Windows 95, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Ubuntu (dualbooted for ages with Vista, and then eventually settled as a main OS until Windows 7), Windows 7, Linux Mint, Xubuntu (doing an in-place OS upgrade on Mint is flaky for no reason and they don't want you doing that anyway), Windows 8, OS X, Windows 7 again

these days, I'm mostly on Win 7, occasionally using OS X

I pretty much used Windows exclusively from Win 95 to Win XP, then I got into Linux a bit running it as my main OS from time-to-time. I think Ubuntu 6 or 7 was my first, then went back to XP which I later upgraded to the 7 beta which I upgraded to 7 RTM. Around the time Windows 8.1 came out I bought a Mac so I've been using OS X from 10.9.2 to 10.11.6b.

Windows 3.1 + MS-DOS 6
Windows 3.0 + MS-DOS 6 (at summer job)
Windows 95 OSr2 (+DOS 6.22)
Win95 OSr2 + Debian (v2/3? kernel was 2.0.??)
Windows 2000 (laptop provided by college) + Debian ( w/ self-compiled 2.2, then 2.4 kernel )
Windows XP + Debian ( on gaming desktop )
Windows 7 + Debian ( on gaming desktop ) + Debian alone on a bunch of servers and other computers dedicated to running custom programs ) ( + GalliumOS/Ubuntu on other laptop )

Basically I learned BASIC programming on the TRS-80 and it fucked me up as far as programming skills go, until I learned C while in college (I wasn't in CS tho).
Studied Java in Uni, along with Haskell, Prolog and a bunch of esoteric shit. I do mostly C++ and i386/x64 assembly at work, but I'm still a C purist at heart.

Windows is fine, so are most Linux distros, especially if you have a decent understanding of how they're built.

Some OSses are inherently superior to other, relative to your requirements, but being a fanatic of any one is pointless.
These days, you can get your programs to work on any particular one, with relatively little effort, so long as you're the one writing them.

Finally jumped the boat and running Debian and Mint across several machines (3, to be precise) and I fucking love it.

But I'll try 10.12 again, just because of Siri. Speech recognition was there since Mac OS 8, but Siri is a whole new level of competence.

You won't. Why on earth would you move to BSD of all things after spending your whole life using Windows? If you switch away from Windows, you should go for one of the big Linux distros instead of trying to be a special snowflake.

Wut, going from DOS to Windows 1.0 why? Any Windows up til 95 was trash, which is not to praise 95 by any means. I have no idea why a DOS wizard would've switched to Windows before that. Maybe running something in Windows every now and then but certainly not using it over DOS.

Some corrections:
- 7 was used up until about the time I finished with arch.
- BSD is easier to grasp and more stable/better than linux in my opinion. Virgins would be better off skipping linux and using BSD instead unless they're massive pussies or have pro-gpl license opinions.

Also, Windows 10 is very good overall but I understand if there are some privacy concerns.

I used Windows 3.1 and 95 at friend's houses and school but computers were so expensive and nearly nobody had the internet yet so I went right from MSDOS to Webtv when the internet got going which became MSNTV and then to Windows 98 at home when I could afford a computer.
Gradually used Windows less and less until now I only boot into it to play MS Flight Simulator.
Used most of the major and many of the not so major Linux distros but always came back to Debian.
