Should I upgrade to windows 8.1? I am on windows 8. It's free but this is Microsoft free which might mean something else.

Does it offer anything useful to me, save for DX12? I've used 10 for a short while, it didn't perform any differently than 7 or 8.1 on a SSD, had a shitty UI, forced updates with no choice which ones to take, and overall was just shit.

You can disable updates easily if you don't like it.
And I'm sure there are other features with the upgrade, but I only upgraded from 7 for dx11.1 and dx12. Use my desktop for photoshop and video games, everything else I do on my Sony Vaio running w7 and old HP laptop running Fedora 23 with lxqt.
Can't upgrade the Sony thanks to the manual graphics switch not working on w10, otherwise I would.
Honestly, I'm getting ~10% better performance with my gtx670 in gta v and bd4 than I was on 7. Pretty sure it's from dx11.1 support.
