How does /g/ handle browser fingerprinting? Is there a realistic way to defend against it? (besides browsing on a pristine virtual machine every time)

What if it becomes the No. 1 tracking method?
>>
VMs aren't a terrible idea. Realistically, though, we're going to have to start changing our habits rather than changing our software. Be selective and sparing in the choice of websites you frequent.
>>
Spoofing your user agent is pretty much the best solution, isn't it?

That's only one of many identifying characteristics that are included in a browser "fingerprint."
>>
Browsing on a pristine virtual machine every time doesn't do dick if you visit a website that requires login.
You need tracking scripts disabled and a different fingerprint for each site you visit.
I'm sure somebody has already done or is working on this.

If your UA says you're running Windows but a different part of your fingerprint indicates you're running Linux you're probably unique or at least in a smaller anonymity set than if you just left it.

>a website that requires login
that's a bad argument and you should feel bad

Your tinfoil is showing.

Make an addon that simply spoofs the other characteristics then.

Yes, it consists of many many things like system fonts, resolution, browser plugins, html5 rendering also differs across browsers

Looks like blocking Javascript helps mask many different characteristics.

Truth.
But many sites won't work without JavaScript.
Google could easily insert fingerprinting code into 4chan's CAPTCHA and we'd be left with the choice of not posting or being fingerprinted

If have not already
>>

Doesn't Captcha have some form of fingerprinting? It does a "check" to see if you have to do the Captcha or not.

Use the blender add-on.

Blocking Java script sets you apart from the majority of people who don't block Java meaning you stand out more.
>>

Nah. If you've got scripts disabled then your browser won't talk to Google so they won't know you're on 4chins.
If on the other hand you had scripts partially disabled, like CAPTCHA scripts enabled but Google Analytics disabled, then they could see that you've got scripts partially enabled and potentially use that to fingerprint you.
CAPTCHAs can also be used to fingerprint users: https://browserprint.info/blog/userFingerprinting

Still less unique than getting fully fingerprinted.
