Is it time to upgrade to 10?

Im still running Windows 7 and love it but the free upgrade is going to expire soon and i dont want to be left out on "security updates" and more importantly, Xbone Anywhere games like Forza Horizon.

I tried windows 10 about half a year ago and wasnt a fan. Am I just being a prude? Has it gotten better?
>>
>>55425914
It will only get worse. Don't give up your human rights for this garbage.

I love how wintards always pretend 8, 7 or even XP are safer then 10. It's been fucked from the start, Mircosoft is just now raping you without drugging you.

Is 10 actually lightweight/lighter than 7 or is that just a meme?
>>
>>55425914
Win7 is supported through 2020 (at least). that's plenty of time to learn how to use linux, so you can safely distance yourself from the windows platform all together (or at the very least, only use it in vm form, so you only give M$ info about your gaming habits, not about your internet habits)
>>
>>55425914
you better hurry up Pajeet, you don't want to miss out this awesome yet free upgrade
>>
>>55426101
Where in my post did I suggest eliminating the constitution?

Does this mean its only "suggested" that you have it in order to play upcoming "Windows 10" games like Forza Horizon?
>>
>>55425914
>I tried windows 10 about half a year ago and wasnt a fan. Am I just being a prude? Has it gotten better?
No. It's still the same pile of shit as always.

Why would you downgrade to 10?
>>
>>55426310
Not really. We are talking very miniscular differences. Barely noticeable.
>>

not OP but the only reason that comes to mind is slightly more vidya.

Dx12.

Aside from that there's no reason though, no new useful features and enhanced botnet.

No, it's tied to that serial. Meaning you can't be running that 8 and 10 at the same time

The only issue with Windows 10s new botnet.

You can disable it with disablewintracking, spybot Anti Beacon, and peer block.

In fact, these blocking methods are so effective the OS is less of a botnet than Windows 7 stock.

10 fucked up some of my older programs, my power profiles, my laptop's sleep, etc.
So I just "upgraded" to 8.1.
No problems since then.

Again, Windows 10 LTSB sounds great, but you need VL for that.
>>
There is only one time I told someone to downgrade to 7, and it was because they had old unsupported hardware that caused crashes only on Windows 10

So yes for the love of our lord and savior Christ almighty who is sitting at the right hand of God, UPGRADE!

Would you still be using Windows XP? or 98? or 95? No, because they're old, and soon will not be supported, so obviously you have to upgrade!

>but botnet
Well, we both know that's a meme, and if it really had a botnet, it would be already present in Windows 7, but I'm not going to argue with you over this. The less crazy people we have in the Windows 10 "community" the better desu

There's no reason not to use the free downgrade to secure your digital entitlement. You can then upgrade back to 7 or 8.1 immediately. This way you have a legit Windows 10 license to use in the unlikely scenario 10 becomes enjoyable to use in future.

Windows 10 comes with Onedrive built in. It cannot be uninstalled. Every now and then I'll see that my drive is completely out of space. Typically I restart and it's back to like 200gb of 500gb solid state on my OS drive. Today it's got 2gb remaining and I get a space warning. I check for what's eating the space. Clear all temporary files and only free up 14gb. So I start right clicking folders. Which led me to this. Fucking Onedrive created 1,331,945 fucking 1,025kb log files. Now it's so fucked that the program won't even open to try and figure out what setting would even create something like this. FUCK OFF WITH THIS BULLSHIT ONEDRIVE. I've never used it or changed any settings. It just freaked the fuck out.
>>
>>55426310
windows processes are more lightweight--that does not mean windows will run better on your machine. The minimum requirements are still higher, and at my workplace one of the current issues my colleague is dealing with is that the PCs with Windows 10 are taking twice as long to complete Sencha builds (literally twice as long).
>>
Are we all forgetting that a lot of this stuff can be turned off (but you'll have to go full autism mode because it will take a few hours)?

Not that it's relevant: if you weren't going to upgrade otherwise, then don't now. Microsoft is going to postpone the expiration date on their free trial. Windows 7 is still viable in 99% of workplaces, which means 2 things: They definitely wont start charging so soon, and you don't need to upgrade anyways.

For me personally, once big name games start coming out with only Windows 10+ support, that's when I'll upgrade, even if that comes at a point in time when Windows costs money.
>>
>>55432470
No idea what you did wrong ; I've signed in with a Microsoft account even and never had this problem. Onedrive isn't even active on mine

Testing on my secondary PC, using a brand new, fresh 7 and 10 install.

Less RAM usage, about 30% less on 10
The install OS size is nearly half of 7
Proper UEFI Ultra-Fast support also means it boots about 6x faster than 7

It's alright, but nothing ground breaking. The amount of tweaking you need to do to get rid of all the bloated shit everywhere is annoying as hell.

Fresh installed W10 on my old core 2 duo which I overclocked recently and it works as good as W7 from a casual point of view (as if I'd use Windows for work, kek). Basically the Xbox integration is a plus, good support for Xbox One controller (although the suckers announced a bluetooth enabled one), I disabled everything relating to sending data to MS and didn't even bother with an antivirus. Considering I have uBlock Origin it blocks most of the stuff I could accidentally click on. The gaming bar needs to be turned off to make Steam big picture hub work. Other than that it's working fine, I especially like the memory compression feature since it's a old computer with 3Gb of usable RAM (fucking mobo blocks at 3Gb even though there's 4Gb in it, nothing I can do).

tl;dr: It's okay, W7 is getting old, it's time for W10 just so that all new software expect this version. Of course, for actual work there's GNU/Linux.

for some reason the install has taken 6 hours and is using all my memory

whyy

That's the botnet doing a first time start up install

Enjoy your free "upgrade"
>>
>>55438551
The spying can't be stopped on any consumer version of it.
>>
>>55438774
Not to mention all attempts to stop botnet are futile considering what Intel and AMD have placed in their CPUs.

>>
>>55438774
Except it can be stopped on Pro, which is a consumer version, as the group policies don't stop you from setting enterprise values.
>>
>>55426310
Meme. It's much slower than windows 7 in my experience. They say it uses less memory when all it is really doing is compressing memory, which firther slows shit down and causes hang ups. It is a especially bad if you have a program that has a memory leak, especially since the programs own work around will conflict with that shit.

Enough people do to the point that libreboot exists. XP can't even escape, it started with Windows 95.

You will have to make clean install anyway, "upgrade" usually results in rather crappy working system. I have "Pro" version at work on new PC we got some time ago and I could spot the difference.

If you are not sure, if you want it, just run "upgrade" and roll back right away. Your key will stay updated and you will be able to install both Win 7 adn Win 10 from it in the future, without to worry about this "free upgrade" deadline.

If you do, however, want to use Win 10, reserve like few hours to tweak it - tons of settings are hidden in Group Policy editor. For more info what to disable and what not to:

technet.microsoft.com/en-us/itpro/windows/manage/manage-connections-from-windows-operating-system-components-to-microsoft-services

Keep in mind that you cant officially disable everything on non-Enterprise version. Also, Home dont have access to Group Policy editor, so avoid it.

A small bonus: some people claim that you can easy disable telemetry component by editing registry. This is only partially true, as Group Policy settings override registry settings. In other words, even if you place that dword "allowtelemetry" at 0 and your GP still have undefined related setting or set it at 1 (basically, setting at 0 on non-Enterprise is equal to 1) it will still be 1, aka "basic", not "security".

With that in mind, think over and do what fits you. Its your own operating system and your own PC, after all. Win10 fits your needs? Go for it. Like Linux Mint approach? Just use it. Feeling that Arch is better for you? Fuck the memes, just use it.

Dont make /g/ decide what you use. You are not a baby.
Or are you?
>>
>>55438864
That was from an update, and can be prevented if you manage your updates. Even if you don't, whilst the Telemetry setting is a blanket setting, it does not override the settings of members of its subgroup - which do not in turn require enterprise. So you do have to trawl manually, but it's still doable on pro. A bit of effort + wireshark will show you that it works.

You don't need to clean install, just upgrade and refresh your windows in setting
>>
>>55438955
Upgrades bugger up quite a few configurations. Better to upgrade to get the windows 10 key, then deactive/roll back and do a fresh install.

I have 8.1, don't ask why. Should I just update for DX12, I mainly play vidya

You can upgrade to get the code and if you don't like it just use your backup you made before.

Guys I need to know something and googling this doesn't give clear answers.

I clean installed Win10 a few months ago on a new machine using an OEM key. I currently need to do a clean reinstall of Windows on this same machine. If I do this, will I lose my OEM key?

I love videogames, but further sacrificing privacy for it is a no go. Don't be like the average gamer that is only after self fulfillment no matter what the cost. I got good and installed Linux, then I setup a Windows 10 KVM with my 290 who's only purpose is to gayme.

By license you are NOT allowed to move it. In practice all that means that if next automated activation methods don't work the person you have to call won't help you

It'll probably work. I havent so far come across an oem licence which havent worked eventually at least after a phone call and I've activated around 100 win licences
>>

That doesn't have a clear and standard definition. They can call any number of things a "basic amount"
