I would love to but whose art are we going to use? If we use any of our own people will just call us assholes and jellyfags etc. Maybe we could use some old master work until we get new choices from the new posts. This guy's ego is bad enough without him turning every draw thread into his personal sketch dump of things he really doesn't want you to critique.

I think the portrait you chose is boring. Dead on angle, nothing happening. If you want to make a "scary" monster or something like that, at least try to make an interesting picture in terms of camera angle, lighting and pose.

The waves look very unnatural and uniform, especially in the right part. I suggest you take a look at some master seascapes. I also feel there is little in the colours to pique my interest, they lack oomph. Make use of a wider range of values and use it to lock the viewer's eye onto something.

looks good anon. reminds me of wreck-it-ralph. nice warm colors and strong individualizing features(large hands, overalls, broad figure) etc. the face isn't that great - i get that it's supposed to be simple, but it's kind of just ugly. look up some disney/pixar character concepts for a lead on how to simplify facial features (while keeping them intact).

you should try drawing him in different, more dynamic poses/gestures to capture more than just the front. right now he looks a bit robot-like.

too simple to critique farther than that, though.
>>
>>2485982
>>2485963

I personally would advise to make a sillhouette sketches first to try different designs before filling it in like that one student of Scott Robertson did in "The Skillful Huntsman".

So far I think it's too generic and simple. But I'm beginner so nvm me.
>>
>>2485945
this is sort of off in terms of drawing and construction, which gives it a nice kind of lumpy rearranged look

but here's a redline anyway

basically what i see is the mouth tilting off from the plane of the face. same with his right eye. that piece of cartilage between the nostrils looks like it's off too, but that might be an individual thing. the way you've shaded the left eye socket and eyelids doesn't give much of a sense of shape. also he has no tear duct. the eyebrow tilts down too much into the eye socket, when it should be up on the brow. the ear is a little underconstructed. maybe try overlapping a little more in the bits of cartilage of the rim to give it a solid look.

the shading in general is just really tentative and not all that descriptive. i don't get a feel of where the light source is other that "above and to the sides and front", and even then there are places that should be darker (eye sockets/lids, under the hat rim, under the top lip) and lighter (the nose) if that were the case. maybe try reading up on planes and doing direct light studies with charcoal.

hope this helps

Limit your pallet more overall. The shadow on the ground has so many different colors when it really only needs one. Same goes for his hair and clothes.
I'd saturate the colors in the foreground a bit more and make things more desaturated as they further from the foreground.

Just focused on the lines/shapes that carry the eye from place to place. You don't want to guid it around, so emphasized the diagonal shaft of light, brought some more attention to the altar by making it lighter (the candles would light up this scene more realistically anyway). Made the silhouette of the wall more rocky and steeper so you can tell the guy is walking behind it, and added some stalactites as well to make it feel like a cave.
>>
>>2487403
I actually love the differences in opacity and shapes with the waves, feels very lifelike. You might wanna add deeper values, though. Everything's starting to look muddled, especially around your horizon line. I like your palette too, the purples and soft yellows, but be careful with those greens in the water, too much and it'll look "contaminated."

Hello i did a quick and sloppy paint over for you. I really like your waves and clouds and i just went over them really rough and i'm sorry. But I'm trying to get the point across to make a more clear division between your values; don't be scared to go dark on your darks and to go light when called for (I exaggerated it in this paintover but i hope you get the idea.) As it is right now, everything just kind of blends together (especially the cute little ship and its lights) and that's a shame because otherwise i like it a lot.

You are seemingly drawing features and face structure without proper knowledge. Closer to oversimplification, but more seems that you built on the same flawed foundation of oversimplification then added glitter.
Maybe it could be chalked up to medium. What have you been learning from, brah?

Diggin' it.

You have some rudimentary knowledge on form and lighting but it's not quite developed yet. Watch out for the placement of your ears, probably want to revisit basic construction for a bit and make sure you have basic proportionality down. Like the other anon said, the form on your nose is not coming through very well without proper placement of tone to describe the nose's form.

Also might want to consider steering away from colour for a while, it's okay at the moment, but it's over-complicating your learning for now, so consider just sticking to greyscale. Also mess with your brush settings, flow/opacity/etc, your brush (in combination with the very flat colours) makes the painting feeling sort of ms-painty. Also another thing to comment on is the chicken-scratchy nature of your lines, they're not the worst, but your line quality can definitely improve, it'll come over time but you need to continue a conscious effort to improve your lines.

Overall i'd say you're doing pretty well - but try get out of your comfort zone soon - try delving into some deeper anatomy study in the near future.

Keep drawing anon!
>>
>>2487990
The line drawing's very good but the painting lacks some fundamentally important things.

I'd say that one of the most important things with environmental design (especially landscapes) are values as value tends to be the most effective method of portraying depth.

Maybe one criticism I would say is possibly emphasizing scale, the lack of a properly laid in sky and atmospheric values makes the village not feel as small as it should be in comparison to the rest of the landscape.

I can definitely see this painting pretty damn good if you lay in your values though.
>>
>>2487985
Ahh... I see, I need to stop to add details and take a look of the forms first
Actually I learn a lot from Chinese ink portraits, the ones with thin lines and faint colours, so it is kinda over simplified and it focuses on the details.

It's because people there actually draw and are challenged. You can also see drawthreads on other boards like /tg/. Here is a quick unfinished sketch that the drawfag called muju did from mine suggestion around 2011.

you're just noodling without understanding the form. Go back and break the study down into 2 tones: light and shadow. this will force you to define the form. after that go back and toy with your edge consistency and add in midtones/bounce light/ fill light, etc ro fully flesh out the value drawing. don't move on to color until you have your values down in this regard. after you do, color will be easy.

figure isn't my forte but here's my 2p: you need to step back from your piece and work on a higher level right now. you haven't got your gesture, posture, or lighting really figured out. start a new layer, get a huge brush and paint in broad strokes over your piece. get your gesture down and then refer to what i wrote here: >>2488264
>>
>>2488280
Agreed. Also, the redline shows nicely that the weighting of the pose is off. She keeps looking like she'll tip over. Might be one of the things bothering your eye.
>>
>>2488264
Thanks so much man! everything you've written is really comprehensive
>>
>>2487432
You are thinking too much in lines I think. Not all the lines you pencil out need to stay for inking. A thing that might be hard to figure out is the chin line. It easily frames the face too much and "cuts it off" from the neck.

Try working in reverse after a rough sketch; value and soft colouring to set the form first, then you see which (and how many) lines you need to keep.

Good going though. And as mentioned by the others, scan it next time so it will be easier to see what you've made.

>>
>>2488302
The neck is a bit long.

Other than that, your sketch is overcrowded with lines on different layers. Set the opacity down on what you have an make new lines over so you can hide your process for next steps.

Try making a head out of what you have, it's good enough. You are only practicing the helplines and grid for a finished drawing. That's no help if you don't know what they do to a finished sketch.

in concept art stuff like this is high supply/ low demand, unless if you're trying maybe to break into the mobile or social media markets. basically if I can google for this stuff, or find something on google that can replace your stuff, you haven't done your job. as it stands, the image i picked off google actually gives me more than your image. i have variation in the buildings and materials, a higher level of detail and it cost me nothing. if i had a rice paddy town in my game, i would rather have the google image than pay for your design.

really focus on the story of the town, design out the architecture and give me more than once house that has been stretched and rotated. ask yourself what your village eats (it doesnt have to be rice - maybe the villagers are aliens) , what its history is and what the inhabitants do for pleasure. then sketch out your ideas and build them up. then you can have something that can be considered concept.

Practice is both frustrating and fun. But as I said, construction. If you enjoy drawing from reference you could mix it up with drawing skulls. Great practice.

Just fill a small, really cheap sketchbook with your practice. Like, make a lot of mess and errors. Then look through it when you're done so you see that you've been learning. That's what I keep doing.

I haven't decided what those eyes remind me of yet, but it might be a good portion of my older sketches. Love it

It's getting somewhere. Ease up on the white, use the paper more as your halftone. Depend less on line and more on bigger shapes of value. Be a little more mindful of the construction next time, some areas are a little wonky relative to the rest, his left eye (pur right) is a good example of this.

There's nothing grimdark about that.

some of those poses are really static, especially that girl with the shield and spear. instead of constructing the body as spheres and cylinders first, make sure to draw the gesture before and have a clear pose/direction you want the character to be posing in before you draw anything.

The shoulder girdle is JUST-tier. You're good at copying photos and even imparting features with form if the photo has it, but you're lacking an overall consideration of the main masses of your subject. Anywhere the info from the photo is ambiguous, you go all to shit (like the collar). Draw from life more and you'll be a serious contender. As it stands, you'll only impress the untrained eye.

try using more slow, controlled brush strokes.
limit your use of the really saturated red, and instead have it highlighting a few areas, such as maybe it poking out from waves of darker blood. if that blood is glowing, it should be reflecting off of some of the white figures and tendrils. maybe make the tentrils/whatever glossy and use more contrast with them. also edges my dude, refine that shit.

Not a fan of the weird, wavy, glossy look of the glass. Those white and dark greens shouldn't be horizontal, they should be vertical to portray the grass more clearly.

Thank you very much.

I'll post again when it's finished.

I don't even like metal, but everything I draw looks like it came from a metal cover anyway.
