They mad a new one using an Atom CPU, a detachable touch screen, and runs Windows 10
>>
>>55380338
Sabotage. Microsoft didn't want kids learning to linux. Just in case they ever climbed out of poverty and could afford to license windows.
>>
>>55380338
it's incredibly slow and frustrating, but the os is quite clever for educational use

they turned down help from steve jobs, that's what went wrong:

>>
Here in Argentina the government implemented something similar. Everything went wrong. There wasn't any kind of training for teachers, the netbooks were extremely slow, and the students didn't use it for other purpose more than taking selfies and playing CS in class.

>There wasn't any kind of training for teachers, the netbooks were extremely slow, and the students didn't use it for other purpose more than taking selfies and playing CS in class.
That sounds like a computer lab in your average American high school
>>
>>55380611
They wanted to make cheap computers though. Jobs couldn't help with that.
>>
>>55380338
The idea that technology educates is fucked up. I'd be way better off if I had had zero technology growing up.
>>
all the poor countries didn't want open sores. they didn't understand that computer skills are universal
>>
>>55380622
Every third world countries gave netbooks to their students. The goal isn't to train a generation of codemonkeys, but to familiarize them with ICT (or IoT. Whatever) so that they may take interest in STEM subjects
>>
>>55380338
Also, I think Rpi would do better than olpc. For the price of 1 olpc, you can get 20 rpi zero

They did a similiar thing in turkey too, but went way more wrong. They give tablets which retarded app named "device manager" preinstalled which drains baterry like hell, disables connecting to pc, "bans" games and some necesarry apps (file manager) there's another app helps you install books on your tab, which you already have. Some people who were quick enough rooted their tabs with bypassing device manager, which got updates later to impossible to root, others throw that away.
Oh and forgot to mention, they installed huge board sized computers on every class; then they abbandoned pardus, which was the only active os of turkey, just because it doesn't "support" touch screen and removed all their code and became debian based retard. But wait, it gets worse, they installed pardus (abbandoned version, 2011.2) even though it doesn't support touch screen, they dual boot it with windows 7, since there isn't a keyboard (only touch screen) you sit back looking at dual boot menu for 10 seconds
>tldr: turkey is worse, they are literally crazy, they discontinued their only os for nothing
>>
>>55380622
Some people found ways to install Linux distros and even WinXP on those netbooks, so people started stealing them.
>>

Underrated post.
>>
>>55380338
Racist white people who didn't want to buy one for themselves for twice the price so some kid in Nigeria could get a free laptop.
>>
>>55380338
Kids don't give a shit about computing.
Teachers can't be assed to teach about what they themselves don't understand and don't know what to do with it.
Nobody's around to maintain those.
Ironically schools oftem deem these, like a lot of other educational tools, to be too expensive for daily use in case something breaks down.
Supervising officials are busy stealing and reselling.
Did I say that most kids world-wide, regardless of how poor or starving, really don't give a shit once the initial wow factor is over?

Have two in our house. One is mine, kept after graduating, have it as a disposable laptop that I use to do skiddie shit like steal credentials with sslstrip. The other's is my sister, and that Intel AntiTheft thing activated because the network was down for a while and she wasn't able to rearm the countdown mechanism, so it's basically useless until the one IT guy unlocks it (the IT guy knows absolutely nothing about anything at all, got his job because of nepotism, and has stacks upon stacks of Intel AT locked machines sitting in the computer room).

Yeah, it was fucking terrible. I did cannibalize the hard drive out of my sister's computer, though, to do a repair on an old but useful notebook.

b-but porn!
>>
>>55380622
an argentinean i talk to frequently told me that his highschool withheld all the notebooks and never gave them out
>>
>>55383933
My old highschool jettisoned their entire computer lab to buy a bunch of overpriced ipads and one of those giant Microsoft tables.
Then they barred all students from using the tablets, giving exclusive access to the tards and their handlers.
>>
>>55384782
when I graduated highschool and came back a year later to get some forms i needed I noticed every possible student computer was replaced with a chromebook
>>
>>55384821
Not that guy, but at least chromebooks are useful in a school setting.
>>
>>55380409
That's way worse, what a shame.
>>
>>55380414
>sabotage
Half of the kids using the OLPC wouldn't even know it was linux, the other half wouldn't remember it fondly on the shit OLPC hardware
>>
>>55380338
fucking africa....would have just been one million laptops per warlord anyway
>>
>>55380622
so, the same thing would happen in the US?

shit, I had a class in my junior year of highschool (this was fucking years ago) where literally all we did was play Halo and occasionally some CS on the LAN (with 'lulzy' player names like SIDS, a baby, and shotacon)
it was ostensibly a programming class

most of my other classes were actual classes with actual teachers, but no one spoke up about this one
at the library, every screen was a: someone staring at word with half of a page of what is probably supposed to be a 6 page essay or b: someone playing Halo

even at the municipal library, a good quarter of the screens were people playing Halo

>>55385058
why they thought writing the fucking DE in an interpreted language on a slow as shit machine was a good idea, I'll never understand
had a web design professor with one of them, was kind of friendly with me, I fucked around on the machine for a bit, nearly everything felt sluggish, and I used a PIII laptop from 2001 for ten years, so it's not like I'm a stranger to slow-ass machines

I guess it wasn't quite slow, it was more unresponsive than anything. The laptop I had was slow, but felt responsive enough, it just took forever to do anything remotely intensive. The OLPC was still kind of slow, but it felt even slower than it was.
also, the sub-pixel layout was retarded

it looking more like a toy than anything probably didn't help the machine out at all
>>
>>55380622
Yup. Here in Australia, the Labor Government gave out laptops etc. to all public school students... They were used for everything but school work... Kids were using skype, taking selfies and playing games... They got trashed too with kids dropping them down flights of stairs, leaving them outside in the rain etc.

dumb niggers

In Uruguay they are working pretty damn well (lookup Plan Ceibal).
So well they are even extending the experience with free tablets to old people.
>>
I bought a olpc and never received it
>>
>>55385282
Which state? Here in qld, everyone got one but you had to pay for it
>>
>>55380338
The African warlords stole them from all the african children to make a supercomputer for their war operations
