I really don't think it's possible. Torrenting is just too god damn convenient. You can download sequentially (streaming) or randomly (most efficient), your progress is saved even in case of a power failure, everyone is an uploader when active so no single point of failure.
Big businesses should be using it more. Can you imagine downloading battlefield 4 at 1Gbps+ if EA had a 1Gbps seedbox seeding the game?

Torrenting will never be obsoleted like limewire.
The only thing that would replace it is something better, faster and easier to index.
What I could see replacing bittorrent is something that is a peer to peer in the nature of sharing the files. Everyone is a node containing part of all the torrents in circulation. Torrents use a cryptographic identifier to indicate who the uploader is. (ie some ripping team could sign their stuff with their public key so you knew it was from them.) Ideally part of the torrent file would contain meta data that could be used to search against.
It would solve all the problems that torrent sites currently have with DCMA takedowns, high bandwidth costs, etc and spread that cost to everyone. It would eliminate private trackers and all the problems that go with them (if they shut down all the files go into oblivion along with all the meta data the site provides)
The most someone could do to shutdown bittorrent is take down all the major sites providing torrent file but new ones would pop up hours later. Only way I could see bittorrent dying is if private trackers take over, become even more exclusive and the quality of files on public trackers tanks to the point where no one bothers anymore.
It's kinda like that now, unless you're looking for a brand new movie finding a 720p or higher version of a older film is next to impossible. Like I tried to find a non shitty rip of 'a night at the roxbury' on public trackers and only found SD versions or really tiny files that claimed 720 or 1080. It's not even a obscure movie. All the folks who used to seed for the sake of seeding and helping anons out left for exclusive private trackers where they can feel important.

Then still be legally connected without some asshat international agreement or gaggle of associations calling for your network to be disconnected from the mainstream internet.
