So I just started using an overclocking tool for my 660, and it turns out my CPU is running under load at ~90-100 degrees celsius

What can I do to fix this?

Turn up the fans with the fan profile. Enjoy your jet engine.

MSI afterburner can't do anything to the CPU fan

My mistake, thought that was GPU fans.
Speedfan should werk for CPU, or else dig into your bios settings, there should be something there depending on your mobo.

Well, it helped a bit, but it's still getting ridiculously hot.

What else can I try?

Underclock or undervolt. Remember that undervolting can cause instability, but if you notch it down just a little it probably won't make any performance difference while reducing temps slightly.

After that you're looking at replacing thermal paste or getting a better CPU cooler altogether.

Remove heatsink reapply paste and remount card. If that doesnt help you may need to adjust the overall thermal environment of your case, get a new GPU thermal unit, or get a new card.

Woah OP, is that a screenshot from your jet plane control panel?

Apparently I had an overclock running my i5 at 4.2ghz

I toned it down to 3.9ghz and pic related is the result while encoding now.

I can't tell if that UI design is ironic or serious

Clearly shit thermal paste application. Alternately a more aggressive fan profile (from the bio) will help. Or a better cooler. Tbh low/mid 80s are perfectly acceptable for sustained load. You've been benchmarking your shit for 44 minutes. That's fine.

Clean you computer? The dust bunnies are running awol inside your machine by now.

It's serious unfortunately.

what cooler are you using?

Even with a stock cooler shit-fan from intel, no cpu should be running at 90-100. Here's what to do, in order:

Remove fan/heatsink. Grab isopropyl alcohol (higher percentage = easier to use and faster to complete) and a paper towel. Dip a finger-sized portion of the towel in the alcohol and rub the thermal paste until it starts to come off. Repeat with a fresh paper towel until the CPU is completely clean and clear of the paste.

Do the same thing with the underside of the heatsink.

Re-apply the paste to the CPU only; Applying it to both will almost guarantee that you use way too much. Use a pea-sized droplet on the CPU and then use a business card to spread it evenly over the surface. Mount the heatsink ONCE and clamp it in. (If you have to pick the heatsink back up you might as well start over with the paste, as you can easily cause air bubbles to form from the do-over)

If it still runs as hot as before, you're either in a room that is way too fucking hot, you've got dead/non-existant fans, or your computer case is air-locking for some reason. Switch all fans to blow outwards like exhaust fans and you'll guarantee a negative pressure environment. If the room is ~70 degrees F and you have proper fans, there's no real reason why it will run that hot anymore unless you have a major power problem.

Also, even if that takes care of it entriely, spend 20 dollars and get yourself a heatsink that's exponentially better than a stock unit. Seriously; you can get a cooler master heatsink for 20-30 dollars on amazon that will lower the idle temp by 8-10 deg C on average if not more.

The whole UI could be condensed to a standard gray dialog at 1/4th the size
