Anyone know of an ETA for 3rd party 480's? i already resold my reference card and I don't want to fish out $300 for a marginal increase on the 1060 with less VRAM

I never understand the attraction behind eVGA.

Sapphire is a great company, but eVGA had their snafu with their off-center heatpipes, and their cooling is usually mediocre at best relative to how loud they are.

Zotac can output some surprisingly good and cheap cards, but all the same, I would always look up reviews for individual cards.

MSI has had consistently good cards for awhile, at least in their mainstream section (Gaming models).

Don't mean to be 'that guy' but I think the only reason /g/ fawns over Sapphire is because they're not as mainstream as other manufacturers. Otherwise, there's no reason why you can't recommend a good MSI over a comparative Sapphire.

Shit. Their 390(X) is the only voltage locked 390(X) on the market and the cooler is extremely noisy. I'd only put Asus below them for AMD cards these days.

>>55618661
The attraction of EVGA is their unrivalled customer service. Their cards aren't spectacular, but they're solid, middle of the pack performers under every metric.

>>55618793
Appearance is irrelevant really. They make the best coolers around, taming even things like the 290X down to around 70 degrees under full load without sounding like a hurricane. Their build quality is also second to none. Look at that fucking PCB. That sexy little heatsink on the VRMs, which you'll never even see unless you take the cooler off. It doesn't need to be that elaborate. But it is, because Sapphire are fucking great.
>>
>>55618793
They basically made Hawaii worth buying with their Tri-X cooler. Both affordable and reliable, also no shitty Elpida ram. You couldn't get equal value unless you invested in their Lightning. Twin Frozr series doesn't compete and had issues with dying fans. Also even with their Lightning series there was a driver issue where one fan wouldn't turn on.

>>55618876
See the reasons I listed above. Their Gaming series is much better though.

Meant equal performance, Lightning was expensive as fuck.

Still better to get a Vapor-X like picturered in >>55618911 unless you found one really cheap.
>>
>>55618876
No, it's because their coolers are just plain better than MSI's. Take it from someone who has owned both a Sapphire 290X Vapor-X and an MSI 290X Gaming that the former was the far, far superior card. Much lower temperatures under load and much quieter. Even the MSI 290X Lightning doesn't come close to the Vapor-X in terms of noise levels.

Sapphire aren't a meme. They're the best AMD partner by none. The idea that they're not mainstream is silly too. They're by far the largest AMD-exclusive brand.

As someone with a 270 at the moment, the 480 seems like it'd be a great card for me, with roughly twice the performance.

Asus? They just recycle their Nvidia coolers on AMD cards, which often results in poor connection with the die and subsequently higher temperatures. It's not like their coolers have even been quiet. Their 390X Strix makes more noise than the Sapphire 390X Nitro whilst running 15 degrees warmer.

>>55619239
I remember Gigabyte's 290X being fairly underwhelming. It was better than the 390X though, which is absolute garbage. They clearly gave no fucks about the 300 series.

I remember that PowerColor issue too. Sneaky.

XFX 2XX DD series cards were terrible because they regularly ran the VRMs at 100+C due to their shitty single plate design. Fucking terrible cooler but people bought it anyway because they liked the design.

The problem with their 290(X) was that the default fan curve was way too gentle. You can bring the VRMs right down by setting a more aggressive custom one (doesn't need to be 100% like in the example shown, a happy medium can be found). It still shouldn't really have been an issue though, and they did fix it for the 390(X).
>>
>>55619396

Most of EVGA's sales and hype are from international customers as they are the only manufacturer with international warranty. For example I can order a 1080 locally for around 1200 kangaroos. Off amazon USA or UK it is 900-950 kangaroos delivered to my door (with amazons return policy and such)

Also EVGA has the stepup program which is nice.

Ive never used their warranty so I cant comment.

Incentives offered by AMD/Nvidia. Sapphire work closer with AMD than anyone and also design their reference coolers. PNY have a similar relationship with Nvidia, but they're a far less prominent brand for whatever reason. Other brands actually do sell both under different brands. Zotac and Sapphire are owned by the same parent company.

XFX are an interesting one as they used to make Nvidia cards exclusively, but decided to start making AMD cards as well late last decade. Nvidia threw a shitfit at this and gave them an ultimatum of ditching AMD or losing their rights to make Nvidia cards. Of course, we know how that turned out. It's telling that Nvidia would only try to bully a smaller company like XFX in that way. They wouldn't dare piss off Asus or MSI or Gigabyte, because they're too big.

I've had 4 HIS cards, 2x 6870 and 2x 7850. 3 cards died with different problems within <2 years.

Never again
>>
>>55626093
it took you 3 dead cards to stop giving them money? lol

>>Multimonitor setup is something that still works like in 2002 on AMD cards
>Really makes you think

Idling 2 monitors on a brand new amd card consumes more power than stress testing high end laptops

I hope the 470 doesn't do this either or i'm just getting a used nvidia instead
>>
They are waiting for the 1060 to be released so they can tweak it up a little more to pass the 1060's benchmarks. It's so obvious really.
>>
>>55614375
That's not actually real, right?
>>
>>55625498
Uhh, do you not see the sink on the VRMs?
>>

Who told you its twice as fast as the 960? Also

>literally

Im afraid you have to go back to leldit
>>
>>55627815
The whole thread is about 480s but to be fair he didn't specify that he's definitely getting a 480 as the AMD card of choice. I don't think it's a huge stretch to say the 480 is >literally twice as fast as the 960 though. The 960 is pretty fucking bad.

Are there any reliable 480 vs 1060 benchmarks out yet
>>

>reliable benchmarks before the card is released
Let me think about that one for a bit and I'll get back to you.
>>
>>55627969
Just making sure there haven't been any leaks. I haven't kept up with the 1060.

>cheap
It has to handle 250w of output when fully saturated to keep an overclocked 150w GPU in good temps, I don't think cheap is the right word to use here. Hypothetical 1500Mhz RX480s are going to use 220-240w. Before you argue "Well we just want watercooling at stock for the temps" you still need a sizeable TDP headroom for that to happen. I've a 250w rated Arctic TT3 on my OCd GPU that uses 165w in torture tests and it will still break 75C with fans at 55% (still inaudible in the room)

As an example, the FuryX watercooler is said to be a 400-500w TDP design and that's the headroom necessary for this 220-250w card to stay at 60C.

WHy does a 480 need 2x 8pin connectors??

Oh, never mind then.

Never. Shit is DoA with 1060 AIBs coming out. They had a month to convince poorfags to buy one, now 970/1070 gtx are back on top of sales in both Amazon US and Amazon UK. It's over.
