This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make stylized work in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

You guys have probably discussed this a million times but I never come to these threads. How do I go about developing a style? It seems like most people have art they like and it just sort of influences them and they develop a similar style. Other times it seems like people just have an innate vision of how they want to show things and they just do it. I've gone through everything to improve my drafting but I feel like nothing I draw really says _Me_. Thoughts on this?
>>
>>2281940

Thanks anon, I'm enjoying this video. I already have sort of a problem only a few minutes in though. He said that he just kind of committed to something he knew he wanted. I have no idea what I want from my art, I think that's why I've been having trouble making stylistic choices. When it comes to art I like I'm all over the map, I don't know how to whittle it down.
>>
>>2281947
>>2281966
Okay, I watched the whole thing and it was a great video, I honestly don't know why people are hating on this guy around here so much lately. Anyway, I realize now that I have to make a commitment, I just have to. I've always wanted my stuff to be more gritty and rough, people have always complimented my cleanliness (at least when I drew traditional). I'm going to make an influence map right now of people whose art I want to aim towards and from now on, I will consciously draw with that look and goal in mind. Thanks anon, that was unexpectedly and incredibly helpful haha.

Stay buttblasted, Smurf. You brought this upon yourself.
>>
>>2282116
You're pretty off bro. His head should be tilting toward his right shoulder like it is in the photo, and that's throwing a bunch of stuff off. There's also a bunch of small things that are spoiling the likeness: the subject's chin is more pronounced, his cheeks aren't as chubby as you've depicted, his smile is showing more teeth, his hair is big but not that big, etc. It would probably be easier to just start over rather than fix all that. That and move over to the draw thread, it doesn't look like you're trying to stylize much.

I'm so tired of seeing all this shitposting in my beloved stylization thread, so even though I don't know shit I will offer critique to the few artists who were brave enough to post here. It's sickening to see all this artwork being ignored while this guy who draws traced boobs gets all this vitriol

>>2282116
This is pretty cool if you were going for a different angle originally, but based on your post I think you were going for that exact image, in which case you should make the original image one of the layers, lower the opacity and set it over your drawing to check mistakes.

>>2282202
I can't really tell what the shape of the het is supposed to be, I'd say define the cap and the mouth a little more, otherwise cool stuff. Maybe next time have him doing some kind of action?

>>2282222
I'm worried about this person's feet, are they supposed to look like nubs? If not your foreshortening needs some work. Otherwise nice linework

>>2282227
I don't know much about landscape but to me the clouds need to be defined, more they are really clashing with the transparent guy, I'd say either make the guy more transparent or make the clouds inside him darker, I'd personally go with the latter

Hi guys, I could really use your help.
I'm trying to figure out a style for myself and I would like to incorporate my pencils marks into it, but I'm afraid that no matter what I do it will look amateur-ish.
Do you have any suggestions for ways I could make this look better? Is combining sketch lines and color a bad idea? I was thinking of using a brush similar to a pencil to color but I don't know what to use.

>>
>>2282273
Originals are all by the same artist. What a coincidence, I know! Maybe they're soul mates.
>>
>>2282281
So you're sketching the image on pencil and paper, scanning it, and then adding color/editing through an application? To me that will always look wonky because you're doing a lot of contrast to make the linework look darker. Look at the lines on the image you posted. They're very thin, and more importantly they're not solid black. I think if you're going to continue editing and adding color the way you are you should change the color of the pencil work to reflect things like skin/clothing, hair. That way it will look more natural. If I were you though I would just start doing the lines in the application as well. They will look a lot cleaner and nicer.

Thanks but I didn't copy anything, at least not as far as reference or something like that. And as for the stylization I said I'm trying to develop something new but similar, and to that end I'm studying the similarities between 6-7 artists who have a look similar to what I'm going for, I'm not out for aping. I don't know how to explain it any more clearly than that.

but by copying you can pick up stuff too, just not the most important stuff that is the fundamentals.
i'Ve said this before but smurf probably improved thanks to this copying. telling him to stop is just your bitterness and pettiness.
he's still got a lot to learn and that's all there is to it.

I used to copy off other Artists and was put in the same treatment as this Anon and I can say with certainty that I've improved from referencing off real figures instead.

Figure drawing involves constant problem solving through trials and errors especially when you deviate away from life through stylization but the more you understand from life the better you'll be able to "break the rules" and display a believable yet simplified figure.

Instead of just copying the answers I have slowly learned how to get to the answer which is what matters most; anybody can copy an answer but you wouldn't know the how or the why or even if it is the right answer to begin with so you put yourself in a situation where you rely exclusively on copying and on top of that you may hurt yourself as you may be picking up bad habits or incorrect information from the Artist you copy from hence why /ic/ is hell bent on telling this Anon to stop copying and actually reference from life.

yeah but you don't seem to understand the logic here.
he's not shit BECAUSE he copies, his drawings are just better WHEN he has reference. and that's not that unusual a thing.
now if he worked on his fundies, the gap would get smaller.

what i'm saying is that while fundamentals are more important, you can learn a ton from copying and observing as well. it's not that you can only do one of the two.

dunno, i'm just amazed how you can still care after the last few threads. let it go already. give him normal critique and stop derailing the thread.

Smurf gets flak because he ignores feedback and refuses to actually do studies. There is no reason to feel sorry for him. He continues to post his work and ignore the critique given to him. He pretends he doesn't but his work never showcases that he listens. Giving him any kind of lip service is a waste of time. He's lazy and doesn't want to actually improve.

Smurf here. For something like >>2281915 I take my time and do it on the span of a few days. While on the other hand >>2282825 was done much more quickly and in one row, besides the fact I have more experience with drawing females. So I don't think there is anything surprising about the quality difference. I'm not a pro nor I can quickly draw perfect stuffs like experienced artists, so I try to make up by taking y time on it.

So obviously yes, I still have plenty to learn or study, I'm not even in my twenties yet, give me a break.

And I didn't copy a Houtengeki pic to do it, just like my last recent drawings, it's getting a bit annoying to hear that everytime.

No they don't. Stagnation is just obvious. /ic/ isn't a blog. People don't post everything they draw. Improvement and stagnation are noticeable.
>>
>>2282924
Your approach is flawed if it took you days to do OP-- it should not take you that long with reference. The disparity between the art just shows that you're not really understanding what you're drawing.

No one's going to give you a break, if you post here, you subject yourself to critique. Your attitude is a bit concerning since you gave a very typical age argument-- this ultimately means nothing. It's not about how much you practice, it's about how effectively you practice. There's no reason get defensive, take away something from everything; there's a reason why people decided to shitpost you.

Please don't take this the wrong way, I really want you to improve, but you're showing a lot of signs indicative of a stubborn artist who's going to continue to do his own thing and continue to be a subpar.

Okay well, in the end I never did get any feedback on my attempt at developing this style, so I'm just gonna try one more time. I'm going for something inspired by Yoji Shinkawa and other artists like him such as Jason Shawn Alexander, Otomo, etc., and I like the heavy shadow area type ones, I've always wanted something like that because I love Caravaggio, but I also like the airy feel of the open line ones. Thoughts?

looks very comicbooky because of the thin lines.
have you tried thicker or more varied pens?

as for style, you need to study faces more if you want a more semi realistic style. i can tell that your understanding for the headshape, eyesockets and such structures are still kinda vague.
>>
>>2282474
Thoughts??? I asked about this on so many threads and no one helped..
>>
>>2283090
Well I want it to look comic book-y, that's pretty much what I'd be using it for. I said more about what I think I want to do with this here >>2282644. As for varied pens, this is all digital so I just have the one tablet but I'm testing out line weights and balances as much as possible, I'll try some with even thicker lines later. When it comes to drawing heads and faces, I think I have a good understanding, but I don't know how I want to translate them into a style yet so maybe it looks strange because of that. Is there anything in particular around the eyes and whatever else that stands out to you?
>>
>>2283097
There's not enough here to critique to any fine degree to be honest. From this alone, the only thing anyone can really say is that you need to work on fundamentals.
>>
>>2283097
It's very much a beginner drawing, there is so much stuff that needs to be addressed it's hard to approach for a critique. If I were you I would scrap it and start over, go study faces, hands, bodies. Practice your linework, then draw it again. There isn't one little thin that will make this drawing good, it is everything
>>
>>2283076
The face may be simplified, but I wouldn't call it half-assed.

it's mainly this one that bothered me. your nostrils were a too wide and the far eye didn't follow any eye-socket structure imo. your ears are a bit high even in the other pieces. the mouth is also very stylized in a simple way, which considering the artists you listed probably isn't your goal either.

your understanding might be good, but it's not enough for those artists you listed i think.
to put it in simple terms: shinkawas understanding of manly man faces is still deeper than yours.
(don't mind my redline too much, i'm not very good with drawing men lately.)

>>
>>2284828
Don't focus on rendering and color for now. Go back to complete basics and learn how to structure things in perspective, and study placement of features on a skull.
>>
>>2284831
I think that's a bit overmuch. Anatomy's not perfect, but it's not "your eye is on the side of your head" bad either. The biggest problem I can see is the the ear is too far back/ If you're going to render, smoothen out your brushstrokes, and research stroke placement. the directions of the strokes you used often compete for attention.
>>
>>2284848
>it's not "your eye is on the side of your head" bad either
Yes it is, the eye literally is misplaced, except that instead of being on the side of the head it actually makes her look more like a cyclops. I'm not just trying to be a jerk, I really think he needs to get down placing structures before he messes around with rendering. The rendering doesn't add much when the structure is this wrong, all it does is draw more attention to how wrong everything is. Foundation is important, holding off on rendering isn't that big a deal.
>>
>>2284851
I think you're seeing it wrong because half her head is blacked out.

Alright now that I look at the thumbnail the eye could stand to be moved to the right some, but part of the "problem" is that you're not getting the full picture because of the goo.
>>
>>2284851
>>2284853
So like, should I move the eye closer to the nose or farther from it?
>>
>>2284861
Farther away. It's almost on top of her nasal passage. And move the ear more the the middle of the side of her head. It's pretty much hanging off the back now.
>>
>>2284853
>>2284861
It doesn't matter if half of the face is obscured, the part that's showing still has rules to follow to make it look right. In fact it's even more important that the visible information looks right, to give the illusion of a full form. Moving the ear and eye aren't going to be enough to fix this picture, and imo any amount of editing it would just be an exercise in futility until he has a better understanding of how to structure a head. Even if it's not going for realism, right now it just isn't structured properly, and there's no reason to tell him not to study up on drawing skulls and placing features. He may even need to go simpler and just get drawing cubes cones and cylinders down first. There's nothing wrong with that, having that understanding will only make his future work that much stronger.

I understand what you mean about learning from your mistakes but I don't think this is such a case. You'd learn more from studying correct sources than counting your mistakes here. That's my opinion of what would most benefit you, for you to take or leave as you see fit.

Lol no, but I suppose it might qualify as an edgy kid portrait of him. But originally it was supposed to be some weird experiment lab kid loosing control of himself, giving his friends warning to get themselves out of there.
>lol also everyone thinks it's a girl, though I'd pin it as a he, but preferably it.

I don't know, I'm just so used to draw pretty girls, so when I draw something non pretty I lean more to them being boys or non genderish
>>
>>2284894
It mostly brought him to mind because your picture has the same sort of inbred recessed chin/underbite going.

Shit never looks good, yo.
>>
>>2284892
You're asking for perfection without instruction. That just doesn't happen. lol do more isn't going to do anything because they don't know where to go.

lol okay, but thank you for the feedback though, I can't count the times I've suffered in the silence of /ic/, but when also, I didn't draw it or anything, I didn't use a ref, I just painted a form and continued. I've started to loathe sketches, I'm sick of it, sick of constructing those lines, so it makes sense that it's more like a well(debateable) rendered turd, I've never been able to color characters using cell shading, so now I've recently just started to paint, it's a far jump from sketch, pain under it, done.

I'd say that I wasn't focusing on anatomy but rendering, but that wouldn't be true, I was just painting this feeling of the atmosphere of the scene I wanted on paper.

Here however I focused on rendering alot above anatomy, but ofc the only thing I got back was
>ayy lmao x100
>>
>>2284901
Wew lad. Realism is your friend as a starting point.I'm the guy giving you actual specific tips, but in relation to this, I've gotta say do some traceovers of anatomical skull models and work from there.

I was actually trying to make it look like a black(white) kid, hence the big lips and the uh, bulge-ish thing?

not that anon but it just looks retarded. it has a droopy eye and a generally droopy face,
your "pretty girls" probably aren't pretty either. you don't understand the structure of a face at all.
go to the beginner thread and start keeping a sketchbook.

I did tell him specifically what to study, I just said it won't be beneficial to muddle over this particular image. I'm not going to try to explain all of the concepts in what I told him to study, it's for him to read up on that or find someone to instruct him further. I won't be told it can't be done independently because I did it myself.
>>2284901
Well anon, if you don't want to do construction, you my have trouble ever coming to understand representing 3D shapes on a 2D plane. There are ways you can learn it by doing shadow shape block ins or other block ins instead but mostly you will always need to start with a rough idea and refine it. However, the finished product will always read as strange to people if you don't learn what shapes and proportions people see as normal and build from there. So good luck to you, whatever direction you decide to go.

I can do pretty/realist girls when I want, but this is the stylization thread when you have to warp the usual porportions. I already have a sketchbook since I am taking art classes
>>
>>2282897
Can you post your process for rendering?
>>
>>2284911
Rendering anime characters realistically never works because their bone structure is far too stylized to look good with soft rendering and occlusion. A good way to figure this out, though, would be to put a skull underneath her head at roughly the same scale and see how it all fits together.

Woops sorry I meant to put this in that >>2284931
post. Anyway, I can barely tell what you want to do with this. Your use of brushes seems decent enough, but you really need to clean this up before i can give any real critique.
>>
>>2284927
Sorry, but you really can't draw pretty girls.
>>
>>2284932
hmm true but I'm afraid if I try to clean it up.It'll lose all it's energy. That's a problem I've always had where my loose underdrawing has a lot of energy which is lost if I try to tighten it

What youre trying to say is completely incomprehensible AS WELL AS UNIMPORTANT, Like holy fuck. I'll re-redline if OP is still paying attention.
