I got called a hacker because a teacher left their school password taped under their desk, which from there allowed access through various password resets and verification steps to gain access to other accounts.

Everyone who isn't into tech just uses iDevices and the Cloud, so it really doesn't matter anymore. The days of people being lost in Windows are over because nobody uses desktop PCs anymore unless you're an enthusiast or you need to use one at work.

Wrong. A hack is just doing something clever. A hacker is someone who does clever things. People who think otherwise have spent too much time watching television or attending community college computer science courses.

Have two long lists at work that need to be cross checked to insure the company is not losing a lot of money. Get printouts every morning at 6 in nice clean text tables.

Ask if I can have the digital copies instead. Am told there are no digital copy, print out is clearly not hand written. Keep asking around, eventually find out there are in fact digital copies, but those are restricted to much higher level employees as the data is considered very sensitive, as is everything here.

Eventually security comes and asks me why I am asking so many questions. I explain I want to setup the computer to compare the two lists for me rather then me doing it for hours everyday when I have no time to do it. They tell me we don't have the technology to do such a thing and to stop day dreaming and get back to work. Also learn it is only printed in hard copies it makes it harder to steal. Alright so I can't just import a softcopy into Excel.

Buy cheap second hand scanner, old Raspberry Pi and a few other things for about ~$300 and setup a machine that scans the papers then digitizes them, then compares the list and emails me any discrepancies all thought the companies internal network.

Big boss comes by to investigate my sudden productivity boom, suspects I cheating or something. Tell him I setup a system to get the computer to compare the lists. He laughs and tells me the tech team is already working on that problem, but it is years from implementation. I show him the unit and note that I am working on a nicer case to house it. He calls security and has them wipe all the data and return the parts to me. Says it was a huge security risk, like I didn't build it to auto wipe and disconnected from the network when not in use. And I was to be disciplined for such a beach of contract.

Turns out HR screwed up and never got me to sign that contact, so I was not disciplined, but had to go back to the old painful way of cross checking the lists.

This is at Fortune 500
>>
>>55455810
Uh, just remake it but only have it work at the speed you're supposed to
>>
>>55455825
If they ever found out I would lose my job, so I don't plan to rebuild it. Also it is kind of bulky and hard to hid in the building, I could maybe hid it if I really tried, but I don't plan to.

Granted the growing list of reprimands for not completing everything on time is also threatening my job.

Which is why I am looking for another job.
>>
>>55455904
Have you considered talking with someone above those fucktards?

The higher the boss, the more they care about shit working properly and the less they care about the people under them. If you can prove to a higher boss that you could boost productivity like that, you might get a new seat.

Worth trying anyways if you´re going to leave
>>
>>55455926
The person who panicked the most was a regional director who answers only to the CEO. He personally drove out to lecture me on how my recklessness could have cost the company everything.

But I did take very strict security measures and the data at my location is so low level that even if it was published it would be hard to use. You would need that data from lots of locations for several weeks before you could build any type of functional competitive model, which is partly why nobody ever knows what is going on here.

So basically the only person I could appeal to is the CEO who works on the opposite side of the country. I not getting that invested given how backwards it is here. Still better then not having a job, man that no income really sucked.
>>
>>55451974
Wrong as well, a hack is making something do something that it wasn't intended to do, it doesn't have to be clever at all.

The security in my setup is decent

1. Plug unit in
2. System starts from physically locked read only SD card which also encrypted without password so even I can't make changes at work
3. Bare minimum OS and programs lunch automatically, also set to ignore all unlisted inputs
4. Papers are scanned and encrypted with a randomly generated method and stored only in RAM in hidden directory under a randomly generated maze of dead end file trees, some of which contain hidden action files to wipe and shutdown if opened
5. The unit then cross checks the data and sends a newly generated encrypted cross check list to a buffer zone specifically designated in RAM which only with listed programs can read OR write to
6. A randomly generated key to decrypted the new cross check list is temporally displayed on the units tiny display for 10 seconds only once and the last 5 static character are omitted, as they are always the same but not listed anywhere in the system
7. The unit is then physically connected to the internal company network by Ethernet cable
8. Encrypted cross check list is sent sent directly to my work email, the path skips the main company sever to speed things up and insure the data never leaves the building by way of the local company sever
9. The unit then is physically disconnected from the network, at which point it automatically does a secure data wipe of the RAM and non-white listed hard drive space. And then shuts down
10. The unit is unplugged
11. I open the email, then use the company provided decryption software to open the cross check list using the key the unit displayed plus the 5 static characters which only I know of as the computer never has that last bit of data in a usable format. I never loaded any other data to the company computer or network.
12. Read and print file, never saved
13. lock and shut down company computer

14. Take all papers and put in binder in unlocked filing cabinet in unlocked room as per company security guidelines

The problem with aspies like you is you can't see the bigger picture because you're hyperfocused on lackeys work. It's likely they keep it the way they do so they can make strategic adjustments and forgeries for financial advantages/mobility within the companies politics.

Be careful what you fuck with. A lot of things in companies like that are broken on purpose and the 'fix' will always be forever pending or 'on the way' with the money being siphoned off elsewhere.

Actually when is started with the company I was originally hired under an assistant regional position because of my training in management and solid mix of big picture and detail skills. But at the last moment they said the person who was going to step down decided to stay and I was offered a secondary position as an assistant facility manager for less pay. Given I had been unemployed for nearly two years since graduation I gladly took it.

As for the idea of maintaining a poor system it does makes sense given your dark outlook, which I had failed to think about given my natural naiveté to most political matters.

Since I have been checking these things I have found the Logistic/Warehouse part of the company has been doing very well as the Storefront/Local been hurting badly. Many cases of incomplete asset transfers add up to a significant amount of this as one part seems to be off loading their problems onto the other. But right now the company is bragging its improvement and overhauling of the Logistic/Warehouse side to increase shareholder profits, these cross check lists show errors on the Logistic/Warehouse side that cost the Storefront/Local a great deal of money. Oddly enough a few years ago it was better Storefront/Local units that was to increase shareholder profits. But overall the whole company has been slowly but surely losing ground which anyone doing a complete picture study would have to notice.

Since I have started hunting for these errors, which everyone it told to look for but never given anytime to actually look for, I have found lots of lots of them. My reviews have dropped sharply since I found a very massive one a few weeks ago. This has improved my facility budget and hurt the warehouse that supplies my location. But that is purely circumstantially at this point, as that is a crazy claim to make. It is ludicrous, like something out of a bad spy novel.

>As for the idea of maintaining a poor system it does makes sense given your dark outlook, which I had failed to think about given my natural naiveté to most political matters.
You'll get in a lot of trouble if you're not careful.

Not only that, but if a modern megacompany boasts it has uncrackable security and the utmost efficiency, it means if anything goes wrong then organizations involved in prosecution can blame them directly as you indirectly take responsibility for any failure by admitting to the quality of your security and processing.

This is why the biggest companies always seem so incompetent - it's an incredibly powerful position to have in court.

Bad spy novels are based on real practices. Don't fuck with anything beyond your strict job description and practice your hobbies at home or with your own small company. There's a reason people are taught in school to read off material instead of experiment.

Incompentence or average performance also provides service jobs for the people who come and provide temporary patches to the leaks of only average effectiveness. One day people like you will work yourself out of your own job. My old man did the same thing with safety work on a nuclear plant - he came up with measures and designs, team structures, service links and even actual construction work that was so effective that they didn't half his staff anymore and eventually not even him.

Keep this in mind, talented people.
>>
>>55457755
Maybe your dad should've patented the measures and procedures or at least become a manager before implementing them
>>
>>55457755
I don't think you saw my other post
>>55457286
I am certainly not the weakest link in the company and I document all my actions in detail.

As for the very real issue of technology replacing workers, I do think about it.
But I am not as personally concerned as the work load they give is unrealistic and I am striving to meet it, not blow it away. I have been a victim of my success far too many times to do that again, partly why getting a job was so hard as everyone thought I was too overqualified or stupid given I have lots of trouble writing stuff so the placement exams make me look nothing like my past exploits.
Also they have such a bad under staffing and turnover rate they would be suicidal to fire me at this time as I am covering for 3 other people who walled off in the last month. Also most of the companies work is the low wage stuff which is complicated to replace, so I have a number of demotion positions I can take to hold me over if required.

I had no idea that I had DDOSED the school's servers, but I don't think it can have been as sever as they put it. I blame the school though, handing out laptops to students and expecting them to know shit, we had no classes in CS or anything.

>>
>>55458850
I avoid best buy as it is never the best buy, expect in rare cases.
Also always get threatened by manager for starting trouble.

The dude was trying to sell some old lady an SD card that was much more expensive then what she needed as her camera as it could not support the new speeds.

It's like selling a USB 3.0 drive to a person who has only USB 2.0 and doesn't plan to upgrade in the next several years. Not only does that do a disservice to that customer, but it means when I want to buy the new stuff they have sold out to other people who can't even use the tech.

I check both company policy and state and federal rules, there was no compliance failure. The information never left company property, was never unsecured, not used for ill gains, or jeopardized the companies image or interest.

My security measures exceeded that of all current company requirements. So one would have very hard time claiming security issues, as the rule is "meets or exceeds" not "strictly follows" as I think many of them never bother to actually read the wording. They asked for 128 bit protection I used 256 bit protection, is anyone going to build a case that 128 is more secure then 256?

My minor was in business law, the guidelines were very interesting reading. They was some ambiguity of making copies, which is the only area one could make a decent argument, but it was done in the interest of the company and was not in direct violation with any other rules so it could not be conclusively shown that I violated it as the wording is ambiguous.

>>55461007
That was the original plan.

Just import the data, covert, drop in excel, execute macro, done. Cost $0 + ~3 hours, given that I spend 2 or 3 hours a day doing this every day it really adds up to automate it.

Setting up the image recognition system was a big extra step, thankfully the from layout was constant so I could manually per-set fields, else I doubt I could have figured it out without making it a full scale job.

>Show him how to chance privacy, change it for him
>he clicks on his own profile
>"but it still show information about self. See? Picture? And information?"
>"that's because its your own profile. It only looks like that because you are looking at your own, if I looked at your profile it wouldnt show all of that"
>"you cant see? Its there" points at screen
He thought i meant that i couldnt see the same information he could even though we were looking at the same screen. Eventually just had to log in to my facebook, find his profile then show him it didn't show me all his details.

Same guy:
>"I get too many email. Cant find ones i want"
>ok i can help with that, probably gets a load of spam and hasn't filtered it or something
>look at inbox, its mostly twitter notifications saying that the accounts he follows have posted x y z things
>most of what he follows is shit like "daily sexy beyonce photos"
>"Uh sir most of this is twitter notifications, do you have twitter?"
>"no"
>eh. click on the emails and unsubscribe from notifications.
>Once all that has gone its stuff from 'adult dating' sites
>he's not phased that im having to go through all of these emails about "sexy local girls" and shit

The first time i met him he was googling "kate middleton topless photos". Its not subtle at all, we have curved row of PCs and you can see what everyone is doing. I am the only one he will let help him too, which the other volunteers find quite funny. Even if im busy and he asks for help, if someone else goes over to him he says "no, her" then ignores them til they leave.
>>
>>55472073
With regards to OPs question though, if you want to reduce tech illiteracy most community centres, libraries (my class is at a library), youth centres, and some places like old peoples homes will have computer/technology classes where they could probably use help from volunteers. They also sometimes need old laptops or PCs that are still in good condition, if you have anything hanging about that you don't use.

I know its only doing it on a small scale, but it makes a pretty big difference for the people who go there if they can get skype to call their family or learn how to apply for jobs online and stuff. I enjoy it, its a pretty comfy evening too because its never anything complicated that they want help with and everyones been really nice. Old people are pretty chill if you're a bit autistic too, they're a good confidence builder.

I know I'm replying to a post a day old but whatever.

You put unauthorized hardware on the network. Immediately that is a violation of (any reasonable) protocol as the administrators have no control over this new system and thus cannot mitigate any vulnerabilities on it. You should consider yourself lucky they returned your hardware, if I had been on that security team I would have had it destroyed just in case.

You're an idiot and know nothing about network security, should feel bad, and should shut up and listen to your security team.

Why do people keep saying this?

I fully understand the idea that an additional unknown device is a possible threat vector. I have seen these horror stories happen.

However I also know that the unit I built was several times more secure then anything on that network. >>55457286
The company security protocols are a joke.

You know what the system does if you don't update your account with a new password after the 30 day window? It makes the account have no password at all and the first person to type in the user name, (which is very easy to find) gets to set the new password without any verification. I told them about this months ago, they are still looking into it. I literally miss-typed a single character once and was asked to set my regional directors new password, as he was on vacation and had not updated it the time window given.

Also they failed to properly delete my the data on my unit as I found it still in the trash bin. And I was the guy who taught my boss to put letter and numbers in the passwords, apparently a new idea for about half of the employees here.

Some people are just better off not knowing.
I'm all for free knowledge, but if someone is handed this shit down for free without their own effort, they'll take it for granted and they'll use it to put others down.

I mean fuck, I've worked at Fry's and the number of idiots that come in thinking they know even the most base shit when they clearly don't is astounding.

It definitely varies per distro. The only universal "power this shit off now" keycombo I've seen in Linux is Alt+Printscreen+O (or B for reboot)

I had something like this happen over a script (net send). They were trying to get me suspended.
The idiotic IT tech tried to call it a virus, but I was adamant to the dean that the tech was retarded and that no one on earth would call it a virus. Told him over and over to "read the fucking script".

Didn't get suspended. Didn't even get my computer access taken away. Just don't be a bitch.

i'm a noob. Just got this from a Russian thingy some time ago, that's all. I'm an idiot trying to learn.

Zeus botnet translated. It's the 2009 version though. I know fuck all about programming. I asked some bloke on the dark net and he told me to start programming with APL, but I made the switch to linux and I can't load the right key board font even though terminal brings up apl fairly easily. Then some other bloke said to try A+ instead because it accepts the ASCII stuff and the European layout. But every A+ is about emacs and cancer. I kid you not, no A+ tutorials worth mentioning. They told me APL and A+ allows you to try cooler shit because you're allowed to do more stuff. Then they told me to move onto C but only after I got A+ or APL. I tell them that the zeus translation is in c++, c and php for the command and control bits, and that i'd need a copy of windows server 2010. Not server, the windows thing you use to write c++, the thing that has c#. I have mono of course but fuck if i know how to use it.

You don't get it, do you? For many large companies, things are broken and stay broken, because nobody gives a shit. The higher ups know that with the way things currently are, they make $x amount of dollars. If things start changing, then they may make less or may even get replaced by someone younger than them.

It's your dumbass fault for trying to access documents you didn't have clearance for. You're really fucking autistic if you think they had no good reason to be pissed at you. "Hey, I'll just disregard their reasoning for keeping the digital copies out of hands like mine! Huh, I wonder why they got mad?"
>>
>>55480978
Not him but wheres the difference between having the information on paper vs having them as a computer file in terms of clearance? I can't see the discrepancy here
>>
>>55473931
Oh man, my school district had OSX machines when those started coming out, and there were those of us storing like, massive amounts of games on there and some, not myself, charging for access to their drive. And there were all the times others and I tried breaking through their protective measures to run non-whitelisted programs by modifying the hell out of the Info.plist file inside the app... they wisened up after about three months of me running multiple copies of iTunes from different folders, or inside other application packages.

All my stories are from my family.

>be family tech support because I'm the only one who isn't completely retarded when it comes to computers or following directions that are printed clearly on paper
>recently young brother gets new $800 tablet after his last $600 one and Xbone
>apparently has zero idea how to fucking not get it infected with aids, because 2 days after he's bitching that it doesn't work and that it's slow and Microsoft is sending him messages
>it's more infested than a rundown crackhouse in downtown detroit
>do everything I can to clean it up and make it as absolutely retard proof as I can
>write directions on what to do, how to run scans and everything else
>two days later he's complaining that it doesn't work again
>he managed to shut down all the protective measures I put in place while still being unable to fix the shit himself
>get call last weekend that I need to speed over there and fix it right the fuck now
>really busy so I tell them I can't and tell them to either follow the directions I gave them or go get ripped off by a store
>call me selfish and tell me not to come by on 4th of July
>go out to a friend's barbecue instead and don't have to deal with retardation for a few brief hours before they call me again and beg me to help

I honestly think that we need to have literacy and competency tests before people are allowed to even fucking touch computers. I also have retarded stories from work, but those are English and writing based rather than tech.

>Connection lost attempting to reconnect...
>attempting to reconnect... attempting to reconnect... attempting to reconnect...
>Ctrl+c does nothing, there is no timeout, stuck in a loop
>ask online how to force quit a telnet session on a Cisco router
>get called an idiot for not knowing I need to press Ctrl+Shift+6+X, quickly type disconnect then press Ctrl+c

The digital copies have permissions set to only allow higher-ups or the dept that puts them together has access to them. When he accessed them anyway, that was a clear breach of security #1. Even if he didn't have any malicious intent, it really doesn't matter, because his higher-ups don't know that. It's not like he went over this with his boss or anything. Nope. He just decided it'd be a good idea to bring his own hardware in and write his own scripts, which without having someone who can tell you exactly what's happening, they have no idea if he's bringing in a rogue access point, or some sort of malicious system. The guy is a literal autist for thinking he didn't breach security, meanwhile praising his work that he wasn't asked to do. If I was his boss, he'd be fired.
>>
>>55481333
>When he accessed them anyway
Except he didn't. He only accessed the copies that were given to him for processing.
Machine reading printed copies does not magically make them into the original files.

Its like pulling a level to kill one instead of leaving it alone to kill 5. Whatever happens to those 5 people are not your fault or problem but that one WIll be. Shit can happen. No matter how secure and unlkely, if it happens, the company has to cover for something it didnt have control over that you intentionally did. Stupid or not, its something that you needed to check with them on or just never said anything in the first place instead of trying to be an over achiever cause the fault will be entirely on YOU without a golden parachute.
