afaiu, AMD cards have always been much more powerful than nvidia cards (for example, AMD cards were being used to mine bitcoins. no one would ever think about doing that with nvidia cards), but their drivers usually suck, and they aren't better for games, which annoys manchildren
the sad thing is that both intel and nvidia cheat against AMD (compilers, "performance hacks" and so on), which is why their products are "better" (and much more expensive), but not really that much.
