it won't play the gif, just preview it like you asked
and it seems possible to make it play the gif
but I don't know exactly how w3m-img does the image thingy
I think maybe it draws the image on top of a given area
whats left is just taking all the frames and drawing them successively

I think the borders are an eyesore. It triggers my autism and rather not use it. I prefer thunar anyways because it has better mtp support
