Welcome to /fglt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

Hello. I need to know a way to change Deluge text interface. "Upload Speed" and "Download Speed" require too much space to be shown, much more than the speed on the other cells below. I can't just contract the column, because I speak a latin language, and then I would see only "Speed..." and "Speed...", as this word come first in both columns.

How can I do this?

Has anyone here managed to get the subwoofer on their Lenovo Y50 working under Ubuntu(or any distro for that matter)?

I've found a stackexchange page on the issue, but the posts seem to suggest the sggested solution was a dead end. I'm thinking of going Ubuntu Gnome over upgrading to Win 10 but it really would suck if the subwoofer doesn't work because I watch a lot of stuff and listen to music on this machine.

Even under Windows it appears the speakers function at reduced power output at lower volumes unless I "turn on" this utility which seems to have been packaged with the audio driver. This effect is less pronounced at max volume, which leads me to think it might just be some kind of software dynamic range compression processing. It really makes a pronounced "oomph" to the loudness and general audio quality of the speakers.

So much so that I don't understand why this isn't an always on thing.(I need to manually enable it every reboot/cold boot)

Nope, I own zero audio equipment since I'm not settled. I live in a rented apartment abroad and will probably be moving overseas in just under a years again. I can't be bothered to take my time and buy expensive/heavy gear which I will have to sell off before I move.

Mostly make do with headphones but sometimes I let the speakers on their notebook do the job since they are pretty decent for onboard audio and good enough for watching a show or movie.

I'm going to change my torrent client, from uTorrent to Deluge. How can I make uTorrent generate the .torrent files from the files loaded in the program, so I can "import" them on Deluge?
>>
>>54498321

mo files are compiled po files. Download the one for your language from the Deluge repository (I assume they have one), edit it and compile it with msgfmt

msgfmt your_file.po -o your_language.mo

I installed Ubuntu in a VirtualBox yesterday and today I was trying few DEs, I had Unity as default, then tried GNOME and XFCE, when I gave the command to install KDE Plasma, during the installation it showed 1 error message but kept on going, when it was done, I tried to Log Out to switch the DE but pic related started showing, and here is the thing: I forgot the username (XDDDD)

So is there a way to pass through that login screen with some sort of command?

In the second screen, if I try the first option, it goes to the third screen, if I try the second, if offers 'Use default configuration' and 'Use your backed up configuration' but when I press Ok in both options, nothing happens. If I choose the 3rd option, I can see 'xserver logfile', 'review start up errors' and 'edit configuration file'.

I could just erase this virtual machine but as I am trying to learn GNU I want to try and solve this problem. I guess its the graphic card.

Is there some recommended tool for backing up dotfiles? Currently I'm simply copying my home directory regularly to an external ext-formatted drive (it's only a few GB because I symlinked every XDG user folder to a HDD).

However I would have assumed that there was something neater for tar.gz*-ing the most important dotfiles, and by that I mean not just creating a dotfiles folder and symlinking it across the system. When I say dotfiles I mean my entire Firefox profile for example, which is a bit cloudstorage-unfriendly.

Hi, I'm using Arch Linux mostly full time but still chained to Windows for gaming. I'm tired of dual-booting so I'd like to try setting up a Windows VM with GPU passthrough since it seems like all the cool kids are doing that these days. My question is how do you maintain your VM after installation? I know you can section off your hard drive for the VM, but should I install games there as well? Or could I install them on an NTFS partition elsewhere on the drive? I feel uncomfortable keeping installs and save files "inside" the VM since I'm worried it if it breaks or gets deleted somehow I'll lose all my Windows data.

Dual booting is the most retarded thing. The only excuse for dual booting is if you do something really specific, which can be separated cleanly. That way you can start your computer, do that specific task and then switch to your full time operating system. If you have to go back and switch operating systems later on, then you're doing it wrong.
>>
>>54507098

Most of the people are rich and have a desktop and laptop computer. Despite that, they still choose to have TWO operating systems installed on one computer and switch between them for the most menial tasks.
If things go wrong, you can just keep a Windows installation DVD/USB flash drive around to go back for good. If you want to just "play around" (whatever that means) with Linux, do it in a virtual machine. It saves more time.

Try
rename -n 's/.*_//' *
If the result looks okay, remove the -n for actual renaming.

says -n switch dosent exist.
Running script without -n switch dosent do anything

That's strange, usually rename should be linked to prename on most systems. Try the same command with "prename" instead of "rename".

prename dosent exist as a binary or command

Okay, then either you install the perl rename package (the better rename) or you just try rename without the -n flag and see what happens. Maybe create some dummy files for testing.

What distro are you running, by the way?
I'm wondering.

You could also just use sed:
for i in *; do mv "$i" $(sed 's/.*_//' <<< "$i"); done

Use echo to check before actual renaming like this:
for i in *; do echo "$i" $(sed 's/.*_//' <<< "$i"); done

>s/\.jpe?g$/.jpg/
... You know that question mark is entirely unnecessary right?
