Are external SSD drives a meme?

>External SSD drive, you won't use it to store your o.s

>Probably your media files. Can be stored on a 1TB external WD or Seagate for 60$

>Fuckin expensive they are, SSDs!

>650MBs theoretical speed, bottle necked by USB

>USB 3.0 = 5Gbs, actual speed well below 150MBs.

>Why would one even buy an EXTERNAL SSD?
>>
Do you even know how to write a 4chan post? Also >>>/g/sqt
>>
Its possible to run portable applications or even full games off it still, like if you want to take your desktop steam library with you on a trip or something, you can move your steam library to the external ssd and use it with a laptop wherever you go.

USB is gonna be the bottle neck, try running a fully installed distro on an external SSD. The moment you start multitasking, USB gives up.

Portable vm over eSATA, makes "buisness class" laptops more bearable.

I have a few of these so, if I use an SSD it's max speed supported at SATA III capability. Better performance than USB 3.0 as well in my own testing, just works better overall. Got an eSATA/USB port in the laptop itself and one on the docking station so it works for me.

I play GTA V on a 500GB 850 EVO through USB3.

they seem to be pretty common on my planet
>>
>>55216902
I run a ton of VMs off of an external SSD via USB 3.0 on my MBP. Good quality USB 3.0 ports won't bottleneck SSDs. It works flawlessly.
>>
I store my OS on a external HDD

Because USB sticks, even USB 3.0 sticks with high read and write speeds, are nothing compared to an actual SSD. Hell, even an SATA III SSD coupled with a USB 2.0 performance would offer better overall performance with the crippled full read/write speeds.

>look kids, someone that doesn't understand storage technology

yes, i got a question.

is the creator of your picture implying that you're able to fuck an OS?, otherwise, why should i trust a slut more than a nice dude who's wearing a neat suit for halloween?

I don't see how they would be a meme

just plug it in using USB C or some shit like that and it will work fine

you are full of shit, I have a 500GB SSD with Ceedo installed on it and use it all the time in PC cafes, it handles most apps like a champ.

Fuck off, Pajeet

USB 3.0 is still far faster than a HDD can sustain.
Even 7200rpm.

SSD would still be clearly faster.
SSDs are shock proof.
>>
1Tb ssd are under 300$ last time I checked, probably even cheaper now.
If you have the money and like fast thing then why not ?

I have gat 5 on an external hdd to use on my macbook with my external gtx970 and loading time are ridiculously long.

if sata is only 6gbps
why don't we switch to usb 3.1 for internal ssd?
does usb have too much latency/overhead?

Many things have been touted as a meme lately, but this truly is one.

USB 3.1 provides 1.2GB/s of transfer rate.

You tell me.

Sup bitch.
>>
>>55220745
SSD's strength is low latency high IOPS, not sequential read/write speed (the 520MB/s or 1.2GB/s thing). The problem is everyone including /g/ only knows about sequential transfer rate not IOPS.
USB is a latency bottleneck due to its design and will heavily restrict the SSD's strength which is fast random access of small files, which is the key to SSD responsiveness as OS drive.

Great defense OP but you seriously have no fucking clue how to make a 4chan post.
