If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Does anyone know anything about smartcards?

I was hoping to get the express card slot reader working in my Thinkpad (gemalto) but I think I might have bought the wrong cards (SLE4442 Secure Memory) as I can not get them to be read. For some reason, opensc keeps throwing an unresponsive card error.

What are the right type of smartcards to buy if you want to program them yourself? The documentation on these standards is pretty obscure

Tried to fix wobbly hinges on my T400 today.
After reassembling the display it wouldn't turn on at all (the power does).
When I removed the display frame and adjusted it it turned on again normally.

After I put the display frame back on the computer would power on on power cord (I don't have a battery yet) for a moment and then shut down with a popping sound from indicator light bar on display next to lenovo logo.

I have to reseat the power cord on laptop to have it display the power plug light again.

Have I fucked up my laptop?
>>
>>55399568
I'm assuming you took the display bezel off and unplugged the inverter power cable. If so, it's possible you blew the backlight fuse plugging in the power cable backwards to the inverter since it's 2-prong and fits both ways.

Might have nothing to do with it. Try the button trick. Unplug power, push power button for 1 sec 10 times, on 10th, hold for 30 seconds. Plug AC cord back in and try to boot normally.

Hey guys, I asked in the Friendly GNU/Linux thread but no one has answered, so I figured I'd ask here.

Me and a relative both own T420 thinkpads. His is acting up, and we think it might be his hard drive. So I offered him to try booting off of my HDD to see if everything ran well or if his stuttering problems persisted.

But when we tried booting his laptop off of my HDD (plugged into his original HDD's slot), the boot select screen would just keep popping up instantly instead of booting into the drive's Debian installation. I was under the impression that Linux installations could be booted from from pretty much any computer, interchangeably.

Why might this be happening? And how can I get it to boot off of my HDD?

If it matters, both computers are using UEFI.
>>
>>55402163
If you're concerned about future prospects of having to pare down to one device and/or be on the move, a laptop in general is a good choice. And of laptops, a thinkpad or other business-class device will be more durable.
>>
>>55403003
hi, i'm not a thinkpad user but i guess you should check how your drive is identified on the other computer and how the reference is written on the fstab or the grub config file. It's just a hunch but if you're not using UUIDs maybe your devices has a different letter, for example instead of being sda is sdb. Also i don't know if on the other computer it generates the same UUID in case you're using UUIDs.

To respond your question, yes, for me changing hard drives has worked flawlessly most of the time, that's why it's a bit strange for me to hear it's not working for you.

In the most extreme case try to chroot to your system installed in the hard drive from a live media (i don't know if debian has one) and try to update the grub configuration and check your fstab.

Hope this helps a bit.
>>
>>55403135

>>
>>55403157
I would say Thinkpad power manager or reducing the processor power but that's sacrificing power for battery life. Installing a linux distro might give you more hours than windows.

Up until win 8/10, I'd say Windows was more optimized for power because of competent driver devs.

I dual-booted my x230 for a short while and until I turned it off, the CPU went fucking nuts during idle because by DEFAULT there's some dumbass indexing/"""optimization""" (on a bare, new install) scheduled task that goes on in the background. Just steadily running down my battery life and running temps up unnecessarily.

Now I get about the same battery between Debian (with TLP) and my previously decucked Win8.
>>
>>55403519

There's two versions of the X220. The standard X220(the one you posted) and a tablet version called X220 Tablet(X220t). the only problem with the tablets are their short battery life and the lack of accuracy at the edges.
>>
>>55403661
The reason to prefer the x220 is their IPS display, however some sellers don't say if the screen is indeed an IPS panel. You have to ask them if the laptop uses IPS, and if they "don't know what you're talking about", ask them to look the screen from different angles and checking if the colors change.

The right arrow key on my dad's T420 isn't working. Apparently it never did since I bought it used like a year ago, and he didn't notice until now.

How can I diagnose it? Is it likely just a keyboard failure or could it be deeper than that?

All the other keys work.

Need help.
Bought a T420s 1 year ago and when I try to boot windows (from its ide non-ssd drive) the loading freezes 90% of the time. Reinstalled etc. but this still keeps happening. I have to spend 15 minutes trying to start my laptop, and I only hibernate it afterwards (which works well). Any idea what illness is there?
>>

Have you checked for defective ram?
If not check with memtest86.

What's strange is if it starts once (after 10 hangs) everything is fine, and if I hibernate it then it always starts.
But once my battery drops below critical or I have to restart it, it's freeze-hell again.

I'm stuck between 3 laptops, to buy.
A ThinkPad T440 (ÂŁ240), a Dell Latitude E7440 (ÂŁ269), and a HP Elitebook 820 G2 (ÂŁ239)

They're all in fine condition.

T440 needs a backlit keyboard, an SSD, and a 1080p screen.

E7440 needs only an SSD and 4 more GB of RAM

and the 820 G2 needs a backlit keyboard, and a 1080p screen.

This is killing me, help.
>>
>>55409158
I'd favor the Latitude over the Elitebook over the Thinkpad, between those three models. The T440 is one of the worst Thinkpads ever made and with the additional parts you need for it, it would end up being the most expensive of the three, so it's definitely out of the question. Coming down to the Latitude or Elitebook, the Latitude has a middle trackpoint button and it looks like the keys aren't chiclet. Getting an SSD and 4GB of RAM are no trouble at all, whereas you could be paying quite a bit or waiting some time for a backlit keyboard and 1080p screen for that Elitebook.
>>
>>55409262
Thanks for the input, and I've just remembered I already have a 240GB SSD I can use it in, and probably have another 4GB DIMM somewhere.

So yeah the E7440 is probably the best bet. And also warranty until 2018.

Just bought a T430, it came with 8gb, a 128gb ssd, the i5 3320, 1366x768 screen.

Is the performance boost from replacing thermal paste and cpu worth it?

I don't know if I should just get a new SSD and call it a day, or if I should go all out and put in a 1600x900 panel and an i7 as well.
>>
>>55409385
Replacing thermal paste is a smart thing to do. Dualcore i7s aren't worthwhile and the T430 wasn't designed to take a quadcore. Stock screen is garbage either way, do the Alienware panel swap if you want something better. You'll also have to pick up an HD+ LCD cable if you want the higher resolution.

I believe that's the correct screen you want. Since your model came with 1366x768, you don't have the right cable for a 1600x900 panel. Check Lenovo's support page for the FRU of the cable you need.

3 - CPU that is cooler running than a Core2

Why the trackpad swap? My X200s doesnt even have a trackpad, I use a wireless mouse 99% of the time
>>
>>55410601
X201s is quite rare, it's no surprise that you can't find any. You generally have to spend weeks or even months hunting for such rare Thinkpads.

The X240 has no physical trackpoint buttons because Lelnovo is fucking retarded. They got so much backlash for it that they brought the physical buttons back in the X250, but as part of the trackpad rather than the keyboard as it was in the --30 generation and prior. You can swap that trackpad back into the X240 to make it a usable computer again.
>>
>>55410694
That does sound like the trackpad is lame, but I dont think it would bother me so much as even on the go I bring my wireless mouse.

What does look like it would bother is that it seems to be unfriendly to take apart, same for the X250.

Are there a reasonably simple 1600x900+ screen swaps for the X220 or X230?

I wish I bought an X201s mainboard when they were readily available less than a year ago.

I'm getting awful Wifi performance on my T420. It has the Centrino Advanced-N 6205. My router is a Netgear WNDR4300 running dd-wrt v24-sp2.

The thinkpad is down in my garage. I recently switched both the router and my Thinkpad to auto-select (turbo 20/40, 2.4 vs 5 GHz, whatever I could find). I often have three out of five bars signal showing, but it will occasionally drop down to one or two.

Sometimes I'll wake the laptop up and sites will load great, then suddenly stop working. I'll do a ping and get dropped packets, or response times in the 1,000+ millisecond range.

None of my other devices seem to have any trouble. A Nexus tablet, Nexus phone, a Microsoft phone (what a POS), etc. Just the Thinkpad.

I'm running Windows 8.1. inb4 any Linux suggestion, no thanks, not on this machine.

>Why are there almost no reviews/videos about the T460p?

Probably because of this:

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2466715

>The T460p casing is basically a slightly thicker T460. They put in CPUs rated for 45W TDP, but locked them at 35W. This means huge performance losses compared to other units that don't throttle their CPUs' TDPs. As a result, people buying these will get less performance than they expect. And even with the throttling, this thing still gets blazing hot, reaching well over 90*C at the processor thermal sensor.

>I could have forgiven the weird keyboard layout and switch from normal to scissor keys, since by the last generation they seem to have hammered out decent travel. But this...between the artificially limited performance, deliberately subpar casing and cooling, and comparative flimsiness of the case compared to, oh, my almost 9 year old T500...Lenovo's on my s***-list.

So, bad keyboard and sub-par performance for the published spec.
>>
>>55411730
That is NOT a thinkpad. The redesign imo is complete crap. Get a classic design one like a normal /g/ user.
>>
>>55411790
>go big or go home
the problem isn't even that they're heavier (I wouldn't mind, I often carry multiple 5lbs textbooks, so 1lb more or less on the laptop doesn't matter)

BUT with these big laptops it is really uncomfortable to type when the edge rests against your wrist.
It's the same with my desktop keyboard (which is pretty "high", too) but here I can just use a wrist rest, I can't carry that shit with my laptop all the time tho

>>55411794
ok thanks
my macbook also does 90C ;^) but it's uncomfortable if your hands get warm so I agree, it'd be better to get something with better cooling

So how is the P50?
>>
>>55411316
You asked if there were any easy swaps, so the answer is no. There's just no direct drop-in correctly-sized display and the graphics output for the internal display isn't made for higher resolutions.

It *can* be done if you read moon runes and are handy with soldering very small things and you don't mind losing the displayport and you can source or DIY the cables and converter parts and slightly mod the lid to accept the one close-to-correctly sized 1080p display. I remember reading some Worst Korean did it.

I want to be able to just connect the dock to the KVM switch with a USB...do the same with the desktop...and then connect the monitor, keyboard, and mouse to the KVM switch.

It doesn't matter where you source your display as long as you have a compatible KVM switch with proper ports

What is the best OS for thinkpads (or in my case t530)?

Ohhhh...so you're saying the docking station is redundant? I could just connect the laptop directly to the KVM switch without the dock??

If so, I feel like an idiot for not realizing this sooner lol

Kvm switches work by displaying one image and using all the same peripherals. Some can use kust the HDMI to do it while others use a separate usb cable.

yes, why would you need a dock when the laptop is already capable of outputting a display with a built in port?

I'm looking for a new laptop for work (spreadsheets, 2D autocad), is the t460 a solid choice?

Is their ssd worth it or should get one myself?

I guess I just didn't realize that video, keyboard, audio, and mouse data could all pass through a single USB wire....Please excuse my massive technological ignorance...I had assumed that the dock would somehow "integrate" all that data before it passed through the USB wire...

So, basically, it's gonna work like pic related. That makes sense. Thank you.

Does it need to be USB 3.0 ?

Aftermarket SSD is usually cheaper

Wait so you have to press the fn key to use the function keys? I knew the new keyboard layout was bad but I didn't realize they had went full retard.

Also, I just realized that this makes docking stations sort of obsolete....why would you need a big clumsy docking station when you can just as easily get the same result by plugging in a single USB cable? Is the docking station an antiquated technology?
>>
>>55415386
No it doesn't
>>
can an x220 with an i5 run photoshop cc reasonably well?
>>
>>55415482
I run photoshop on my x220t with kvm really well
>>
>>55415515
kvm? is that the qemu virtualization thing? If it is then it should be fine directly in windows I suppose.

Explain.

Why would you go through the trouble of docking your laptop in a big, bulky station when you can simply plug it into a small device like the KVM switch. if you eliminate the second computer, the KVM switch is basically just a really compact docking station...plugging in a single USB is easier than locking in your entire laptop base to a big monstrosity.

>Bulky
Yeah, nah.
You drop the laptop into the dock, just werks
>>
>>55415762
eh, i'd rather not take up that much precious space on my desk when i could just plug the laptop into a device the size of a deck of cards with a single USB wire
