Welcome to /fglt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

Hello. I need to know a way to change Deluge text interface. "Upload Speed" and "Download Speed" require too much space to be shown, much more than the speed on the other cells below. I can't just contract the column, because I speak a latin language, and then I would see only "Speed..." and "Speed...", as this word come first in both columns.

How can I do this?

Loving i3, it has made me more productive, but two things have been bothering:

- multimedia keys don't work, even after following the instruction from here https://faq.i3wm.org/question/3747/enabling-multimedia-keys.1.html
there is a key to toggle on/off Wifi and it works, but brightness, volume, play/pause keys don't

- can't access my keepass2 database because apparently the keyboard inputs get distorted so I can't enter the correct password. made a dummy database with the master password '0' and it works.

on xfce I get none of these issues

Multimedia keys never worked for me, so I just made a few keybinds. They work in gentoo at least.

bindsym $mod+equal exec --no-startup-id amixer -q -D pulse set Master 5%+ unmute
bindsym $mod+minus exec--no-startup-id amixer -q -D pulse set Master 5%- unmute
bindsym $mod+0 exec --no-startup-id amixer -q -D pulse set Master toggle

This just uses your mod key (mine is alt) +(0 || - || =) to set volume and mute.

There's probably a switch to make "make install" write files it creates to a file. Then just remove them manually.
See, that's why you should always create your own packages instead of using "make install". It's cleaner and easier to uninstall.

http://www.gnu.org/distros/free-distros.en.html
Most popular Linux distros are not 100% free because the Linux kernel itself isn't actually 100% free. Linux has some binary blobs to make the kernal run smoothly on modern hardware, if you want to go full freetard you need to do some research on your hardware first and make sure they have open source firmware. You can also look into open-source BIOS as well if you want to go all the way.

Fedora and Debian are pretty close however.

You need to install a lot of dependencies and it might have features not everyone needs. Dolphin wants me to install Phonon which I absolutely do not need. I assume it uses it for file previews, but other file managers can do the same, without pulling in that. That's just one example.

Spend 10 seconds realizing that all of the distributions are the same, except for: release cycle, package manager and package policy. You're most likely switching between them for the "looks", without realizing that they all can look the same.

ok after you installed windows(be carefull to not nuke your linux partition)
boot into a live usb
open a terminal type
lsblk -f
and identify your linux partition
mount your linux partition
mount /dev/sdx1(not actually sdx1 but your partition identifier) /mnt/somedirectory

do that for all remaining partition you may have eg. for a sepperate home partition
 mount /dev/sdx2 /mnt/somedirectory/home

mount the temporary file systems
# cd /mnt/somedirectory
# mount -t proc proc proc/
# mount --rbind /sys sys/
# mount --rbind /dev dev/

change root into your old system
# chroot /mnt/somedirectory /bin/bash

finally generate a new grub config and reinstall grub
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

grub-install /dev/sdy
replace sdy here with the drive you want to boot from.
Also the grub specific instructions are for a bios system.
I really hope i did not fuck this up at some point.
I recommend you read this for chroot https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/change_root
and this on how to install grub https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GRUB#UEFI_systems

nah, that was just a command to make an empty folder called penis in the already-existing media folder, which is where your temporary mountpoints should live. When you plug a USB stick in, assuming automount is correctly configured it will create a folder inside the /media folder and mount the stick there for you.

Apologies for any confusion caused by my use of the beheld "penis", which is probably best reserved for tutorials in which the object is to create a new empty file in future.

I have a few questions, /flt/.
1) Can I search within subfolders when uploading? I kind of miss the slow explorer with the ability to search patterns on subdirectories and the entire filename.
2) May you link me to a place where I can solve the thumbnail upload problem?
3) I haven't looked at the daily moon thread on a certain board, but how would I set up keyboards to write Kana?
4) Would I be able to use my discrete GPU on Linux if I setup a passthrough? I'd love to keep using Linux at all times, even on gaymes. Using a KVM would be a rarity or with Windows only software.
5) Is there a good foobar alternative on Linux? I tried deadbeef, but I didn't dedicate much time in it and gave up on it. Clementine is fine everywhere except how it shows search results.
6) Is there a good Honeyview alternative for viewing korean non-animated comic strips? I've been using Mcomix for a while and it's neat, tried up ahoviewer too but it has some problems. I'd say both are neat, but would like to know if better alternatives exist.
7) On keyboards, I have a Logitech g710+ which has 6 keys dedicated for macros with 3 groups to switch them. They map to numbers right now, would I need to change the keyboard on xfce so that it recognizes the keys?
