I saw your post on reddit
>>
I've honestly been thinking of developing a text-board software similar to futaba, or I guess more appropriately after the design seen in Steins;gate's atchannel. (still looking into the legalese of image-boards.)

Also been considering a sort of experiment
inf-chan is shit because you have, like a million, porn boards that never get a single visitor afterwards. 4chan suffers from generals even outside of generals boards (/g/ being one of them.)

So my experimental idea is to allow user created boards but they expire after a certain time-frame without a post (days). The more posts/unique visitors per day the board gets the longer the expiration timer (weeks) and after a certain number unique visitors/day, the expiration timer is basically background noise (months/years.)

Another is the idea of doing away with threads. Having boards basically be giant discussions (however I don't know how popular this idea would be. Nor would I know how to properly implement s/age to this style of board.)
>>
>>55435365
You could have each board be one giant discussion and then add ability to filter messages by channel

What exactly do you mean by channel?

>>
>>55435413
Parroting language to the point of beating it to death. Anybody with a unique way of talking is shouted down or told to go to reddit until they pepper their posts with faggot, nigger to fit in.

Tendency for the audience to be underage. Hundreds of people miraculously always "freshly turned 18" when in reality they're 12. This only affects places like /v/ or /b/ badly but is also a problem on /g/ graphics card threads.

A crab mentality of trying to keep everyone down as the same autistic loser stereotype. If you try to do something for the community or a general you encounter huge resistance at every turn.

A massive amount of spoonfeeding and sauce posting ruins every single board by entry level casuals who refuse to lurk or learn on their own.

Pointlessly negative criticism of literally everything to an unhelpful extreme and contrarian tendencies but this comes from a lot of people being in their teens here.

4+4chan if you don't mind /pol/acks completely derailing threads with complaints about people invading their safe space at the slightest hint of someone having a different political opinion.

I think that's a problem though. As this kind of place was MADE for discussion. 2ch was created as an experiment to see how opinions would be taken if everyone was anonymous. 2ch evolved into Futaba. Which gave inspiration for 4chan... It was literally BORN with discussion in mind.

It was only after the news and normies started talking about "that anonymous hacker board 4chan" that shit really started to get stupid. Think about it, before then the random board was quite literally a place where aside from trying to get one another horny, you just tried to show one another the grossest shit possible, or share something hilarious. Random gave rise to some great and some not so great internet 'memes'.

What was the last 'meme' that came out of 4chan that was actually OC and actually good? 'Memes' used to actually be the word for internet in-jokes.. You had to be in on the culture and site to get the joke... Todays 'memes' are fucking retarded. Because 8 year olds go around spouting them out of context.
>>
Hell, the word 'meme' is a fucking shit 'meme' on itself these days.

'memes' used to be funny, contextual, and actually have a 'story' to how it came about... Now even /pol/ is reduced to talking like niggers, calling each other cuckolds, and frog-posting.

The last thing 4chan did right? Enacting that shitty word filter desu. Because when /pol/ talks like fucking niggers... There's something wrong.

They are as incapable as 4chan when it comes to content creation. It's not like everyone contributes here either. The difference is reddit is more popular so it gets a larger crowd who are just watching and commenting which inevitably makes everyone who use the site look bad. There is literally nothing wrong with reddit itself. Just create your niche board and you have your peace but it'll be less entertaining.

Depends where you draw the line between autism and actually funny. I wish I could even remember 'memes' from'the good old days'. I just have a vague recollection of what it was like then. Simply because things move so fast.

Culture does change, and humour over time evolves and changes too. However the 4chan I lurked and sometimes posted in before, is definitely not the same 4chan I lurk and rarely post in today. Humour has regressed down to just posting images for 'instant lulz I'm a kool kid now r-righht?'

I guess if you're 8 (and underage) it's all the stupid frog posting that was the last meme... If you're actually 18? It was probably relating to cats, Momiji, '404 girl' as normies would love to call Yotsuba...

Hell I'll even give 4chan a cookie for making Hiro-tan. As at least an ounce of thought went into making the character, since they needed a replacement for mooty-kinz.

>>55435890
Of course it's incredibly white to be saying senpai, on fleek, lit right now. By the time whites get hold of these black phrases and start using them they've already become stale memes to actual niggers. Nigger culture is like 4chan watching Pepe turn into Sad Frog but on a massive scale.

Reddit does not create much original content, or rather, they don't create any. It is inherently this way as the main concept is the linking to other pages. This makes the community more based on being impressionable to the content that is presented to them, rather than internally creating content that is spread from user to user internally. But these factors are in fact, inherent to the websites. Reddit focuses on attempting to present content from an outside source, while 4chan was based on creating unique, memorable, or provocative content that is repeated by users, long after the original post has been long pruned from the servers. Also the ability to stay anonymous has even extended this "desire" to present memorable content.

>>
>>55435989
That is true for the front page and popular boards. That simply is not true for interest boards of reddit. Take /banishedporn subreddit for example. They produce much more original content than similar 4chan thread (I've not been there lately so subreddit may have been dead). What I'm getting at is that when the interest is the reason something exists original content comes by itself. I can just say that half of /g is just linking technology websites and it would reach the same conclusion as your post with websites turned around. It's the interests that create the oringality.

>with websites turned around
I do not understand.
But the origin of your argument derives from a fallacy. You are saying that there are more obscure heavily focalized subreddits that produce interesting content, and then are attempting to say that this entire website does not act like these obscure subreddits. That just is not logical. Here is another difference between the two websites. 4chan exists as a limited number of "interest" boards that contain threads that pertain to a specific topic or interest. There are also generals that can represent a certain grouping for an interest (a specific video game or even mechanical keyboards). Threads naturally formulate these communities. On Reddit you can make as many obscure subreddits as you want, but this is swimming upstream against the majority. Reddit is designed with sharing to a mass audience in mind. Creating tight knit groups is an aspect, but it deviates from the core of the purpose of the site.
>>
>>55435796
It really was better that way.
>>
>>55436132
And aren't you elitist by calling the majority of other Reddit users retarded, bud?
>>
>>55434585
Reddit is the normie version of imageboards. The problems experienced by larger chans (mootchan, and cripplechan), is just the same on default subreddits. The lack of creativity, shitposting, and inherent laziness of posters. Smaller subreddits, and smaller chans that have niche interest meanwhile have creative, and quality discussion. Also they are comfy as fuck. The only problem on them is that they are slow.
>>
>>55436084
>>55436222
And i'm not going to act naive and appear to be spouting that 4chan is the goldmine of the internet. But by the very nature of the website, it has gone on to sprout countless ideas, icons, and sayings that have influenced the internet. It has become an assimilation of thoughts, to the point that there is the term "chan culture", reserved for these ideas. It is ignorant to deny that 4chan has had an impact on the internet. And let's be frank, Reddit has a 4chan section, while this discussion started with 4chan users attempting to push Reddit away.

... Can anyone ever leave 4chan? I'd love to... hence why I'm considering making my own experimental board... However until I understand the legalese regarding imageboards... It's still in the "is it a textboard or Imageboard" phase of developement... (I'm not going to jail just because some asshole thought it would be funny to post their CP... And I don't have the funds to keep a team of lawyers around.)

That being said, I rarely post anymore because of the state of boards... If there's a decent discussion I know something about, I may chime my 2 cents in... However it's a needle in a giant hay-stack looking for good discussions throughout the boards...

Which is one reason I'm hesitant to start my own. The internet at large just doesn't have the same attention span as it used to have... So where people were happy just posting on BBS that was just a different community around the same topics as another BBS...

People want Cheap lulz... So they'll just goto 4chan... Boards like 7/11 chan, inf-chan, (weed)chan, etc typically had to have a gimmick that made them popular (inf-chan and the fact anyone can create a board for example.) however ultimately a lot of these boards failed because their gimmick wasn't properly thought out (inf-chan having a thousand porn boards for the same fetish or with slight differences.)

So in making a new board... It's about finding a gimmick that won't end up being your own Achilles Hill...

IMHO, the reason why an imagboard fail is because the reason of their existence is usually negative in nature. For example, 7chan, and wheelchairchan is a anti-4chan. 420chan,meanwhile is focused on drugs, and wrestling. They are the largest AFAIK. Smaller chans like sushichan, and uboachan is surviving because of having a confederation of sorts with lainchan.

I can honestly see that being a reason. Anything brought about by "we hate this group, so we're going to be our own sekret club" has more of a chance of failing.

I guess it would be a combination of things that get things going. 420chan's drug focus is almost as much a gimmick to me as inf-chans "infinitely expanding" board system.

Another thing is I get the feeling a text-board wouldn't be popular except to those niche fans who wish they spoke Japanese so they could be on 2ch... Which is why running an imageboard is arguably better... It's just a combination of making sure to only discourage stupid unproductive behavior like >>55436731 here so kindly demonstrated... While also not being so strict that no one is having fun browsing the site...

This way it's brought more as a rule, rather than a "We hate 4chan, no 4channers allowed :<" while also having hopefully something unique (either design or format/functionality) that draws people to it initially.

Usenet has a bunch of technical groups. They're not as active as 10 years ago, but people still post regularly on alt.os.linux.slackware and various other groups.
I guess the biggest problem is that a lot of ISPs have dropped Usenet entirely. But if yours has it, it's an option. Or you can use a 3rd party Usenet provider. One such option is the Super Dimentional Fortress (they have a lot more than just Usenet too).

so, nothing? I still come here from time to time, but you have to
admit there's not really quality content here.

I personally visit only for the battlestation threads, and
occasionally read through the dpt only to realize, time after time,
that no one actually knows anything, or just aren't here for
discussion, just shitty oneliners and "how do I do X"

"Capitalism" as observed by Carl Marx is how the world has worked since forever. So long as human greed exists there is no getting rid of it or variants of it.

/csg/ is one huge /g/ OC with beautiful custom art, fresh memes, and nothing comparable on reddit. They even have a surprisingly good podcast. One day normies will catch on to the beauty of buying from China but for now it's truly beautiful.

For tech (hell, for almost anything), Reddit is actually an awful community to do anything but lurk in and even then, not for too long. Their wikis have some nice compiled resources (much better than the InstallGentoo wiki) and the DailyProgrammer board is honestly very nice. Past that, they're too infested with retards who simply want to get in on the tech bubble before it bursts begging for jobs and holier-than-thou """veterans""", not to mention the karma system's effect on posting. There's nothing really there for sincere posters, since most of the tech boards there seem to only cater to the extremes I listed.

Wheelchairchan as a whole is too deeply invested in politics and the 5 Guys Incident to have any proper tech discussion; there isn't much difference between there and here, honestly. It's filled with /v/irgins and /pol/ kiddies talking about "falling for memes," calling things "botnets," screaming "SHILL" and making loaded posts that are superficially related/unrelated to technology. Their sticky is vastly inferior to another certain imageboard's sticky, mainly due to the community.

Want a private community? You're gonna have to make some friends or engage in some intense searching.

As a Redditor form day 1, I have a generic insight into the posting structure on 4chan. For example their capitalisitc views, which are the root of all evil BTW.

If you "faggots" (as you call yourselves) could just see the glory of YouTube bloggers, 4Chan wouldn't be such a damn cesspit.

8gag /tech/ feels like what would happen if the FSF memesters got the /prog/ board they keep whining about, it's dead as fuck, superficially better on a catalog level (consumerist shit is contained to one rolling sticky for example) but in the end it replaces 12 year olds crying about framerates and meming about GPUs with pretentious CS undergrads bikeshedding and meming about software licensing.

Funny enough, Wheelchairchan has its own /prog/ board for programming that, when it receives traffic, is substantially better than /tech/. However, as you might imagine, it doesn't receive a whole lot of traffic.

Part of this site's appeal is its fast pace though, and the "fast = shit" rule doesn't really have to apply, the only reason it's a thing now is because there's no useful moderation and nobody knows how to report, sage and hide anymore.

>bring up politics that isn't related to technology
Most people dont care if you browse reddit, but when you derail threads with shitty psuedo-intellectual garbage that looks like a reddit post, that's when people get upset. your post is a perfect example of redditposting because it contributes nothing, reeks of being smug because of a political standpoint in a non-politics related thread, and is passively agressive. Youre the reason people like us who enjoy talking about technology look for other forums
