Lay it on me: how fucked am I if I buy a Rift?
I just want VR for vidya, and the Vive is fucking expensive compared to the Rift.
If money is that much of a concern just get OSVR. It's basically a less comfortable Rift.

I just got my rift a few days ago.
Been playing project cars, elite dangerous, and farlands.
To be honest the only experience that made me go "wow" was elite dangerous. The resolution isn't high enough for complete immersion.
Just wait for the next generation, as it stands the rift is not worth the asking price.

Vive is better right now, and the $200 premium is worth it for room scale, even if you think you'll play a lot of your games seating/standing. If you're willing to take a risk, the Rift may end up being as good once Touch comes out, but that remains to be seen. Also, worth keeping in mind the rift is also generally more comfortable. But room scale is absolutely worth it, it's just a question of whether you're willing to risk it/wait for Oculus Touch.
Don't buy either. Wait. More games need to be released and there's rumors of a version 2 of the Vive ready to launch probably around Q4 or Q1 2017 to compete with the launch of Oculus Touch.
Oh and VR without motion controls is an incomplete experience. You pay that extra $200 for the Vive for that reason alone.
I'd suggest you wait for the more advanced,cheaper versions. They will be better for sure
