So I've finally decided to start dual booting my windows 7 with something Linux based. My only experiencing with Linux so far is from one of my classes in which we used Ubuntu server and Ubuntu OS to make web servers and stuff. So far I like how the terminal is on Ubuntu but if there are other alternatives that would be better I would be more than happy to use it instead.

I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Linux isn't for people who want an OS to be enjoyable to use. It's for people who want to spend their time customizing and patching their OS, in order to make computer usage the hobby it was in the 1970s (as it should be).

It sounds like you're just a pleb who uses his computer merely for the sake of running useful programs, rather than for the challenge in doing so.

If you're new to linux, use ubuntu, yes. Don't use mint, it's too simplified in my opinion, you may not learn as much. Ubuntu is great, it's got the functionality of debian (more advanced linux) with the look and feel of windows.

the fuck are you on about OP?

ubuntu has just as much of the "look and feel of windows" as a potato covered in shit, just tell them to get debian and piss off.

OP here, honestly I just kinda want a new OS to use I've been using windows for most of my life and thought it would be fun to learn how to Linux

Thing is, you don't really use Linux the same way you do Windows. In fact most people use Linux FROM Windows. Linux just kind of hides in the back and you access it by going to websights or whatever

Run windows in a virtual machine in linux and then at least you can shitpost while windows is updating.
