I've done this for basically all the computers my friends and family run that are old as shit and it seems to jest werk every time.
My buddy has a shitty old laptop that came preinstalled with vista which was the first time I ever saw that shit in the wild. Was bloated as fuck and took a minute just to render the right click menu.
Installed linux on that bitch and it runs like a goddamn unicorn. Haven't heard any complaints since.
