Progress.

She's more or less done. Now I just gotta work out the hands, the butterflies, and paint the martian landscape in the background. As well as perhaps outline the chains.

I wonder if it perhaps looks a bit disjointed. I didn't intend to have a background. At first I simply wanted to have her with a magic circle behind her, but then that felt a bit dull, so I decided to add the overhead landscape, and the more and more ideas kept piling on.
>>
>>2487917
The hands going for the chains are dope, I think you should add more, and remove the rest, since it feels like a little bit too much.

Yep. It's fairly crap. But keep drawing, seems you're on a somewhat good track.

Your understanding of the fundamentals are still extremely basic, dedicate some more time into studying basic forms (still lives, etc) before delving into the harder stuff. After that you can start looking at anatomy, lighting, etc.

Remember, make sure to draw for fun and love the process, but also remember that it's impossible to improve without studying the fundamentals.

Keep drawing anon!

k, i'm drawing this for my cousin, he doesn't know it yet so if you guys tell me it's total shit i can throw this away no problem.

I tried inking it on some oil paper to not fuck up the original sketch, wich was a good idea because i might toss the inked one away.

If it looks like shit is because one, i have no artistic background (i always studied mechanincs) and two, i didn't use any references, it's all "imagination" (i kept drawing lines until they looked good enough, it's my patented strategy)

if any kind soul could redline the biggest mistakes i would be eternally grateful
>>
>>2488149
It's very good. The inking loses a lot of the dynamism and form the sketch had, though.
>>
>>2488057
Sticky

Try different angles and shots as you learn the forms of the head and facial features. Right now you're symbol drawing pretty hard and not respecting your proportions either. Try some Proko tutorials on the head.

Thanks - I also switched to just doing most of the work on a single layer. I had some weird phobia before, and I'd try to "save" my work by throwing down a new layer for each color, but it started to take too long.

You should post something , i don't get what you mean. Just add as many details as you can, every strand of hair, every reflection, then simplify your design by drawing over it, using simple geometric shapes. If it takes more than a couple of minutes to simplify your design then there's too many details, simplify it even more.
>>
>>2488198
Careful with muscles or they end up looking weird. You are doing real good from what I can see. But that foot needs to be addressed badly. If you fix it in digital, try it out now first. It might look a bit off when you edit the lines and that's a headache after working hours on a piece.

On another note, this looks like dunkmaster darius with a beard. Hah
>>
>>2488300
Duly noted. Halfway trough i realized i was going down a bad road, so now i'm keeping the muscles really simple. I might post the digital version tomorrow, with the resized shoe and everything. Also holy shit is dunkmaster darius cool, i might use him as a reference, thank you
>>
>>2488344
Np, anon!
Post it up when you feel like it, I would love to see the progress!
>>
>>2488278
Not him but I'm so used to seeing "draw simple shapes, then add details, done" in literally every guide and book, my details are always fucking trash when it comes to hair and I don't get it. I even sometimes straight up copied the details of another drawing, and my own hair still came out like shit. I've given up trying to make good looking hair, now all I do is blocky air like in >>2488085
>>
>>2488170

I think you're right. I was trying to go for foreshortening.
>>
>>2488357
Practice. Then copy. Then practice. Hate yourself for a little while. Give up. Regret giving up. Practice more.

Rinse and repeat. You'll figure it out at some point.
>>
>>2488357
actually i said to do the opposite. draw detailed hair first (in pencil), they'll come out wrong but thats what you want. Then draw over that , using simple shapes to trace what you already drew and cancelling what you don't like. Then add details, then draw over that again. rinse and repeat till u happy
>>
>>2488171
I just started richard schmid's everything I know about painting, so far is promising, you might want to give it a try
>>
>>2488031
Me again, somehow having huge trouble getting posts to send.

Ok so here's my issue.

I've been drawing for 1 year and I feel I'm making good progress in terms of realism and learning all my fundamentals, generally everything is going well and progressing.

My one issue right now that's holding me back is that I can't simplify facial features particularly the nose without feeling like im lazy, a good example I can give is that when im doing a small scale face where my pen can't inflect a lot of detail I have to draw dashes for eyes and 2 dots for a nose.
I feel there's a mental drawback for me that makes me feel these things aren't "good enough" or that no "effort" has been put in and that it is valueless, then I look at batman year one or any other particularly heavy line weight comic book and I see that this shit is rife, accepted and loved.

So my question is this, in comic books and in the background of stylized peices is it fully acceptable to dart in 3 horizontal lines for an eye, and 2 dots for nostril shadows?
Do you have any examples of artists from comics, manga, stylized illustration who do this well?
I'm trying to practice it by looking at headshots of male/female celebrities and boiling them down into small fine liner drawings but it always ends up shit.
>>
>>2488067
Needs more planning. You should always try to get down basic shapes and indicate where certain body parts go before detailing things in.

The neck is massive and the shoulders are too scrunched. Arms are too skinny.

Could be a lot worse though, just gotta approach the forms in 3d if you want more realism
>>
>>2488481
Unless you are under constraints like comic artists are for certain formats then theres noo reason to be over simplified unless it stylistic looks good. Dont work small if you dont have to if it hurts the detailing process
>>
>>2488498
here's an example say the constraint is that the paper is 11x13" and the pen is a 0.05 , get what i mean more now?
or say its A4 and you're using a 0.5 , if a character needs to be recognizable then that's my problem.

I doubt the solution is to get a magnifying glass and use a 0.05 and do a full detail face there that sounds totally wrong.
>>
>>2488537
solution is do it on computer foo'

i have this weird problem with drawing characters in this style where i can draw them from the back no problem but to draw them from the front i have to visualize from the rear and sketch that before going back and clean up/switching details to make them face forward. anyone suffer from a similar problem and/or have tips?

>>2488481
>>2488498
>>2488537

the smaller/farther away something is the lower it's level of detail should be

>if a character needs to be recognizable then that's my problem.

good character design should be recognizable even if you have to reduce the face to two dash lines and a dot nose, hell, it should be recognizable even if you leave the face completely blank, look at mike mignola's work with hellboy and bprd

you use visual cues such as hair, clothing, body type etc. to create a unique silhouette which allows you to plant a visual anchor in your reader's mind

think of it like how you might look for one of your friends in a crowd of people, it's difficult to read faces clearly at a distance/from behind so you look for their haircut/outfit/bodytype combo
>>
>>2488580
On what you said about costuming visual ques and silouhetes I understand that fully, it just feels cheap somehow. Maybe I'm not fully in the comic book mindset

And speaking of arms, I'd say the one on top. I like the way she just leans into the city. Makes it seem more dynamic, like she's in mid action, while the bottom makes it look like she's just resting and supporting herself by her arms. Plus the way her shoulder juts out on the bottom one isn't very becoming imo, but I'm not a muscle fetishist so what do I know?

don't take my word for it though but if someone else see's it maybe there's an issue with the line weight causing the forms to be lost.

>>
>>2489403
Yeah, I just feel something is fundamentally wrong with the composition snd colors. I'm not quite sure what though, do I'll leave it at that.

I did want to have it be very gritty in style to kinda capture Ishiwatari's way of illustrating things, but at the same time, I didn't plan ahead for the piece, but rather just tossed it all in, and I think 90% of it's problems come from there. So I'll call it finished for now, leave it as a benchmark for my current skill, keep learning and studying, and when get better, and have a better eye for all the mistakes perhaps redo it in the future.
>>
>>2489230
this is really hard to read, the two subjects are blending into each other a lot. the hair of the character in front looks like its part of the helmet of the character in the back

i guess its because the size of the heads are the same so on first glance I recognized them as being on the same plane but after a close look one charcter is in front the other

I don't have any recommendations specifically for how to fix these issues but to me it seems to be the most glaring issue i can think of

when doing a blur like that on the HYPERbALL i'd really suggest having it obscure the hand

overall it has a lot of anatomy problems but the overall gesture and energy is actually carrying it really well, the biggest problem i'd say is the feet. the one on the ground is too flat, should be in a bit of perspective to imply the ground plane isn't directly in line with where the ball is

Well, with clothing wrinkles, what you gotta do is find 'pinch points', and then sling the lines from those around the body. Where the clothes are flat on the body, there are no wrinkles.
It's a bit difficult to explain.

>>

Well, I'm a piece of shit with lineart, but I, personally, like adding a thicker outline on the outside of the figure and around the head. I just feel it pulls the character from the background.
Oh yeah, her eyes look a little low, I think. And the forearm's muscle structure looks a little off. (They're almost balanced like calves, with more muscle on one side than the other)
Oh yeah I'd also recommend colouring lineart, but that would depend on colour scheme so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
>>
>>2491718
>also recommend colouring lineart
yeah so would I but I'm shit at rendering.
But thank you for that other critique as well. I just feel like it's so damn basic and I don't know where to proceed. Probably doesn't help that I'm using pretty much one brush thickness throughout... makes it look like it was done in bloody Paint, and not in a good way
>>
>>2491720
Hot damn- well, welcome.
Well, what program are you using, and what kind of graphics tablet?
You could also try textured brushes, but I tend to use those more out of laziness because they mask my mistakes in lineart h a

ok this drawing is based off of an inside joke among my friends, so it might seem weird/dumb

but does it look ok? I think that for the most part, it's pretty well drawn (for a cartoon). I think that it has a good sense of proportion, and the lines are drawn so it looks a little 3d, or however you would describe that. do you guys think so too?

the hands are shit but I didn't want to sink a lot of time into making them.
>>
>>2491726
It's weird as holy hell, but it looks pretty alright to me beside the kinda bland colours. (Mostly with the hair and skin) However, this is more an opinion on my behalf, as it could be entirely stylistic for you.
I think it would be alright to just throw in shadows beneath the characters, though. It just may kinda 'place' them in the place a bit more, if that makes sense.
Oh yeah, also, why is there shading under the girl's elbow but nowhere else?

>Well, what program are you using, and what kind of graphics tablet?
GIMP with a standard Bamboo stylus tablet sans pressure sensitivity - IE the bare minimum, terrible for lineart since I cant get pressure. I've tried textured brushes but I avoid them because of the reason's you've mentioned. I guess I just always figured "once I have my lineart, THEN I can do something with it" but I don't know what to do. I suppose I will work on thickness and texture, and try to launch off that into my rendering, cause it's mostly that where my big issue lies. It doesn't matter if I can make some good lineart if I cant turn it into something well rendered, and that's why I don't do colors yet either cause then they just look shitty, pic related, looks like shit, looks extra shit against high contrast single dark lines, s'pose I could blend up but that's the issue with rendering innit I dunno how to go from lineart to it, regardless of the many flaws my lineart has in the first place
>>
>>2491736
>why is there shading under the girl's elbow but nowehre else
there is also some shading under their chins!
but really, I just didn't want to take the time to shade it or mess around with the colors

i'm mostly posting it becuase I'm kind of surprised that my lineart looks as decent as it does. usually my drawings are just proportionally wonky enough that it looks bad

LONG POST AHOY!!
https://krita.org/ Okay, first off, Annon, meet Krita. It's an open-source art program which is actually said to be able to surpass Photoshop in terms of quality. It is compatible with its own documents, which I can't currently remember the name of, and Photoshop documents, even though they may get a bit distorted. I ALWAYS recommend this out.

Now, for the tablet, always make sure your drivers are updated at the Wacom site. That helps it run well. (Random tip- if pressure sensitivity stops working while you're using it, or when you boot up your computer, you don't always have to restart. Just go to 'services' and then restart the Wacom tablet one.)

Well, with rendering, I'd recommend making 'masks'. These may not work the same way in other programs (I use Photoshop), however, they can be made to work with some creativity. This connects to what I've mentioned prior; if you make sure your lineart is thick outside, then you can select everything outside the character, feather it, inverse selection, then fill that selection. This is your mask. Make sure it's on its own layer.

With shading, though, what you're doing is a bit confusing to me. I can see that you have your light source established, but it seems a lot of the colours are a bit odd and your shading a bit blobular. When it comes to shading and lighting, I avoid using layer modifers (IE multiply) for most things or something like dodge and burn. I instead actually use colour theory woo-woo, but a good rule of thumb is the darker, the nearer purple and, the lighter, the nearer yellow. Yellow approaches orange and then red as it gets darker. Things get more saturated, and then, when they're at about twenty to thirty percent lightness, they rapidly lose that saturation.

That's what I got for now. (Don't wanna go above post limit)
>>

you could say that its an artistic decision instead of a mistake sure, but some viewers like me might see it as a mistake rather than an intentional decision.

Thanks. I do some of that already, with masks and whatnot, that was just a quick render I did. As for the shading, I know this is gonna sound like an excuse but the character has burnt tips (pic related) so those aren't shadows, unless you mean other areas. I probably shouldnt have added them so lazily cause it did screw up the shading however, just one of the reasons I'm shit at rendering. I do get what you mean by blobular though. I also agree with not using dodge and burn, it's lazy and doesn't look as good as using actual color theory for dark and light. Thanks for the critique/advice. I'll check out krita and work on my line thickness!

I like how free your style feels, admittedly, although I'm finding a lot of the smaller details harder to make out. I'm mostly noticing her facial features looking a bit different between the two. (Mostly the eyes, eyebrows, and a bit of the nose)
As for design, I find it to look distinguishable and well-put together. It doesn't feel bland and open, but it also isn't clouded with too many details. I only want to note that the legs on the right have a lot of detail when compared to a lot of the upper portion of the drawing, though, which makes them draw a lot of attention downward. (This could be just the current state of sketch, though, and fix itself with further rendering)
>>
>>2491955
yeah this is concept creation scribbling. trying to make super clean lines is toxic for my creation process.

and i do want her to look slightly more 'feminine' but not overly so. its a thin line i gotta work on.

her face in detail is how i like it. just want the rest of the figure to sell that aesthetic.

wow youre right. i need to work on drawing the same face from all angles..

>>
>>2491979
Faces are a son of a bitch... if you want my advice, which is prolly a bit mediocre and/or things you may already have been doing/were gonna do, here it is;

Some people do really tedious line stuff across the page (I think you know what I mean; aligning the eyes, nose, jaw, chin, top of the head, and even cheekbones sometimes), and others just draw the various aspects from different angles.
You could maybe JUST draw her face, too?
You could also copy her face onto another layer and put it closer to what you're trying to draw so you can compare the two and the measurements.

Well, just on the note of concept designs-
I took an old design sketch, then I started dicking with it and refining it to improve a character design. (For a character I like to call 'Birdmanwhore') The jank anatomy from past-me still haunts the drawing (long torso, the shoulders are all uneven, something's up with the ankles, there's hair just... sticking out like a plank.), but the shading shouldn't be as painful.
It's a runaway sketch to be honest.

(....it is not)

>>
>>2492039
(o no)

Yee-
Contrast and all that shit that goes into design is always kinda a pain.
Basically, what you want to stand out is what will draw the most attention.
With colours, this can be;
The lightest colours in a dark palette or vice versa
A cool colour among warm or vice versa in a palette
The highest saturated part in a low saturated palette or vice versa
A place of high contrast
The place that is less blurry (as you got there)
... and well that's the shit I can remember
love me some colour palettes
Oh yeah you got any tips you found out that are kinda lesser-known??
>>
>>2491800
you obviously have a story and context in mind with those characters, but im uncertain what kind of narrative you are delivering with the drawing,as in, what are you trying to tell the viewer.

Okay, here's something interesting.

I started fooling around with the 3D models in Clip Studio Paint. I didn't like them that much, because they seemed too stiff and a hassle to pose correctly. That, and the proportions are always sort of weird.

But I just traced it quickly to get the pose down, and then refined that sketch sligthly, correcting the stiffness and the weird proportions. And it was pretty fun to do! I can see this becoming a new tool in the artistic arsenal, so I'm glad I gave it a shot. If you're in the same boat, try it.

what's your blog senpai?
>>
>>2492564
Looks like she dipped herself in oil here.
>>
There is some OK stuff in here

>>2492592
Ghost guy in the back looks peculiarly large. Nice wings

>>2492869
I like the face, though the line work isn't really my style maybe clean it up a bit

>>2493022
Neck is a little long, facial features a little compressed

>>2493232
The gradient on the bottom is a little harsh, lower the opacity or don't take it all the way to black.

>>2493261
Cute - make the fingers and toes a little more deliberate?
>>
>>2493280

I pretty much never update though

>>2493288
Good advice, thanks!
>>
>>2493293

i posted this like one minute ago, the colors and stuff are directly related to the plot and the state of mind of the main character, however im on the fence about how to make colors clash to convey tension and anxiety and yet not come off completely incoherent and too busy. if anyone has any tips about that id love to hear it

>>2493288
also thanks!

looks completely unnecessary considering the 3d model gives almost no valuable information.

I can draw a stick man and some simple shapes to indicate the rib cage and pelvis and have more information than that model.

Maybe if the 3D model is higher quality it would save some planning but drawing it out seems more reliable.
>>
>>2493363
Not him but what if the model gave more information? I agree here it's rather useless and one should use his time learning anatomy instead but otherwise I wouldn't throw the using a 3d model idea to the trash just yet.

Fuckin' appeal, how does it work?

Ignoring some of the other issues for now, are the boobs too big? I'm undecided if I want to sacrifice general appeal for rockin' tits and I wonder if I've added a few more extraneous details than necessary as well, like the back of the helmet in particular looks a bit noisy to me in hindsight.
>>
>>2493531
They're way too big and cloth doesn't stick to them like that and they're not supposed to be flying like that or be that wide without extending correspondingly into space or not being part of the ribcage or I don't even know. The "hair" looks bullshit too, identical in all views.
>>
>>2493531
It lacks appeal because your design lacks clarity. Is she supposed to be a child? A sexy midget with a big rack? A young woman with stylized proportions? It's really impossible to tell.
>>
>>2493540
>a child

This nigga

Good points all around though; I guess I'm not sure how to visually articulate all of that stuff in a one-off turnaround without proper setting, the fact she's a young woman wouldn't be as apparent without seeing how other characters looked. I suppose adding an extra head or half-a-head to her height wouldn't be a bad idea all things considered though either.
>>
>>2493363
Helps when you're trying to figure out weird poses in an unfamiliar perspective.

My picture wasn't the best example of that, haha. But as always, it's just a bit of help, it's still smarter to simply study as much anatomy as possible.
>>
>>2493296
Because I'm terrible at keeping blogs :3c
>>
Okey , let's say you have a style , i mean , an actual style , you have all the fundamentals , you know how drawing in general works .
If you copy another artist while you have already have a style , would that be a bad thing? Let's say you really like the way the artist draws hair and for a while you copy it and you combine it with your way of drawing hair style .
I heard alot of mangakas who have what is called ''influences''.

It would help if you paint grayscale for a while desu. And then use colors . The shading is not that good and the choice of colors. Watch alot of speedpaints

Do the pattern manually. Those pasted-on stars look like ass, they don't conform to the shape of the fabric at all. At least transform the shape if you don't want to draw it.
>>
>>2493535
It's supposed to be form fitting clothing, I guess I'm not sure what you mean by 'cloth doesn't stick to them like that', if you could go into more detail I'd appreciate it. I understand the gripe about the hair, but I felt like if I actually drew it how it'd look as an ovoid shape with a little nub embedded somewhere therein I feel like it'd look quite a bit worse, it was kind of a deliberate liberty I'd taken if that makes sense. M-...muh style!

looks pretty good, liking the contrast. But work on anatomy a bit more to make the body look more interesting. Also maybe try to put in some meaning in your drawings? What are these things around her? plants? 7,9/10 tho
>>
>>2493692
I like the darkness but maybe do some painting studies too just to figure out a decent style and to learn values etc

Alternative art thread so I hope this is the right place for this, but how can I get into graffiti-style art (just on paper)? I love the way it looks and I'd love to make some of my own but I suck

did this earlier this morning. its a concept for a chess rook as an armored elf.
comments/crits welcome

>>2493925
Do you mean lettering or cutsie monsters and stuff?

In either case, I'd say get a pack of brush-tip markers in black and start with just black and white and move to color later.

Be sure to grab some decent cardstock too, none of that shitty printer paper
>>
>>2493974
By elf do you mean tolkien elf or more Keebler elf sized? Because if he former, the arms look really stubby, and the hands very tiny.

That said it's kinda nice, would be nice to see bishop, pawn, knight, etc
>>
>>2493962

Ah, I see. It was so epic looking I just assumed it was more full sized with goofy proportions, but now all the pieces have fallen into place. Nice drawings m8

It's not surprise, really. At least to me it's the superior brush for digital drawing. Has a nice feel to it.

Its called calligraphy.

Lettering, handstyles and throwups kinda stuff
