Depends where you live and what you're shipping. All letters are always done by the USPS due to confidentiality restrictions and regulations.
Packages are delivered to your door if you own a home, and in the apartment I lived at it depended on the delivery service and the actual delivery driver as to whether my packaged were placed at door to my apartment, or on the bottom floor next to the mailbox.
