts in the last thread.

>>2518860
>>2518267

Beyond the fact that I'm still getting the hang of constructing the hampton way, I'm feeling very lost on gesture. These are my attempts at >>2519996, and while I feel like these have some kind of flow to them, it still feels like there's a lot I'm not getting. In the drawing for the last thread, it came out super fucking stiff, and a big part of that was that I feel like a don't really understand how to capture the gesture of a person who isn't in a dramatic pose. The model was just standing in place so I was really lost on where I was meant to be emphasizing the curves. Also, I'm lost on whether I'm supposed to be conscious of proportion or not. A lot of people have said "Use the model and the gesture to inform your drawing, not to copy the image." However, a lot of the criticism I receive pertains to specific proportional issues. Basically, it's unclear to me how the gesture is meant to inform the final piece. If I focus too much on the gesture, the final figure looks inhuman, but if I focus on the reference, the piece comes out way too stiff.

Also the gestures I'm doing look more like weightless scribbly spaghetti people than proper gesture but I figure that mostly comes down to practice.
>>
>>2520060
Knowing proportion makes gestures look 10x better. There is a reason it is highly recommended to study both at once.

If a model is too stiff, you're supposed to "push" - meaning to exaggerate the pose to make them look more dynamic and less stiff.
>>
>>2520060

i heard some where that the more you refine the stiffer it becomes. so the faster you can get it done the less stiff it will be.

Better than before but still not passable. I'd highly recommend the Drawabox exercises on circles, they helped me recognize how to draw a circle really well (not perfect but passable). Most of it is just practice.

Back to the books then I guess. Thanks.

>>2520069

Again, that becomes an issue of balance. It definitely looks less stiff when I work quicker, but the drawing becomes messier, harder to read and resembles the reference less than a more measured approach.

The chin feels a little bit off, like the way it was constructed doesn't separate it properly from the jawline (even if it's really subtle it does stick out as its own shape in the ref). The rendering is so nice it's barely noticeable, but still something you might want to consider.

That aside I am fucking impressed, bravo. No idea what you're doing in the beginner thread, honestly.

What kind of brushes did you use for the hair, especially in the fuzzy highlight areas? That's the part that impresses me the most, it captures the feel of the material so well. I'm figuring it's some sort of brush dryness/softness thing but I'm not too knowledgeable about that stuff.
>>
>>2520211
depends, are you a faggot?
>>
>>2520213
Decent attempt, but you're focusing too much on the features/ likeness. Focus on the forms. The likeness should be a secondary goal.
>>
>>2520318
>>2520396
Thanks for the crit anon. Yeah, I see what you mean with the chin, kinda lost the structure too much there while trying to make it softer.

>What kind of brushes did you use for the hair, especially in the fuzzy highlight areas?

Mainly just the default photoshop bristle brushes + smudge tool with some chalky brush and scattering turned on.
>>
I'm going through perspective sketching by ctrl paint

it tells me to draw organic shapes by breaking them down in to simple shapes. Every time I do that, my figures look really rigid.
I want them to be softer/more life-like

what do I do

>>

poorly. you seem to be outlining contours of what you see rather than really understanding the form or using any kind of construction. let's not talk about the face.
>>
>>2520441
You mean like this?
>>
>>2520431
there isn't really any consistent lighting with this. your bridge is seen clearly even though the moon is behind it, same goes for your buildings. also i believe your perspective for the bridge is very off.
>>
>>2520444
Ye, like that. Simplify the forms to basic geometric shapes and imagine them in 3d rather than just trying to match the contour.
>>
>>2520444
yes, that would make for good practice
>>
>>2520445

Around halfway from the earlobe to the line of the chin. Just look at a bunch of faces and decide for yourself - just remember that the construction of the face is not necessarily a set-in-stone formula, but more of a reference.

Anatomy to start, just keep drawing characters full body work on areas you need to improve, clothing should come later all you're doing is trying to cover up areas you aren't comfortable drawing. And hold off on more complex poses when you do get to them look for a lot of references or make yourself one

Man fuck figure drawing, still waiting for that epiphany when everything starts to makes sense. Right now it feels like a hit or miss thing, one day my figures look at least believable in space, and then the other I can't even get the gestures going.

>>2520993

Not bad for the first attempt, the point of the exercise is to use 3d forms to build these silly faces, and you seem to get that. The parts that look worse are the ones where you're are forgetting about the 3D aspect of the form and just drawing something on top of the paper, instead of the ball that you started with. It's a difficult thing to undertand at first, but it will ome naturally the more you draw..

Also some people here will tell you that this book in particular can be skipped over in favor of something a little more in depth as "drawing the head and hands" but you decide.

>>2520618

Construction feels weird, particularly on the right side (her left cheek) where it looks too big. The mouth seems kinda small for me. Still a good try, just work a lil bit more on your construction and you'll be fine

>>
>>2521271
Honestly put your tablet aside for like a good 6 months or year. It will just slow you down at this stage in your development.

Is that second image from reference? If not, then stick to copying images for now. You need to be able to accurately observe and copy 2d images. Take your time, and carefully get all the proportions and shapes right.

>>
>>2521290
You're not really drawing what you see. So for the moment you're a bit off track. Maybe try something like Drawing on The Right Side of the Brain. You need to objectively see the shapes of your reference and copy them accurately.
>>
>>2521297
I'll try to read the book. Problem is it's dry as fuck
Art books either fall into the category of too much explanation or hardly any and they always confuse the fuck out of me
>>
>>2521304
its filled with a bunch of shit

if you don't like that, you could try keys to drawing
>>
>>2521304
Well I've never actually read it. You can pick a different beginner book, presumably most will cover the same basic things on observational drawing.

All you really need to know is how to get the angles and proportions of things as accurately as possible. You can imagine a vertical or horizontal line in your head and compare things to that--which way is it leaning compared to them? How long is something? Does this part of the reference line up horizontally with another part, or is it slightly lower? How about vertically, does it line up with this other part? Can you break this weird curved shape into a couple straight lines to get the general curvature right, then correct it after?

For now don't even worry about the z-axis, just get things accurately placed in the x- and y-axes, then later you can worry about understanding form.

Don't use a grid because you will just copy tiny pieces rather than learn how to relate things as a whole.

I don't know if I can word this properly, but should I be trying to draw slowly and clearly, and build speed that way, or should I be trying to draw with speed, and build clarity?

like, should I start slow and get fast, or should I start fast and get good?
>>
>>2521358
Go slow and get it right. There's no point in going fast for the sake of speed since you'll be sacrificing quality for no real reason. You shouldn't be rushing ever, even when doing timed poses.

It's not too wide, but I feel like the side that turns away from the viewer is missing planes that would show on the outline in perspective. Like the barrel of the mouth, eye socket and cheekbone, etc.
>>
>>2521364
Try adding the ball of the nose and the nasal bones. Your sketches are missing some elements, they look like two nostrils on a tube.

Check out Michael Hampton or Kevin Chen. Basically you build the forms of the features in the same way you can construct the body. You can do this to get the features drawn with enough depth and from any angle rather than just flat symbols on a head that approximate things.

First ever study, never learnt how to draw from reference only OC. Lots of questions.
I have no idea how to render.
Where do i start?
I tried coloring the facets/planes but then started looking awful.
Should I try to improve the accuracy of the sketch instead?
I think I can paint and color 3d shapes pretty well but humans fuck me over.
Any good guides anywhere about capturing the texture such as hair and skin rendering?

I think you got the nose a little bigger than the ref, but it could be the outline. Really like what you did with the hair there. Also the shapes are nice. Only thing I could point out is that it feels rather "graphic" if you know what I mean, like you could make it more 3d if you work on your values, right now it has too much white, not enough midtones, but i'm just a begginer so...

your hair is really cool. you should try treating the value shifts in the face just as roughly as the hair except with a lighter value range of course

if you go into the values of face and hair make sure you use it as a second chance to get things positioned correctly. finding the correct placement of vague blobs of value can sometimes be easier than finding the correct placement of precise lines
