>modem always starts shitting itself after 1-2 years, requiring a replacement
>router has lasted over 10 fucking years without any problems
Is this planned obsolescence?

You know what DOCSIS is right?
Also it's the whole "We're implementing faster internet therefore you need a new modem" kinda of thing.
I don't know what you're talking about, my shitty old fucking TI-AR7 conexant chipset based (Notoriously shite) modem+router is still going strong after all these years.
Swapped out the antenna, replaced the firmware with custom image, installed exhaust fan to remove the heat and it's been good for years.
Maybe you're some sort of little consumer bitch ?
Turned my internet off just take this picture for you, you little slut.

>installed exhaust fan

Sorry you live in Australia, good luck with your shitty internet
A modem shitting itself after 1-2 years sounds like an electrical issue, either on your power outlets or on the coaxial. Perhaps you should get a surge protector with coax in/out.
My cable company at home rents the modem for free (i.e. service is the same price per month if you bring your own modem, there is no modem rental fee on my bill). My parent's vacation house, I bought an Arris 6183 and that's been going for a few months. The prior modem (now retained for free for cable company VOIP) has been going strong for two years (and it's ancient, probably 10 year old hardware).
I currently have an old WRT54G with some old Tomato firmware, I need a faster router though since I'm upgrading to 100mbit.
Is the WRT1900ACS the one to get?
