What is the "correct" way to encrypt an SSD? I'm using Windows so dm-crypt is not an option and apparently Truecrypt is not supposed to be used with SSDs.

If you are using Windows 10 Pro build 1511 or later, Bitlocker because it uses XTS mode now, also supports native SSD encryption if supported, and doesn't have any suspend problems.
Back up your key to a file, not to OneDrive.

There was that one interesting presentation at DEFCON about increasing the cost of recovery instead of actually trying hard to prevent access.
The reasoning being that if the cost are high enough, they won't really finish the job.
