Seattle is offering $100+k/year to start these days for just about anything. A friend of mine joined this startup that only works 15 hours per week, paid 135k/yr. Run by some crazy weebs who believe if you work over 15hrs your code is shit so that's all you do.

Well, I guess there is one thing I can tell you. In a technical interview, if they ask you how you'd solve a simple problem, the first question you should ask yourself is "what data structure do they want me to use here?" You should know about hash tables, sets, binary search trees (including self-balancing BSTs,) and fifos, queues, and heaps. Also, if the input is a list and they want you to find the 2nd highest value or something, the answer is to just sort it first.

are medians of medians methods really that unknown? They are pretty fast at that task. I think there was a paper or arxiv in the past month that came up with an improved - faster variation again.
you dont even have to know what it does, just telling them you know thats the fastest shit is better answer than anything else
