/g/, I need your help regarding hard drives.

Does SSD give that much of a speed boost for every day tasks such as PDF viewing/editing and Onenote? Or is the benefit primarily for fast boot up? So if I have my laptop on stand up mode or on all the time, it has less noticeable benefits?
>>
>>55261049
Yes SSD is faster.

All you need to know is MLC or kill yourself.

Multi-leaf collimators?

Multiple level cell (stores 2 bits per flash cell)
SLC is more expensive and only for enterprise stuff these days, TLC is slower and less reliable.

Just executing files in general is a fuck ton faster. its like the matrix, it can't be properly explained to you, you just have to see it for yourself to believe it.

Ok thanks anon!

Bought one about a month ago. My PC boots up in 30 seconds now. It took 1:30 min before that. It's definitely worth it in my book. Games load much faster, too, although I have to settle just for 1-2 bigger games installed at a time to make use of that speed.
>>
>>55263032
Good to hear this. Definitely more motivated re: SSD now. Thanks!
>>
The better question is, Hybrid SSD/HDD vs just a plain SSD - is there a big difference in speed?
>>
Boot times mean little to me since I leave it on all the time. Executing and loading files is where it's at. If it took you 10 secs to open a file, it now takes 3. If it took you 3 secs before, it now opens instantly. When I played MMOs with people in the room, I'd be done loading the next map in 15 secs. I then have to wait around for them to finish 30 secs later. That's 30 secs that I can alt-tab and shitpost on 4chan. If that isn't worth getting SSD, I don't know what it.
>>
>>55263099
Don't get a hybrid SSD/HDD because all those extra parts reduces reliability.

And it's only fast when the data is cached, non cached and new data is just as slow as a HDD
>>
>>55261939
Cringe
>>
>>55261195
No, Multiple Large Cocks

My family is full of Apple fanboys and everybody has either an iMac or a macbook. These are roughly equivalent systems because the iMac mostly uses laptop parts to remain so slim. There's a huge difference in doing stuff like opening applications in favor of the macbooks because they use SSDs and the iMac we have either uses an SSD/HDD hybrid, or a full HDD. I know that's anecdotal evidence, but still, SSDs are so much faster at accessing files that you'll definitely notice an improvement in everything that involves reading/writing files.

Also, depending on the SSD you get and the power consumption of your current drive, you might get a small battery life increase with an SSD.
>>
Ok thanks anon!
>>
YES

FUCKING FAST

DON'T GET A HYBRID
>>
Are there problems with unistalling things and installing other things because of read write cycle stresses
>>
Don't listen to these idiots that believe in skewed, flawed benchmarks and their anecdotal stories of how they changed to an SSD from their bloated, shitty, corrupted Windows install on a 15 year old HDD and say "OMG SO FAST."

They are not that much faster in real world performance and they cost a FUCKTON more per GB, making them goddamn useless.

>in b4 the poorfag stupid argument

Boots faster
Programs open faster
OS is more responsive
The only real con is the price when you compare price/gb vs a HDD

Games do load faster, so if you play something with constant loading (different maps/levels) it may be worth putting those games on it

SSD is really worth it, but only one, and to store the OS there and like some anons says, games that takes big loads, like Fallout/TES. Just get a 128/250GB SDD and then a 1/2 TB HDD or two.

yes, when i moved to a ssd, my os was hammering my boot drive so hard it was reading at 700kb a second, when i got the ssd and moved that to a storage drive, it magically went back up to 120mb per second.

os hammers the shit out of hdds, ssds take that hit FAR better then hdds.

OP here, the main reason I ask is because there are no cheaper laptops with SSDs. I just need an i3, but all the ones with SSDs are $1000+.

But it sounds like the benefits are very noticeable so I will bite the bullet.

Ssd move large amounts of saved program data 3-9x faster then mechanical drives. Expect programs to open faster, games to load maps faster, and file manipulation to occur faster. HDD can only move so fast. SSD's on the other hand are circuits with no moving parts.
>>
>>55261349
Actually well not really anymore. SLC has a llw data density. NVMe drives stomp out the SLC for home users meme. The samsung evo 850 is a great and very reliable drive. The Intel 750 nvme drive is fast as hell. Nvme drives are the fastest like the samsung 950 pro.

It's around the $500 price point. A trancend 42mm m.2 500gb ssd runs around 140ish. The io sucks tho. Only downside.

The screen is amazing, there is a model with touch. The touchpad is made of glass, it's the best laptop touchpad even when compared to Mac's. Backlit keyboard. Aux jack is iffy. Wifi is great. Broadwell i3 is powerful enough to run 99% of my programs including very light gaming like the first Half-life and assault cube.
