YaST is SUSE's answer to the clusterfuck that is the unix concept of creating individual tools to do each separate task on an OS, which in an opensource operating system developed by a community, means standardized interfaces and ways of doing things aren't even a wet dream.
YaST takes a shitload of different programs for configuring SUSE and unifies them under one interface and does stuff transparently under the hood to make sure they play nice with each other.
In a very rough sense, it is equivalent to the Control Center on a windows PC.
