eBay is the most obvious choice, but you could find yourself to some Vintage watch forums and risk buying from there, ofcourse at the risk of no buyer protection.

ebay, chrono24, WUS forums, Yahoo.jp auctions (old jdm seikos)
you usually do better buying vintage watches in person.

>>55198457
Pulsar is mixed. It was a unique and interesting American watchmaker that made the first LED watch. It was actually a division of Hamilton.

When Seiko acquired it things changed a little. Seiko as a company makes a wide set of watches, some very well made that get put under divisions like Grand Seiko. Pulsar is where watches go if they're not good enough for the Seiko brand name. While they are usable, marketing them as Seiko would diminish the view of quality on Seiko brand watches. That should tell you something.

It's similar to what Citizen does with the Q&Q brand.

Thanks for 10~12 bucks with shipping I'm willing to give that a try. I really did not want to drop twenty plus dollars on a strap that doesn't fit any of my other watches and have it sit in a draw if I did not like the quality or bought a mesh strap.
>>
>>55199543
>>55199626
I really want to like G-Shocks. They practical, durable multi-function watches but as a rule of thumb usually they are massive, bulbous, and ugly as sin. Most have strange proprietary lug withs so you are stuck with the stock resin or having to buy an adaptor if you want a NATO or a perlon strap. Plus the whole SHOCK RESIST and PROTECTION branding drives me nuts. At the same time they are kind of the only game in town when it comes to modern rugged field watches and I do feel the need for a durable quartz watch to take innawoods when I go hunting or just shooting. I'm probably just going to have to find one I can live with.
>>
The Geckota mesh bracelet finally came in last night. It was intended for the King Seiko but the watchmaker's taking his sweet time with it, so I put it on the Tutima Flieger. Doesn't actually look too bad, despite the polished vs. brushed contrast.

New leather NATO strap arrived today. Not the best in the world but it was pretty cheap and it's great quality for the price. Really enjoying the look now.

Only thing missing now is figuring out how to replace the damn crystal, which is fucked beyond polishing. I tried emailing a couple crystal dealers (Esslinger and Crystal-Fit) asking if they had one that would fit but didn't even get a reply back.

What the fuck is wrong with those dealers?

Agreed, there's so much history out there. It's a shame /most/ people gloss over vintage pieces.

I remember the Accutron webm guy was talking to the other Accutronfag (the one with the case) and some fags were bitching about how it's sad that someone would care for and refurbish a vintage watch just to get a few more decent timekeeping years out of it.
I don't even have an Accutron and that pissed me off.
>>
>>55200888
>It's a shame /most/ people gloss over vintage pieces.
I think it's more like

Vintage, as a category, contains most watches ever made and tends to overwhelms new people until they've been around at /least/ a few months. Then at some point some come to realize a lot of nice watches can be gotten at pretty decent prices and then they start with at least some niche (King Quartz or something) before, maybe, branching out later on.
>>
>>55200957

Vintage Grand Seiko 6146 pictured

As for your second point I pretty much concur. People seem to be too quick lump minor restoration in with completely fucked poo2loo and Philippine specials. I would rather see a watch preserved for another generation than just tossed in the parts bin or the trash. Granted that hinges on if the job is done right in the first place.

As for why more people don't buy vintage. It's kind of hard unless you really know what your looking for. Plus there are many internet related horror stories. It's much easier to buy in person and the selection is really going to depend on if your in a major metropolitan area.
For the next vintage on my list (Omega Flightmaster) I'm going to want to see one in person when I work my self into buying one.

Clearly not everyone who wears a watch is a watch enthusiast. Fossil watches tell the time and I assumer there are people who actually enjoy the garish designs. That's good enough to satisfy many.
Enthusiasts on the other hand value things like unique designs, quality materials, quality movements, unique technology, heritage, etc...
Fossil fails to tick any of those boxes. Generic cheap quartz mall shit sums up Fossil as a brand.

A grail doesn't have to be ludicrously expensive. I mainly see it as something that's just out of your reach; whether that be price, or availability, or what have you.
Take for example the Seiko SCVE003. It's not exactly expensive, but its limited run makes it hard to obtain.

Doesn't it haze easier too, and you can't buff it like sapphire or mineral crystal?
Junghans using plexiglass kind of makes me think of Porsche and how they didn't switch to water cooled engines until 1993, and how they still use the RR layout even though better alternatives exist.
>>
>>55203550
What kind of haze? Maybe some shittier acrylic might, or ones with a special coating, but plenty of vintage watches can be buffed completely clear and with less distortion than real glass counterparts.
>>
>>55203550

I don't know about haze but plexi/acrylic crystals are super easy to polish, it's sapphire that you can't really polish.

I have an old steel date sub, another anon has a new no date sub.
No date looks better, i don't like the cyclops, even though it works very well.
Also the new ceramic bezels are nicer than the gold or steel ones, especially the blue looks like crap
Also the fat man case looks like ass.
Otherwise i would say they are very good. Mine is a 0.2 sec average/day
And tough as fuck.
I'd you get one on sale then it is well worth it but at full price ~7000 they are not so great.
The oyster bracelet is very nice and well machined. Brushed steel on top polished on the sides and back.

>>
Are there leather straps that exist that aren't (i assume) crocodile leather?
Currently using a citizen with a metal clasp, but I would also like a more dressy watch with a leather strap, but I just really don't enjoy the crocodile texture
>>
>>55204209

All depends on the jacket and the route you take in making it. If you're talking vintage jackets where the leather is made out of actual leather, like full grain leather, then that would be good if it wasn't too thick, but you'd have to use some kind of backing to keep it stiffer.

For the constructions of this one, I cut the strap pattern on a piece of pigskin split, then glued the material and wrapped it around the pigskin, then glued a piece of vegetable tanned leather down on the back, then stitched with a vintage sewing machine I just got.
>>
>>55204248

Have you ever searched for a leather strap before? There's countless options. Calfskin, cowhide, vegetable tanned, oil tanned, horse, probably lamb or goat.
>>
>>55204248
Check the strap guide in the OP.
Not sure why you mentioned crocodile but on a non-high end Citizen that's much more likely just pressed cow leather. If you want other materials in the price range of crocodile ($30-600) there's ostrich, stingray, shark, cangaroo and all kinds of fancy or rare animals. If you just want leather, again, check the strap guide in OP. Even if it's still lacking tropical straps.
>>
>>55200603
It sort of does, but it works fine so far. I think the flimsiness is more of a function of the clasp type rather than the brand. They offer foldover and butterfly versions as well. Can't say much about wear as I just got it. I've not had the opportunity to compare with top of the line bracelets like a Staib or Vollmer to be able to tell you the difference, unfortunately.

Still, I'll look into this more, making straps out of old camo. I got old desert Flecktarn and one of these old commie respirator bags. Do you think they could be made into fabric-only straps, like a NATO, or they really need a split leather core?

>>
>>55204534

You need something to be able to glue the material to. So possibly a thicker piece of paper or something. I based the technique on this video at around the 1:30 mark.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKlcjx8MRRI
>>
>>55204534
If you can stop the edge from fraying canvas would be great, may need a couple of layer to make it thicker though
>>
>>55198750
Not as bad as /pol/ Far-right wingers shitting on every board, even /tg/.
>>
>>55204579
Cheap but well made and reliable.
They are the entry level seiko but run for decades
>>
>>55204584

You don't want to leave raw edges because they'll fray and unravel the material. Only other way I can think of if the stitch the material wrong sides together, then turn them inside out, but it's difficult to do that with such a narrow piece of material.
>>

My Lord Marvel has a better power reserve and amplitude than my brother's "modern" SNK809 or my "modern" Orient Ray. Despite being Seiko's cheap shit Hi-Beat for the everyday salaryman, essentially unchanged from 1967 to 1980, it was still clearly built to a higher standard. Runs better than new.

>>55206465
Don't fucking bother with a non-hacking 52 caliber, just wait for one that works properly. A non-hacking one is only good for parts, or if you plan to buy the hacking lever elsewhere (be warned they are tough to find). I personally love my 5216, beautiful blue dial and runs at a consistent +3 per day despite underwhelming amplitude. Have you thought about hunting for a 5256? They have the most interesting and unique designs. As for rarity, yes they are rare compared to 56 calibers but that was because they were rare to begin with.

Sure but they don't cost about €100 like a 5206, they go for what, quadruple that?

What does a fully working 5216 usually cost like?

Hello, my fellow Suwa Hi-Beat brother. I'm surprised how nice that leather nato looks on the lord marvel. How does it look on the wrist?

>>55207816
does this work on the jdm models like GW-5000 because if so you might have just completely sold me on a g-shock. Better yet is there anybody making sterilized bezels for the thing?

Citizen radio controlled watches are really cool. Pilot's watches like those are always a bit busy but all the stuff there has a purpose. Not exactly my cup of tea though.

One of these on the way. I was looking for a basic automatic field type watch that wasn't a Hamilton.

I have a couple of nice automatics, but I need a decent looking reliable quartz watch.

I ride a motorbike most days, and the vibrations from the v twin are probs not doing my automatics much good.

What would you recommend /wt/?

You can score a 5256 for $200 USD if you play your cards right.

I personally paid a little over $100 USD for my 5216, plus $200 CAD for service and a new crystal. Worth every penny, absolutely fantastic watch for the money. I find it hilarious how unknown and under appreciated this movement is.
