freetype literally just implemented subpixel hinting in their latest patch

fonts look amazing now. they're closer to windows's rendering than mac rendering though.

I figure I should emphasize this: the best font rendering you can get on Linux right now is Infinality, which is a patch for FreeType. Maybe FreeType has caught up in its most recent versions, though you might be stuck trawling the AUR for that. Really you'll probably have to trawl the AUR either way: find either the newest version of FreeType, or find a version that's been patched with Infinality.
