Reviews on chink sites suck. Users are not even encouraged to be impartial. In aliexpress,stores give obvious hints that you should ask for a refound or something before even considering a review other than five stars and most people that bother to write one don't even talk about the product, so I agree.
Xiaomi is a reputable company in general. /csg/ follows this meme for a reason, their products have crazy high value for money compared to western ones (Samsung, Fitbit, Apple, you know the drill).
As of reviews from prominent sources, you'll probbaly never see them because there's no interest from either side. Chink companies never spend a fortune on such marketing so they'll never sponsor the reviewers you know off to shill for them indirectly by getting their products, and those reviewers don't really want to break the market because if everyone realised that chinese products are basically the same for a better price then they'd have nothing to review.
There are useful consumer reviews though. There are youtubers who really put effort into reviewing the products they themselves bought. The microphone reviews I were seing were all by consumers but metered the specs of the mics (and sound cards) more accurately than the manufacturers.

Couple thoughts after 2 days with my xiaomi redmi note 3 pro
- Speaker on the phone is actually good. I mean I don't really use that often but I was sitting on the couch listening to a podcast this morning and the speaker was very loud, I didn't have it turned up to max - I think 50%
- the DAC on the phone is pretty okay, It's day and night compared to my last phone - the nexus 5 (which to be fair isn't saying much) Volume on the phones dac is good, I don't even listen at 50%. (nexus 5 I hit 100% and still needed more volume for some headphones)
- The leds on the phone bleed - classic sign of cheap plastic / poor light isolation. So when you're in bed, the bottom buttons bleed light so you don't just see the symbols you see a light mess at all around. I ended up turning this off because it was irritating me enough. not a deal breaker but it's small touches like that which differentiate high end phones. (I do have the silver one, with a white face which exacerbates the issue. )
- Camera is decent. I don't really know that much about cameras in general but it's better than the nexus 5 (which again apparently had a pretty shitty camera) Main thing I like is that the shutter is fast. Has a weird function called 'beautify' that sorta distorts your pictures so you don't look as fugly - I mean i'm mad sexy so it didn't really make a difference, but it did do a pretty good job at guessing my age. There are some fun filters( fisheye, light rays, etc) you can use if you're a preteen.
- Phone is super super fast. Like I'm coming from a nexus 5 which was getting a little slow, but it's the first android device I have owned where it was just super super snappy. You open chrome and it just opens instantly. Browsing the web is very fast. I guess this is what rich people have been enjoying for years but it's a new experience for a pleb like me.
Overall good phone. Worth the $285 (CAD). I think you would be hard pressed to find something better without going $600+

Yeah this sorta stuff is silly. I just shrug and enjoy paying 1/10th the price and getting exactly the same quality.
Audio people are like that, china == garbage. They will attack every angle, the caps are crap, the IC's are fake (ignoring that they are probably made in the same fab, and in many cases for vintage IC's have been tested to actually be superior and better spec'd) PCB layout is shit (even though the Chinese read the same forums and copy the best...)
Some people can't possible believe that a country who have manufactured more in the last year than north america in the last 100 years could possible be good. If you start to look up the fabs in china their people are pretty innovative.

Yeah there is so much shit you can buy that is straight up bought from china and marked up. Like there was a xbox360->PS3 adapter on playasia for ~$80. I paid $10 on ali. Exact same thing, same picture same shit quality, and most likely worked exactly the same.
I'm not going to say there isn't a legitimate business to be made buying stuff from china and hand picking the best and reselling it for a mark up. That's a valuable service and I would totally pay a bit of a markup (and ideally it would ship out of NA) the issue I have is when it's a MASSIVE markup like that adapter from playasia. Hell the cost of shipping was the price of the one on ali.....
