I've got a 5.1 system hooked onto my computer (speakers to sub, sub to motherboard). I'd like to plug in headphone and mic to the motherboard as well, not the front jacks.
Is there good 3rd party software on windows that takes into account the realtek HD audio drivers and the included windows audio settings to easily switch between headphone and 5.1 speakers without plugging out the cables?
I'm having a weird issue where the rear speakers half work when I plug in my headphones and have to change a bunch of settings to get the rear speakers working fully again.
>>

>For the newfags that keep replying to the "Belgian shitposter"

am I the belgian shitposter?
I am belgian, but I try not to shitpost
I also don't do any of the things on that list

after an AKGay fagboy made some thread on /int/ about headphones recommending AKG and ridiculing anything else, people started talking about a belgianfag because I posted in that thread

IIRC the guy was from the US of Gay and there weren't any other Belgians so I dont know where it came from
>>
My Monoprice 8320s are ear rape. 8320s sound great but they sound more ear rape than ER4S.

You read that tomshardware article claiming that nothing actually beats realtek in sound quality, didn't you?
>>
>>53534705
then where the fuck did the belgian thing come from if it wasnt the /int/ thread
>>
>>53534718
>You read that tomshardware article claiming that nothing actually beats realtek in sound quality, didn't you?
No, I've had this setup for 10+ years, had it hooked up to a Dvix player on tv before. What is the correct way to do it on pc? I'm really lost as to what I should choose, hd audio realtek, direct sound, wasabi...
>>
>>53534729
if you stop shitposting you don't have to worry about where it came from.

>>53534775
DAC + Active speakers would be the cheapest way to go

receiver + amp + passive speakers would be the high end route

if you're talking just using your onboard then probably wasapi if it supports it

It's this dinosaur.
http://www.cnet.com/products/typhoon-power-system-5-1-speaker-system-for-pc/
I've never had a soundcard or a reciever. Do I need one for such a weak system?
Wasapi works fine until I plug out my headphones and plug them back in again, then I lose a lot bass and the rear speakers sound very thin.
that's why I was wondering if I could use other software to control the switch between headphone/speakers.
If there is no such thing, what's a good cheap receiver for this system, preferably where switching between headphone and speakers doesn't mess up the settings?
>>
>>53534872
If you're using windows 10 that could be the problem with the audio drivers.

For that system I wouldn't worry about new hardware. It won't really take advantage of the difference in quality.

My advice is to just put an interconnect cable in your motherboard so when you plug your headphones in and have to deal with having two devices in one output you don't have to reach around the back of your computer and unplug the headphones each time.
>>
>>53534997
Actually forgot to ask how are you plugging those in? 3.5-RCA cable? Where do your headphones go? If they're in the front panel that would be what's fucking you up each time. The device or driver just can't handle the switch.

Using Win 8.1. I'll buy an extension cord (same thing as interconnect cable right?) thanks for the tip.
>how are you plugging those in
satellites go into subwoofer audio in with RCA, subwoofer uses 3.5mm/1,8" connectors from audio out to the motherboard.
Unfortunately when I plug in my headphones to the green audio jack nothing happens, music is still coming from the speakers. It only recognizes the headphones when I plug them in the front.
thanks for the help btw, appreciate it.

Fun fact, here are the anime archetype equivalents of certain headphone brands
Senpai - Sennheiser (senpaiser)
Onii-chan - Stax
Baka - Bose
Imouto - Grado
Onee-Chan - Akg
Otouto - Beyerdynamic

These are objective and may not be altered, but you are allowed to discuss the implications of this.

Didn't I tell you in the last thread that it's definitely an upgrade. Or are you looking for other opinions from someone else?

The upgrade is like going from a GTX750ti to a GTX970. When a GTX980 is like a HD800 or Stax or something.

I've heard the Superlux HD681 and HyperX Cloud (Takstar Pro 80).

HD681 is boomy and bright. HyperX Cloud was very thin sounding and no detail. In comparison to the MSR7.

Sidegrade. Not a upgrade.

Leave them. Use the back panel output and plug the headphones there. Don't enable any "enhancements" from your driver suite. Get a good equalizer if you want to mess around with the sound. Equalizer APO is the best thing for Windows.

/hpg/, I had a question on the previous thread, but it auto-saged, so permit me to ask again:

I just got a pair of MDR-V6 as my starter headphones, and they do sound great. However, my onboard sound isn't the greatest so do I get myself a sound card, or go the DAC+Amp route? I'm also interested in virtual surround through dolby headphones, but the information in the wiki was lacking, could I also get some tips on how to implement this?

They sound great, especially with what I like to listen to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZQTYqxu4Us but since this is my first pair of real headphones I can't compare them.
As you can see I attached a v-moda boom pro mic to it because a good desktop mic was overkill for me. The mic is good but not great, might need to buy a 3,5mm to usb adapter to get rid of the noise. They are amazing in games as well. Gun sounds, explosions, ambient noise, spacial awareness, all great.

Do the Jaybirds give as good surround feel as a let's say a dedicated surround headset that covers your whole ear?

I have a pretty big head and they don't still or fall. AD900x are pretty light and have a good clamp so they should do that. Benefit is that they're self adjustable. I found the best way to tell if you have a larger than average head is by had size. If we are talking metric, above 59 would be a large head.

Infact it doesn't, "K702 are hard-to-drive headphone" is just a meme perpetuated by "audiophiles and amp lovers. Just get a source having less than 6 ohm output impedanced and you're fine. The hardest-to-drive headphone among the big three is the DT880 600 ohm, which needs an amp.

>>53538451
I love the sound of the K702, but if I ever had to EQ it I'd probably raise the <80 Hz region by 4-5 dB and maybe tone the 2 kHz peak down if you feel like it's sibilant and too bright.

>>53538486
DT880 has best bass below 100 Hz, K702 is flat from 100 Hz up to 1.5 kHz but has a peak around 2-2,5 kHz, HD600 has linear upper-mids and treble. All three might need EQ and are great for mastering, then I suggest to get the cheapest one and EQ it to your preference.
>>
My DT770 came in the mail today, had them loosen up for about two and a half hours.

My phone can drive them on it's own, but it takes almost 80% volume.

Bass is great, punchy and clear. So its great for house and techno. I expected it to be quite crap on some more detailed stuff. But it handles She brings the rain by Can like a champ too.

I can definetly say I'm satisfied, and very glad I didn't splurge 250+ euros on a whim.

Only downsides are that clearly it does get near the limit of a phone or lighter mp3 players output, but since it works for me, there isn;t any problem.

The other thing is that it seems to clamp a little tight for comfort, but I assume it will loosen up after some wear or careful bending,

Imaging and soundstage are not the strong points of IEMS but are far superior in comfort when you have so much stuff strapped to your head. Gaming headphones are complete garbage. Only the Logitech G933 are halfway decent. You are better off with a light set of headphones and a separate microphone.

Recommendations for full sized light weight headphones goes as follows:
Sony MDR-MA900
Sennheiser HD600
SHP9500 only because they feel light weight and can be used with the v-moda boom pro.

Try some IEMs. The reason i say this because for hot weather you need three things. Minimal contact from the headband, breathable pads, and an open enclosure. Now if you don't want IEMS you can get the Beyerdynamics DT880s, Sony MDR-MA900, Takstar HI 2050, AudioTechnica AD line, and maybe the HE-400Ss.

Need some advice. So I got a pair of Philips Fidelo X2 from a friend recently and was wondering if I really need an amp dac combo. I know they have a low impendence, but I wasn't sure if something like a dac would improve the audio at all for use with my computer.

Just use a low output impedance source (something below 3-4 Ohm). The X2 are super easy to drive, don't buy an amp like the folks on r/headphones. The X2 still won't sound as good as more neutral headphones though.

I really wish I could understand this whole impedance thing faster. I just want to burn my money already.

So the K702 only have 62 ohms but they still need an amp because of their (low?) sensitivity. Also I think I remember hearing that the amp impedance should be 10% of the headphones, so a better amp for the K702 should have 6 ohms? I have no idea what that even means though.

It seems most up-to-date stuff I read just says to slap on the E10K and call it a day but this only has 1 ohm? What am I supposed to even take from pic related

K702 have an average sensitivity and a low impedance. This means that they need a certain amount of both voltage and current to work properly, plus you need a source with low output impedance in order to avoid distortion or other problems. The ideal ratio between headphone impedance and source output impedance should be 8:1. The Fiio E10K work very well with them, you don't need to look any further.

Precision: the ideal ratio should be ANYTHING ABOVE 8:1. The damping factor between K702 and the E10K is around 59, because it results from 62 ohm (K702 impedance) / 1, 04 ohm (Fiio E10K output impedance).

I enjoy all types of music. I generally listen to alternative music though, but I do listen to pop and some other bass heavy songs. Just a large variety overall.

>Past headphones
Turtle beach ZSeven.

Pros:
- they were pretty comfortable to wear all day, although my ears began to hurt towards the 6hr mark.

-audio quality seemed fine.

-I enjoyed the isolation from my background noise. I generally have heavy background noise so I prefer noise cancelling.

Cons:

- the build quality wasn't great.

I've also had a few around ~$50.00 Sony headsets that treated me well but they are not worth mentioning.

Conclusion;

Looking for a high quality over the ear noise cancelling headphone that can give me excellent audio quality while remaining extremely comfortable for long usage.

Just order them online. If you can't get those then I'm afraid anything else is not 90% there to HD800-tier.

why would i want completely flat headphones

Bump.

I don't know
why would you want 681 evo

if you disregard the subjectivity of the sound profile, 681 is better

MDR7506 or the ATH-M40X.

You don't need anything. They have a standard 3.5mm headphone jack as well as a larger adapter so you can plug the headphones into something like a reciever.

>I really wish I could understand this whole impedance thing faster. I just want to burn my money already.
Stop looking at the impedance, that's a good start. Impedance does not tell you whether you need to get an amplifier, the sensitivity does.

The FiiO E10K has an output impedance of roughly 1 Ohm. This means the output circuitry in the amplifier has a resistance of one Ohm. This is good as the amplifier does not waste power on its own output and it ensures even voltage division in the load side. The lower the output impedance on the amplifier, the better.

Ohm is not a spec of the output power in any shape or form, it's a unit of resistance and output impedance it tells how much the amplifier resists its own current at the output.

That "rule of thumb" of load impedance vs amplifier output impedance is a bit silly. Some say output impedance should be 1/8th of the load impedance, others 1/10th and I've heard anything from twice as high to 1/25th. Lower is better and these figures are usually based on values past which the relation of the impedance wont have a meaningful effect on the frequency. Pic related is Sennheiser HD 558 driven from amplifiers with different output impedance. At the higher output impedance you see a hump in the bass and a slight elevation in the highs. These are the points where the headphones' impedance is the highest as you can see here:

http://graphs.headphone.com/graphCompare.php?graphType=7&graphID[]=2861&scale=30

To simplify: if the output impedance is high the headphones will play louder at frequencies where the headphone impedance is the highest. If your amplifier has very low output impedance in relation to the headphone impedance(e.g. 1/10th) this won't happen. If your headphones have a relatively flat impedance curve(K702), this won't happen. The relation of output impedance and headphone impedance can have an effect on the frequency response but this is unrelated to amplification.

Audiobot a shit, E10K+702 works.

Your budget was kinda iffy, you can increase it a bit for better V-shaped like dt770. If not, well meme50x aren't that bad for v-shaped. It just kinda bassy. Take a look for takstar pro80 anyway.
>>
>>53551533
this is why AKGs are my favourite just because of how easy it is to replace the headband, earpads, .etc

I'll cry if I ever have to replace the elastic thing though, nothing's ever perfect.

When listening to music, should you set your music to 100% on windows and then any% on the software you are using to get the best audio quality?
>>
>>53552075
Everything but the last in the chain should be on 100%, so yes.
>>
>>53552113
I'm not the one you replied to. How about if my cheapo amp has channel imbalance? Even if I keep it 100% on windows.
>>
>>53552151
Lower the windows, looks like channel imbalance in IEM at low volume amplifier is pretty common case.

800S is not a great idea considering the glut cheaper HD 800 on market right now.
There are plenty of things not to like about the HD 800, 800S doesn't come close to fixing them all. Ultimately, EQ is still the better solution to both.
L-700 is similar to the other Lambda stax. If you want an inexpensive taste of Stax flavor and coloration, pick up a 207 instead.
This is just my thought as someone who doesn't like Stax too much: besides the SR-007, if you are looking for differences between the Stax models, they amount to small differences in tone, subtleties in tuning and ability.

I don't see much of a reason not to EQ, besides not knowing how. If you are seriously considering STAX, you aren't too worried about lugging around additional electronics to listen to your headphones.

>>53548472
Get a listen to HE-X while you are at it.

>lol maybe learn something about how the resonance is actually caused because it isn't the driver
But it is.
Even if it weren't, it would still help.

>>53550102
The ideal ratio is whatever doesn't attenuate the sound too much. Damping factor is sorely misunderstood and propped up with more attention to it than is really needed. There are many headphones that don't care about your fanciful notions of impedance.

Thanks. But I'm looking for a more retro look. Those look like the ones I was forced to wear in middleschool computer class

>Preferred type of headphone
Full-sized, Mid sized? I like on-ear as it's the most comfortable and I'd be wearing it for long periods of time, comfort is n1 priority.
>Open or closed
Not sure, probably closed. Is there such a thing as semi-closed? I previously had open, but I'm not sure if my enjoyment came from the fact that they were open.
>Comfort level
All around headphones, for travel and home use too, something that won't come off if I move around too much and can block out some of the ambient noise of a train car, but I'd like to use it at home and at work too. I don't mind if it's big, I travel with bags and I'm on the road for most of the day.
>Preferred tonal balance
don't really know, I think I'm tone deaf.
>Past headphones
HD555, bought them like 5 years ago when they came out.

I don't like listening to music with others, I like to listen to it alone at home. I was very happy with my Sennheiser HD555s, it was the first time I could get lost in music for hours.
My hearing is absolutely not refined and I'm probably tone deaf, so bear with me. What I liked about them, was how I could seperate each instrument when listening to music and notice details in it I've never noticed before and I could catch new bits listening to the same song even after hours.

Long story short, one of the drivers died, I replaced it (driver cost like 50$) and a month later the other driver died. Planned obsolescence is a bitch, it's also very scruffed up and stuff, don't want to solder another one in as no one keeps right side drivers in stock in my country.

I'd appreciate any tips and recommendations, this is not my field of expertise at all.

xpt100 if you don't particularly like treble
takstar pro 80 if you do

also I've been listening to music on the go and at home with earbuds that came with my phone for a year now, because HD555s died.
Listening to music less and less now, I miss it.
It's killing me slowly.

Should I go the the O2+ODAC or the Magni 2+Modi 2?

>>53552436
If its a significant price difference then get whatever is cheaper.
>>
I see you advise buying a DAC if there is background noise. Is there a solution for background noise with microphones?
Any good and cheap DAC that support both or should I go with a 3,5mm to usb adapter? Recommendations would be nice.
