Who macOS Sierra here?
>>

What's the point of '1.34 MB, 4844x3200' when it looks blurry as fuck?
>>
Masterrace reporting in.

Can't say I noticed any positive changes yet and it's definitely a bit less responsive, but guess that's given with a beta.
>>
>>55480989
I'm gonna try it by fall. el capitan is too damn comfy but I think it's gonna be similar.

Dropping the X? Not dropping the mac instead?
>>
fonts are so fucking blurry on os x. i don't know how people use it.
>>

They're not blurry for me. OS X has the perfect font rendering, not pixelated like Windows and not too soft like most renderers on linux distros.

she talks slower and i think my macbook didnt come with a good mic (compared to iPhone). i barely have to talk and my iPhone siri understands me. my Mac one takes a billion times to hear what im saying and even then it's pretty shit.

>>
>>55483394

under the hood there's a lot of improvement. you could say the same about El Capitan(what yosemite should've been) but in fact life battery got better, more consistent UI and running smooth and faster.
>>
>>55483538
I barely use any of the stock ui, most of the time either in my IDE, firefox or terminal and I'm connected to a power supply most of the time.

I'm actually finding the OS elements and disk access to be better than El Cap. Everything loads quickly. I don't think I would load it on a laptop because the battery drain is a bit of an unknown, but on other Macs there is no reason to not try it out.
>>
I would, but I need to know whether it's just El Capitan with Siri and a different, more annoying method of using unsigned software or if it's actually faster or snappier or whatever.

But they are normal sized, just because you're still having a monitor from the last decade, doesn't mean you should blame osx.
>>
>>55486407

I paid about $3300 for the Mac Pro and then about another $230 for the 32 GB Crucial RAM on Amazon. It's as good a new and with came with a full warranty. I guess someone had buyers remorse and returned a perfectly good machine.

I've had it since early 2015 and it has served me well, but I wouldn't recommend buying it now.

If I had to do it again I would have actually spent more and gone with the 8 core and D700 as they will be more capable for a longer period. If there is ever a big price drop on that model I would grab one, unless Apple comes out with a new Mac Pro.
>>
>>55486581
El Capitan is faster, better looking Mavericks, which better battery life too (well, not relevant for mac) and Sierra is pretty much El Capitan with couple improvements.

What's your issue with the newer ones, SIP?

right. random gfx driver freezes. randomly messed up x11 configuration. ux changes with almost every major release.

hmmm okay. good to know. i'm pretty happy with my setup. i spent about $2500 with monitors and everything else included, but i'm now topped out on RAM (at 32GB, but still) and i think i'd have to make more substantive upgrades (e.g. replace the motherboard or something) to make more upgrades like CPU and whatnot. i guess the case and PSU are good for a long while though.

Normally with operating systems I usually do this to check compatibility with my existing setup and report issues about it if there's any problems. Not sure if that's a big issue on OS X but I'd imagine it's about the same with other systems.
>>
>>55490148
Three months are quite a bit in the tech world, though you're right mostly, unless somebody is a dev, there is not too much of a point. But hey, sense of wonder and shit ... sadly it was underwhelming so far and iOS10 was more interesting with "Raise to wake" stuff and messages/Music changes.

>>55490248
That's a good point too, they actually take care of reported bugs, so the beta is a good opportunity, specially if you're using some niche software that is unlikely to get too much attention.

When you can buy high-end desktops for half the price, you should be wary of a $3300 laptop with specs found on machines also for half the price. With Apple, you're paying several hundred more dollars on a device just for the OS that it comes with.

It isn't about being cheap, but about not getting raped up the ass by Apple's ridiculous prices.

I wouldn't buy it again today. Eventually there will be a refresh as soon as it is possible to power a 5K display over a single Thunderbolt wire. I feel they may announce in September and then start shipping in January like last time.

Buying an expensive Mac like this is generally about using software like FCP which is highly optimized for OSX. FCP on this Mac is much faster than running Vegas on a higher spec PC. We have 5930K Win 10 setups here that are not as fast, although they are certainly nice machines.

Also macOS is comfy etc.

Can't wait to upgrade, Sierra sounds nice, like a goddess. El cap is a pirate name and it feels weird loving it.

ONCE AGAIN
>>
As an rMBP owner for the past 6 months I must say I dont even remember its an apple product half the time anymore, I have a PC that I mainly use in the morning and afternoon, and near bed time I hop on my macbook in bed and continue doing what I do
Also every new release of macOS just adds in like 1 pointless thing and fixes bugs and stuff, so Sierra is essentially just el capitan to me but with siri
>>
>>55501352
nice blog

>>
Just installed Sierra
I still have the option to allow installation from "everywhere"
Anybody else?

>>55501352
That's because it's essentially that
OS X (now macOS) updates have 2 levels
The first one is a big change in the OS
This happened from Yosemite to el Capitan (visual overhaul, new metal API, etc)
And the second one is a aoet of upgrade of the current version, like Sierra is to El Capitan
This was more noticeable with pre-10.9 versions
Leopard>snow leopard>lion>mountain lion
Versions with the same animals would be the second kind of update, while changes in the animal name would be an update of the first kind

What I want to ask is

Why do they call it Sierra if it's just El Capitan with an extra app
>>
>>55503414
I bet you also think Windows 8 is just Windows 7 with Metro slapped on
>>
>>55503414
They couldn't find anything else to copy from MS since they've already copied everything else into OSX.
>>
>>55503436
>Apple copies from MS
OS X is always years ahead of Microsoft. The only thing I can even think of that MS had first is window snapping
>>
>>55503452
this
>>
>>55503434
No, Windows 8 changed quite a few things. It added the ribbon UI, it added a different start menu and "apps", removed desktop gadgets and removed a few other features too. They added tiny things like being able to mount cd image files. It was actually a substantial change.

Now tell me, what else is there from this? They didn't bother with the UI, that's for sure. But what else? I only see Siri, some people complaining about the option to use unsigned applications and that's it. Not even a performance increase or anything, I watched a few videos. For me this looks more like Windows XP SP2 to SP3.

Experimenting heating problems, or I least I think so. It may be that fans kick in faster, at around 60 degrees, instead of the 65-70 I needed before the upgrade to get to hear them.

Anyone here with the same problem?
>>
>>55504219
How long have you been tuning sierra?
Its normal for the computer to overheat after the update, depending on your drive size and how many files ypi have in it, it might take up to 45 minutes to index all the files
Check activity monitor, MDS and MDS_worker should be at the top if this is what's happening
>>
>>55504297
three days already. I live in a hot area so I'm used to overheating, but in sierra is quite easy to make it go 60º+ with just browsing with many tabs open.

but well, what can I expect from a beta.

With every OSX release I fear that Afloat will stop working. Can anyone say if it's still OK on Sierra?

p.s. I know Sierra goes some way to building that functionality in, but still not as powerful as simply allowing me to float any window on top.
