Went with OP image to avoid FiRez shitfaggotry and because redlining should be encouraged and the base art was also wasn't too bad. People are probably still going to argue over it but I'm hoping it might dissuade at least a little shitposting.

If you're drawing one of these guys their hair bunches together in clumps, so the values shouldn't look as smooth as what you have. Otherwise most cows have really short hair and all you really need to do to define it is some subtle highlights where it mattes. Find a good reference and go from there.

>>2277058
Thanks but I'm talking about the light and the look of the fur.
I fear that it looks like something someone made in flash

Oh, well, yah, the lighting does look pretty bad. Even with a really intense light source it shouldn't look as washed out as that. As to the fur, it looks really flat, there's no definition. If it's that length across the entire body it shouldn't look as smooth as it does, even if it isn't wavy like the Highland Cow's.

Really sweet stuff. The colours work very well on the one on the right, certainly it is nicer than the yellow tone of the others.

Left: design on this one is the weakest in my opinion. The view doesn't really show what is going on. Is it a turtle shell? Is it a flat oval? What is over his head? A hat? Is it attached to the thing on his back? Why would he have such a massive thing on him if he's disabled? Why does he need a torch if he's blind? How is the shell thing attached to him? Too many questions, not enough answers in the drawing. His pose too is pretty boring, I imagine he would be more hunched over with the weight of that thing. Perhaps his peg leg could have a more interesting design to support the entire thing more?

Middle: Fun design. Bit bland though. Could use some more emphasis on the whole death shaman thing. Maybe more shrunken heads, or a satchel with herbs, or have better tattoo designs that represent death and cover the body or arm more. Would be good to emphasize the fact that he's wearing a skull on his face. Leaving it white like the leg would work I think. Also he feels off balance a bit.

Right: Looks good, but the design can be pushed a bit more. I feel like I've seen some similar designs before--how can you make yours stand out?
>>
>>2277184
Actually I've seen you do exactly that, claimed you didn't see it because there was no title, but keep pretending faggot.

Thanks for your input.

I changed the old guy to look more like a potion/loot seller and give him a pet owl cause of good vision. I changed his staff to something more interesting, you're right about the torch, it didn't make any sense.
The thing on top of him was supposed to look like some kind of screen, i put in the shadow this time so it's more notable.

I put some eye tatoos on the middle guy cause I couldn't think of anything good and a canteen with like idk, sacred water or something. Btw the skull color comes later, the yellow tone is just a selection I make to clip the layers on top later and not worry about painting out of my lines

As for the right guy I couldn't really think of anything to improve on his design but I gave him a skull spear.

Colors are off cause sketchbook pro cant handle clipping masks

Nah, Like I said, asked. This took like 16 hours. I wish I got paid for it.

>>2277432
Those 16 hours would have been better spent studying how to draw.

I would suggest not doing stuff like for your friends at this stage, because if you continue to draw and improve chances are you'll be frightfully embarrassed by this in the future.
>>
>>2277427
Right? Makes me stop believeing
>>
>>2277435
I'm sure I'll be more embarrassed by the fact I agreed to do this in about 2 years. I had fun, though, and personally, I care about that most. Getting good is great and all, but I'm not gonna rush it.
>>
>>2277438
You'd be surprised how quick you can improve.
You've already shown you can draw clean lines, if you skim over some of the information in the sticky you'll probably improve your eyes a great deal, and that's huge.

And easy one is light. What you've done in your picture is called pillow shading, which means you haven't drawn the light as coming from a specific direction, but sort of shaded around the outside of your shapes. You've already shown that you know that shading is used by an artist to describe a 3D form, thats not a bad place to start from.
The main problem with your shading is that the light is coming from unrealistic sources. And you can fix that really easily if you think about the problem.

After that you should put some real hours into studying anatomy, even if you only want to draw anime or cartoon characters, an understanding of anatomy is key.

Obviously his work can't really be given an extensive critique, he can only be told that he needs to learn more fundamentals and practice more. But if you feel it's wasted effort to tell someone go crack open a copy of Fun With a Pencil, I guess I don't understand the logic in thinking posting to make fun of someone is more worth the effort. There isn't a single person on the face of the planet who didn't absolutely suck at drawing the first time they tried it. Making fun of someone who's at least acknowledged they suck and is actively seeking help just seems so lame to me. But I can tell by your attitude thus far this isn't going to sway you. I just get so disappointed.

I love the style and the value / shading.

The perspective seems strange to me. The camera is at bench level, but all of the slices are cut at an oblique angle, and it seems the top of her body is more downward than the bottom.

Also the neck muscles should probably tilt?

I love the way the wasps perch on things.

I still don't understand anything about the exchange that went on here. Supposedly someone who used to post here tried posting again and was scared off by a pretty mild critique and berating, but I'm fairly certain the first post was just made by some troll who swiped a pic from someone's gallery he was hoping would get made fun of. You said you liked the color on it, but that was the worst aspect of it for me, he shaded with pure black and white and it looked so dead, plus there were weird random textures overlaid on everything with seemingly no rhyme or reason, and then you decided to draw another version of it for even less reason as nobody called you out for your art. I just

>>
>>2277401
I love this, i think you did a really good job on the values, and the overall picture is drawn really well. The only thing I would say is that the colors feel a bit washed out, i think you could use some different colors to shade the green instead of just gray tones. As personal taste I almost never use 100% black, you could use a really dark blackish blue if you really wanted, depends on how you want the whole piece to feel.

Looks bad.
Everything looks flat because of poor lighting.
Heavy outlines aren't helping either.
Clouds look like some shitty effect made in photoshop, rather than 3 dimensional volumes.
Blurry edges and random spots of white make your picture look like you applied too much water and your paper is wrinkled now.

If you want a shinier look like what I've painted think of it as a series of mirrors which all reflect their surroundings and don't be afraid to use hard edges and higher contrast, especially for the specular reflections. Having a background also helps because it gives you a source for your reflections.

Honestly I just can't draw. The only practice I've done for the past month has been still life paintings and I've never done a proper run through loomis.

Faces have always given me the shits so I'll start practicing them more I guess.

those are really good, I can actually see why the metal looks a lot higher level than the face now if you just did those. And yeh you definitely need to start studying some faces like you did with those still lifes, you don't need loomis, just study faces and their 3d structure

>not just trying to get a 1:1 likeness

I didn't even get a 1:1 likeness for any of them. And I do take notes/questions for a few, mental ones for all. Stuff like

>why are none of my colors going beyond 50% saturation
>why is everything so much closer on the color wheel than expected
>how can I show x as simply as possible
>what shapes do I need to make to show these objects with as few colors as possible
>what happens to x as I view it through this color glass
>why does the saturation increase here

etc goes through my mind.

It's not a question of which takes more effort, but is the effort worth it?
There are people who want to get better, and people who just want praise, who think they are good despite being atrocious. Have you guys seen OP's reply to the one guy who recommend he doesn't take the job and spend the time studying because he would be embarrassed to have that work displayed in the future?

"I'm sure I'll be more embarrassed by the fact I agreed to do this in about 2 years. I had fun, though, and personally, I care about that most. Getting good is great and all, but I'm not gonna rush it."

Drawing to him is just a hobby, he doesn't think he sucks at drawing (just at graphic design, but his drawings are great), and there is nothing I could say to convince him otherwise.
He doesn't take his work seriously and neither should I. He is a kid who draws furries like the other kids who draw furries on deviantart, so if I had to chose between making a huge critique on how he can improve or remaking merc_wip from scratch just to post as a response to make some people laugh, I would gladly chose to remake merc_wip, because I feel the time would be more appreciated.

As for heads and faces...learn how to draw them right away. Primarily work on learning the planes of the face.

Do a still life of an Asaro Head.

Once you understand how light falls on a head, then simply block in the light and dark values. It's all you need, really.

Don't worry about rendering in the beginning.
Check out Mignola or any artist tht uses ink on the daily. It's all about shape design.

You should learn.the thumbnail process. Do 20-30 thumbnails for a composition idea show it to people get their opinions. Also studies when rightly done will help your visual library.

The other thing too is that from what you said you probably lack confidence in painting. Think about it this way, of you don't how to paint something you don't know, so no reason to beat youself up over it. Just practice it and learn it.

One of the things I've had.trouble.with before is getting out of the "ugly" phase. Once you learn how to get past that, the real learning starts.

>>
>>2279304

That is exactly what still lifes/master studies/photo studies are good for. But a quick tip is that the shape of the highlight gives a lot of indication of the material. Skin tends to have very textured highlights where as smooth plastic has round hard highlights. That's why skin can look plastic if you paint all highlights with a hard round brush.
>>
>>2279303

It's nice to see you back and posting (jeez, how long has it been now??) but I would take a moment before rendering these and just think a bit on what you want your portfolio to be and what jobs you will get with it and so on. What are you trying to show? Right now not a single one of those characters does anything INTERESTING. Like sure they are well drawn, but the designs are the most cliched boring things ever from the generic characters themselves to even the shape language. Maybe at the end of the day that's what you want, but maybe not. I would take some time and try to think a bit on it first. Is there some way you can change the designs to bring in more of yourself and have them stand out somehow from every other generic fantasy characters (other than just the way you render or whatever)? Is it even worth rendering to "great detail"? What are you trying to gain from it or show? Can you give them more of a backstory or something that would change their designs somehow that reflects a real person rather than "female elf archer" or "hooded assassin"?

Obviously this is a matter of opinion and I can't speak for you in terms of what you want to create or show, but I can't help but feel that you are "wasting" your skills on these uninspired characters when you can bring YOU to the table more.

I'm another guy, Eitherway, the designs look well thought out in my opinion, but they are traditional, in the context of games and illustration atleast. The silhouette displays the character attributes well and so does the costumes without being to generic. Wheteher one likes it or not is a matter of preference in style and motif basically. I think, because this is only a flat color lay in, that the character and their design will look even more awesome with some good rederning of form and light on top of it.

I see your point and I agree for the most part, the point is to get my concept art section of my portfolio up to date, as ive been unemployed for a long time now and I desperately need a job at a game studio, been searching far and wide with no results. I will not overrender these ofc as it would take literally forever. The designs might change during the render process and i agree that I took the short road with most of them. I dont want any too crazy designs and like to keep it somewhat traditional and conventional looking, but ill see what I can do to make them more interesting. Ill also be adding simple small backgrounds for each at the end, havent decided on anything solid yet

It's perfectly fine concept art for portfolio purposes. Clients want to see artists tackle generic subjects to see what the artist can do to turn something generic into something unique. They want to see their visual language in a controlled and familiar environment.
This makes it easier to compare artists to each other and see their differences in execution.

And let's face it, most games that are being developed today have a generic high fantasy theme so it's a good idea to have some of that in your portfolio either way.

Have you not been freelancing? I would have thought you're good enough for that kind of work.

Might want to shake up the color schemes a bit, there's a shit ton of blue and gold in there.

Yeah I can see your points, and at the end of the day it is a matter of taste. But does he really need 8 fairly generic characters? If he wants to show his ability to take on the generic archetypes then he should need only 2 or 3 at most, then the rest would be better to do something a bit fresher in my opinion. The industry wants "traditional design" but still want to stand out as something special. Why would they pick you over fantasyartist#458? Also good design shouldn't need much rendering at all to look good.

I know that feeling of needing work haha! If you want to attract clients for character design stuff though perhaps a different approach would be more ideal? For a studio position they probably don't need you sitting and rendering out a ton of things. I think it would be more effective to show multiple iterations of the same designs. Rather than show 8 different rendered characters, show 4 characters, but for each you can show 5 thumbnails, 3 variations the best thumbnails at a more thought out level, then 3 colour variations on the best one of those, then maybe a slightly more rendered one of the best of those. This ability to start broad and narrow down a design while exploring all the possibilities is pretty key. It also might be good to have the characters designed with their importance considered more. Is one a main character? Make the design really kickass and iconic. Is one the sidekick? Make them cool but not competing with the main guy. Is one of them the villain? Make them also iconic and cool, but they need to be very different visually from the hero. Are some of the characters supporting or background characters? Maybe you need to make some sacrifices in their design so they are slightly more plain or boring and won't intrude on the coolness of the main dude and villain. Trevor Claxton I believe has talked about this type of stuff in the past, though I haven't read it for a couple years probably now.

Hmmm, if you're going to take it further I would suggest some different palette in some of them.

I thought you were working already with art, doing 3D and such.

>looks like a regular digital painting
>what are you implying

What are YOU implying? When did I say it wasn't a "regular digital painting?". Airbrushing digitally is even more accommodating than by analog/mechanical means. You don't have to worry about condensation ruining a piece you've been slaving over for 50 hours, you don't have to duck and cover every time the compressor refills, it's great! No need to get so defensive there tiger, when did a little bit of banter hurt anyone?

Not to speak for him, but I know he has dealt with some personal demons that have affected his output and its likely that this has had an impact on his career as well.

35min, Artrage. Ross-style.

I plan to redraw the same piece over and over again in increasingly shorter timelimits, to explore the gradual degradation of my work.

i want to find the point where a good painting becomes a bad one - but first i gotta learn how to make a good painting, lel.

Hmmm... Interesting. I gave up on drawing and going pro a lot of times already. Just now that I'm really focused, but I always end up demotivated because of some relationship problem. This time I think I can do it as I'm dealing better with those issues, but it's interesting to hear from others struggles and how they deal with it. :)

Regular therapy seems to help me a bit. Other people turn to alcohol/drugs/medication which can work (short term at least).
