apple gets a lot of hate here but you have to admit the mac pro was an excellent design when it was announced in 2013

since there are expected updates coming this year so who's /upgradingtomacpro/ this year?

I thought the way they got all the parts so tightly compact was pretty innovative, but at the same time the Mac Pro is pretty god damn ugly. Glossy plastic is a very dated design, reminds me of cheap Chinese electronics. There are much better looking cases out there.

Round designs are great from an aesthetics point of view but rather impractical in actual use. Harder to access parts, and not really space efficient either because nearly everything else on a desk would be some form of rectangular.

We have six of these at work. If you've never seen one, they're a lot smaller than you think they are. But then they have to be small enough to fit on a desk, because all the fucking cables for everything Mac-centric are only four inches long.

Also don't put anything like a book on top of one while it's running.

No, it's still objectively bad and throttles under demanding use.

Redesigning the wheel doesn't automatically make the revision better or clever. In this case, the only way to get the footprint down was to have a shared heatsink that really wasn't big enough for any major component on its own.

Maybe as a high-end counterpart to the Mac Mini, not as a lobotomized low-end workstation with no expansion capability whatsoever unless you want to rely on latent interfaces that fill your desk with ugly clutter, totally missing the point of the fucked up cylindrical design that is incompatible with pretty much any piece of human-style furniture in existence.

>>55451077
Considering the Mac Pro's primary market is multimedia content editors, it's very necessary to be able to run a lot of disks to store high-resolution video, or a co-processor like a Xeon Phi or Tesla if you're an education/scientific customer.

It's a ton of unnecessary compromise for a totally wrong market, they could have designed a nice-looking product that worked just as well without having to go for this retarded "space-saving" shit that ends up saving very little space at all in the end.

and even if you were lucky enough to work at a place fitted with 10-gig it's still slower than SAS or PCI-E storage and not nearly as reliable or consistent

You're 100% wrong there.

High end production houses use high speed SAN storage for multiple editors to access content.
iSCSI and SAS has plenty of performance for this kind of thing.
Most places have workstations with barely any flash storage built in just for a scratch disk, it's not worth buying more.

the machine pretty much has to be ran in less than 70 degree environments and even then it still will throttle when both gpu and cpu are under heavy load.

from a cost and manufacturing standpoint its fantastic. less parts and smaller design. allows them to build them cheaper than previous generations.

it also prevents people from being able to upgrade the video card and hard drives later on which has been their bane with the previous mac pro. a lot of users still kept their core 2 quads and early nehalem machines since the cpu was powerful enough and they were able to upgrade their video cards. even with non apple cards.

now with the itrash design you want faster gpu? buy a new itrash. want to upgrade your hard drive / ssd? buy a new itrash or litter your desk with externals.

No one is forcing you to buy superior Apple products. In fact, stay as far away as you can from them. We really do not need greasy NEET virgins associated with the Apple image. But i do need to interject: I bought a Mac Mini because of its compact design and i've got a 2012er one for around 120 bucks which was way better than buying a prebuilt $something in the same format with almost the same Specs. Also i bought my Macbook back in 2014 simply becauase it came with a SSD and 8Gb ram, back then i couldn't find a Laptop with the same spaces, it either came with a SSD but less Ram or 8GB ram but a fucking 1tb 5200 rpm hdd

That's.... what tv postproduction facilities uses.
A reality show make like 10TB a week, do you think we use external hdd?
(Source: i'm a tv postprod admin).

MacPro is still useless in a shared enviroment, but that another problem
>>
>>55454202
10tb a week is a lot, how do you check and select the final footage? How many people work on it?
(Asking cause i'm young and I'll probably work in this industry, most I did until now was 130gb for an event on my own, everything in low bitrate)
>>
>>55454288
Take in mind that a reality can go for 24/7 with multiple audio and HD video fluxes.
Ie. We are doing Jersey Shore in Spain for the second time (supershore now) and the house has 8 85MB/s fluxes with 8audio channel each. Every hour, every day for a month!

All workstations are gigabit/dualgigabit/10gigabit to get by.

Tv news are even worse because they keep a daily archive.
(Of course, if you work on events/single production at a time you need waaaaaaaaay less shit to work well)
