Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

My t530 is making weird electrical noises, like a pulsating sound. One anon said it was a faulty capacitor, so I started taking apart me thinkpad and some of the screws are stuck. I asked some guys and they said that I can cut it off, which doesn't seem to be viable. I also can heat the screw up as it's in the thinkpad. What do?
>>
Hello guys, I need a laptop that I can take around with me to different places.
Looking with something with good battery life, and fairly light.
I am also going to be using in bed before I go to sleep.

What do you guys recommend?

The X230T is a tablet.

I've been looking at getting a x220t, but the fucking screen is 12 inch. Is there a decent 15 inch touch screen dankpad?

I'm looking at this Thinkpad T440s on ebay:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Lenovo-ThinkPad-T440s-i7-4600U-8GB-512GB-SSD-IPS-FHD-1920x1080-type-20AR-001AUS-/282072347233?hash=item41acd27261:g:Z1wAAOSwgApW~x7~

Is this a pretty good deal? The guide says I should be expecting around 400 dollars, so I'm not sure if I should entirely trust this.
>>
>>55178262
So don't get a tablet model.
>>
>>55178295
It's bidding, which is why it's lower. Bidding will go up within the day that's left.

>>

With the 9-cell, 10 hours of web browsing, though if you watch video it'll be a few hours less

If you want more battery you can get a battery slice that goes on the bottom of the laptop

Sorry, it looks like I just couldn't read.
By the way, do you mean to buy a separate T450 trackpad and put it on myself? Is the T440 trackpad not satisfactory? I'm just afraid to break it as the only computer modification I have done is adding an SSD to a desktop.

>>
>>55177962
>My t530 is making weird electrical noises, like a pulsating sound.

That's a consequence of deep power saving modes of the CPU. The burst current demands when it momentarily wakes up to service tasks makes that noise. You can only eliminate it by disabling power saving modes in the BIOS.

T240/X240 were pretty much the absolute low-point of Thinkpads. Expect it to need service within two weeks of unboxing :-(
>>

>Thanks for your help? It's pretty straightforward to put back together and I stopped when the bits fit but I could turn them. I'll look into the powersaving, thanks.
Didn't mean to be harsh, but you need to take a little care when working on these things, and if you're having trouble just getting the screws out, you're sure as hell not going to know what you're doing once you have access to the motherboard.

Go slow, ask questions first, use the right tools.
>>
>>55178458
The main problem with T440 UltraNav is the lack of physical buttons on the top which makes operating the buttons a lot harder. Especially if you like to use the TrackPoint. The user experience was so bad that Lenovo reverted the design in T450 and Lenovo isn't reputed for reverting bad design decisions.

For those guys trying to get the fhd mod on the t420 going.
Word on the german forums is that apparently javie-jie is doing a redesign of the adapter board from scratch.
>>
>>55178975
It shouldn't be too hard unless you're an absolute hamfinger, cannot follow instructions or just cannot be bothered with it.

If that is the case I'd recommend getting either a T430 or T450. The T430 still has the old power adapter so you can multiple ones for cheap. On the other hand if you're going to go ThinkPad for long therm having the new power adapter is better. A newer GPU and CPU are nice too but the T450 is going to be more expensive.

X230 is considered not as good because of the keyboard, but now the X220 keyboard can be swapped in with a bios mod so it's just fine and frankly a hard upgrade because it's otherwise practically identical

X240 changed the whole design outright
>going for a more unibody macish style
>dumping trackpad and trackpoint buttons
>removing the 7th keyboard row and fucking up the Delete/Insert/Home/End key layout
>huge touchpad you can't possibly avoid brushing against while typing
>front of palmrest isn't sloped down anymore so your wrists are uncomfortable depending on the angle
>hinges are mounted on the rear instead of the top, which means batteries extend down and not back which just isn't as comfortable on the lap
>ultrabay is totally gone
>disassembly is now much more involved than before
>generally pissing away all of the brand hallmarks that Thinkpads are known for

All that shit for only a couple benefits
>nice ass screen, which is very nice
>better battery life

Thing is, it could have had those things without totally cucking everything else.

Though to be fair it's still sturdy as fuck and great to type on compared to other typical laptops and a great all around laptop compared to consumer shit, but it just throws away all the nice small details that people liked Thinkpads for.

Models since then follow the same design while adding buttons back. Which is nice but it's not good enough. It's trying to appeal to macfags without realizing it will never win the macfag market because macfags will just buy macs, and the people who liked thinkpads won't like it either

Releasing fucking never

It was supposed to be out in May wasn't it? I haven't heard jack shit about it since then

I also heard it has no audio hardware in it either

Still, would love to get one if it's a decent price. I hope they make one for the T60, that would be the ultimate fucking thinkpad for me if so, maybe with more room to fuck around with it can have less issues
>>

>>
>>55184462
>Releasing fucking never
I have one. But yeah, overseas availability currently nil.
>I also heard it has no audio hardware in it either
The audio is a daughtercard that attaches to the mobo with a cable, like in a couple other late X-series.
>Still, would love to get one if it's a decent price.
I'm still seriously hoping they make a ton of these and sell them for a decent price too. I have a couple mods I want to make/sell for it.

They one I have is a pretty decent machine. All the glory of the old X61, an IPS SXGA screen, and fully modern hardware.
>>
>>55184472
It takes a standard X61 keyboard. There were two options, the ones made by Chicony (louder, more snap) and NMB (mushier, quieter)

>How much did you buy it for? Are there any issues or things not supported with it?

I have an early first-run. The speaker audio doesn't stop when I plug in headphones. So far, that's the only issue. I'm told it's a minor fuckup they'll have fixed and I can buy a new daughtercard. Eventually. Honestly, if they don't fix it, I will.

>>55184551
>I have a couple mods I want to make/sell for it.
>Like what anon?

Biggest is an internal battery. I have no need for spinning rust in the hard drive bay. But it only has one battery management circuit, I'd have to build a glue-battery that merges two SMB batteries into one. There are battery controllers that can do this....
>>
>>55184462

I haven't tried this, but I know a bit about painting (HVLP guns shooting primers, basecoats, clearcoats, and single-stage urethanes, alkyd enamels, etc., on cars, motorcycles, and tools). I wouldn't try to paint a laptop. They're plastic and exposed to pretty high-wear use.

If I wanted to change the look of my T420, I'd probably look into doing a vinyl wrap.

Two questions:

1) Are there any known issues with the T420's Wifi? Mine's in my garage at the moment and seems to lose connection pretty often, usually after a few minutes of use. The Windows icon shows about two bars of signal usually.

Wet sanding, being careful not to cross-contaminate grits. Horizontal-only and vertical-only sanding direction alternated with each grit, keep going till all previous-grit lines are gone. Last pass is a circular polishing motion. Always keep the surface wet.

Can a dead or dying cmos battery affect the power on of a x220? Mines having trouble starting. I have to push the power button for 30 or more secs the first time i boot it in the day, but if i turn it off and on again its impossible to replicate the problem.
>>
>>55185362
Agreed, the X300 has people who loved loved loved it, and there are no exact equivalents today.

No.
That sounds more like a marginal semiconductor or some other component that has to be warm to work reliably.
>>
>>55185374
I think it'll boot without a CMOS battery

Probably more likely is you spilled coke into your power button you slob

The button working after being able to turn it on probably has nothing to do with battery or power and more that contacts work but then get fucked up after being left alone

Failing that it's a board issue
>>
>>55185374

Yes, it most certainly can but that might not be the specific issue in your case. It can't hurt to get a new CMOS battery just in case.
>>
>>55185374
>>55185400

Here's a test. Go to the bios and turn on the feature to turn on the laptop by plugging in the charger. Then do that instead of using the button.

If it turns on instantly, then it's just your power button that's fucked.
>>
>>55185400

Correct, it will boot immediately without a CMOS battery. It will just complain about time/date every time (and have default CMOS settings).

Well, yeah. I've tried to negotiate with him through an intermediary and his mindset is very.... Chinese.
He wants to make money off this, and does not trust anyone else with any details whatsoever. He does not want a 'community'. He just wants to sell boards, and make sure no one else can do the same.
Honestly, the only reason I paid through the nose for a first-run X62 board was so that, if he walked away from the X62 just like he walked away from the T50 (becuase it was clear it wasn't going to make a profit), I would ahve a board to reverse engineer. Reverse engineering is much much easier than starting from scratch.
All that said, I do hope he succeeds despite himself.

>Because the only people thinking it's worse are autistic.
It's worse because the only reason for the change was change.

Thinkpads have used the same 7-row keyboard layout since 1993. Changing it for a good reason is one thing, changing it only to chase fashion is fucking unforgivable.

"Good implementation is fleeting. Good interfaces last forever."
>>
>>55185735
The layout is objectively worse.

The keys mechanically are fine. They curve in, they have pretty high travel distance. They don't feel like typical chiclet keys.

It depends on what you're using Matlab/Octave for. I guess it is fine for undergraduate level coursework as they should provide you servers anyways if there is any serious workload. Most laptops have only 8GB memory which will cause problems if they just give you any real amounts of data with no environment to process it.

>>55188284
I have GDC Beast V8 (expresscard) and it works fine with my X230. Just be sure to get power supply with enough juice (12V x 5A at least) and a mid to low range GPU that can manage with that and won't max out the expresscard bus too much.

I use Nvidia GTX 750 Ti and I've been pretty happy with the result. With Nvidia Optimus/Prime you can even use the integrated display as output while using the eGPU.

Only trouble was that I started out with too weak power supplies. First one didn't allow booting at all and the second caused random crashes during GPU load.

After having a solid power supply Ubuntu booted normally with the eGPU and offered to install official Nvidia drivers. Everything worked out nicely with no problems on the software side.

Just be sure to turn your laptop off whenever you attach or detach the eGPU expresscard or its cable. Rumor has it that doing it will fry the Beast.
