The hex core Thubans generally slightly outperform a 6300 clock for clock due to having six real cores instead of three modules, but they can't clock nearly as high. They were good for their day, whereas the 6300 really wasn't two and a half years later.

amd vishera cores are way better than the thubans. but zen will be soooo good.

Phenom II 1055T here. I recently got it for free as an upgrade to my Athlon II X4 and honestly I'm disappointed. The difference is negligible when it comes to gaming. Video rendering and other things that can fully use 6 cores is blazing fast though.

It's bottlenecking my GTX 970 like a motherfucker in games that only effectively use 1-2 cores but I'll hold on to it for a while because I'm curious how it will fare in better threaded games that are released these days.

When a bought a r9 380X for my desktop I installed my old r9 270X on a prebuilt HP PC where I work (family run) but the CPU (an Athlon X2 220) wasn't enough and bottlenecked the card.

The most pressing concern, and one that will hopefully be fixed so quickly that I’ll feel like a fool for having written about it, relates to CPUs that don’t support SSE4.1; that includes the still-common Phenom II series. People with those CPUs are reporting crashes, often at launch. There is a possible fix but the developers are on the case already and reckon they’ll have a solution ready later today. Good work.

not a Phenom II but im running similar, the Athlon II X2 220, but im swapping it out soon for the X4 630 (need a quadcore for muh gaymen). this generation of CPU, in general, from AMD is solid. the Athlon i have even lets me overclock it a bit, even though it's running in this rig with an eMachines mobo (gotta love nForce chipsets!)
>>
Who /Athlon845/ here? These are Excavator desktop CPUs that perform better clock and IPC than a Phenom II, cost $60 or $70 bucks, and take up only 65 Watts of power. I just ordered one for my new build, which I'll use while I wait for Zen.

My current build is a phenom ii x4 955 though.

I ordered one for a client back when it launched because it fit his budget, his A68 motherboard, and he already had a GTX 760. There was no appreciable difference in performance from his dead A10-7700K.
>>
>>55242178
"shit" is relative m8. the price/perf/watts is fantastic. It'll bottleneck me on some games, but overall it's a great placeholder while I wait for entry-budget Zen chips.

You do realize that Raven Ridge and Zen are both going to be on the AM4 socket, not the FM2+?
>>
>>55242293
yes, and? If I stuck with an AM3 mobo I would have to replace that too. The only "upgrade path" I could choose would be to get a skylake cpu so I don't waste money on DDR3 ram.

it's a placeholder because it's going in my new case, with new PSU and eventually new GPUs. I'm getting it now so I can sell my old build and recoup the entire cost.
>>
>>55242330
Why are you waiting on Zen? Zen only makes sense to people who need more threads than sense. An eight-core Zen won't even match a 6-core Ivy Bridge-E, and that's the best case scenario.

>vs words straight from AMD's own mouth
Listen AMcuck'D, even their own Pajeets admitted that expecting similar single-threaded performance from Zen as Haswell-E and Broadwell-E was wishful thinking. They also said that Zen's SMT was not as efficient as Intel's, so their CPUs will be priced accordingly to their Intel counterparts. The leaked benchmarks and slides all but prove that Zen will not be on par with Intel's HEDT CPUs from the last three years.
That's not all bad news, AMDkike. That means that you can get an eight-core Zen for the same price as an i7-6850K rather than paying a grand, because consumers shouldn't expect it to beat the 6-core Broadwell-E by any significant margin. But it's still two-cores more than Intel.

The bad news is that their FSB is shit compared to Intel's LGA-2011-3 and will only have between 16-20 PCIe 3 lanes, not the 28/40 that Intel has.

your post is shit. AMD is doing an Intel-style "tick tock" with Zen. Zen is the tick where they're shrinking the transistors, and Zen+ is the tock where they'll bring the IPC up to speed with Intel. 6 cores is perfectly sensible for modern, well-threaded game engines and for virtualization. for poorfags like myself, what we want is an improvement over bulldozer and older architectures, which Zen will give us. We don't care what Intel has. Vast majority of vidya don't even bottleneck on i5s two generations old. That's all that matters to most people.
>>
>>55242727
>Zen is the tick where they're shrinking the transistors
No, Zen is a long-awaited tock from their Phenom II days. It has more in common with K10 than it does with any of the Construction cores. Zen+ is a double-tock.
>>
>>55242755
tru, it's a tick and a tock. it's a shrink and a new arch.

Heh, your little tidbit responding to the crazy Thuban owner reminded me of my attempt to overclock my Phenom II that almost ended horribly.

Long story short overclocking when 4-pin CPU power is the only thing available is a no-no, and while the VRMs survived on a 4+1 board, the power plug on the PSU and the plug socket on the board were both melted from the current crossing from the PSU lines to the board pins. I had to bust out my dremel and carve out the damaged bits of the board socket, and use the other 4 pin on the PSU (it was 4+4) to get the power working again.

I aint ever doing that again cause that scared the fuck out of me when it happened.

they blamed it on a factory fire, but all the outlet stores still have hundreds of thousands if not millions of sticks...

pretty sad that only rare once in a blue moon sales has decent pricing for ram.
>>
>>55245937
Nope, but i was actively cooling them with a (rather loud) 70mm fan draped over them. Not as effective as giving them a heatsink, but giving them that much airflow was more than enough to keep them from burning. Plus that board has built in VRM protection that forces the lowest CPU power state for throttling. The only thing that actually melted was the plastic around the plug and input socket, which was easily rectified to allow continued operation.

PSU is an Antec Neo ECO 400C. Good little unit, not the best, but certainly not the worst either.
>>
>>55245925
>>55245952
isn't ddr3 still pretty cheap? you can't get ram rated for faster than 1600 anyway without it being a waste on a phenom ii, internal memory controller runs at 1333mhz so it actually 'prefers' the ram to run at the same speed, in my experience anyway.
so you want the best 1600 c9 (or c8 if that exists for ddr3?) which is substantially less pricey than the epic 1866 and 2133mhz kits that FX core users need.
>>
>>55246018
thermal throttling is the most terrible bios feature i've ever heard of or used. at least on asrock boards, it makes even a well cooled computer near unusable by forcing all the voltages down as soon as it generates any heat or something drastic like that. how paranoid are asrock about their shit melting on people hah.
>>
>>55246058
Depends on how sensitive it's set. Some are super sensitive as you've said, while others, like my own, will go off only when a real overheat event is detected and will counter quick enough to prevent thermal runaway.

And then there's the shit ones (looking at you MSI) where if it goes off at all its usually too late and thermal runaway has struck.

Amazing that the mobo survived that, but not surprising that the plugs melted. Heavily overclocked thuban can pull 300w according to the reviews, and mine may have reached 400w (my CPU/NB voltage is raised from 1v to 1.45v).

Yeah, Phenom II's may be tanks when it comes to the voltage, but good god can they suck down the wattage. Its one of the reasons why I've been iffy on bumping my 940BE to a thuban. The other reason is because I dont want to put such a chip on a damaged board.

Yeah, I'm using custom water. Only a CPU block, no mobo (I don't think they made blocks for the sabertooth), but it's overkill for only cooling the cpu (480mm x 80mm thick rad, 4 gentle typhoons, Liang D5 pump, Heatkiller 3.0 block). CPU temp peaks at 45 degrees during the summer with Prime95. I also put a slow 120mm fan on the VRM heatsinks because otherwise they get hot enough to make me nervous. This was a bit of an experiment to see if a well cooled CPU can be run at a supposedly dangerous voltage for a long time. Might try chilled water eventually, once zen comes out and I don't mind risking killing this setup.

I don't get why people do this, the motherboard costs as much as one that lets you build a completely modern Haswell system with USB3/SATA3/PCIE3. The only difference is that the CPU costs $45 instead of $5 but it also has 400%-500% better IPC.

Even Steamroller cannot consistently beat K10 cores on a clock-to-clock comparison. The only reason Bulldozer wins is through its higher frequencies, and extensions like AVX. The floating point performance is garbage.
>>
>>55247408
Thanks for the link, but my chip is pretty bad. Many people can get 4.2 at 1.5-1.55v, while mine needs 1.6, so I doubt I could get 5ghz without chilled water. Still, my voltage is limited by my motherboard, not my CPU temps, so watercooling could still help significantly

>>55247558
Yes, but the frequencies are MUCH higher. A good Thuban will hit 4.2ghz on air, while a good Vishera will hit 5ghz on air.

vishera will also do it with much lower power and generate a lot less heat, plus the caches are bigger and the internal memory controller supports 1866mhz ram so you can get a lot more out of high end gpu's than you could ever get with phenom's in theory.

The ram is tthe only limiting factor. With other games that don't use retarded textures. The CPU is great and it overclocks amazingly. Sadly I am restricted by my motherboard and its SATA ports...but I swear It competes with a G4400. I can't believe that in 7 years since I got the thing all intel can do for budget is 3GHZ dual-cores.

I do video rendering and photo manip at high resolutions and it also works fine both while Im working, and when I export a project.

No worries with that CPU, but I'd reccomend getting 8 gigs of ram. Pair it up with a used gpu with lots of VRAM and you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between it and a "modern PC"

Athlon X4 750K (3.8GHz) here

It's okay. The strongest CPU I've ever used was an i7 980X and it was noticeably faster than my Athlon but not in such a way that I feel like I'm using a low end CPU. Chances are I'll probably stick to AMD when Zen comes out though I'm sure it wont be as good as Intel's offerings.
