I have 2 Dell R710's each with 12 cores and 128GB of ram.

I bought them to dick around with in a home lab but I'd like to make some cash with them. Any suggestions? my Internet is too shit for hosting anything
>>
>>55098716
sell them on eBay
>>
>>55098716
you bought machines to host shit from your house but your internet is
too shit' for hosting anything
sounds to be like you are boned have a nice day
>>
>>55098716

I'd host a website at really low rates.
>>
>>55098738
I bought them to test out vmware and I have 10 mbps up (just enough for 1-2 plex users)

They worked great for learning but I'd rather use than sell them
>>
how much did you pay for those
>>
>>55098772
~$1K USD total
>>
>>55098716
the cost of electricity to run them is going to outstrip any income you can make by using them.
>>
>>55098808
Can't we only tell that if we have SOME idea of how much they would earn? Power bill is like $60 a month max for both
>>
>>55098770
That's awful. Maybe serve static webpages, but you won't make significant amounts of money from doing this.
>>
>>55098716
You can't compete with Amazon, so good luck. Those are LGA 1366, right? It's still powerful, but commercially uneconomical.
>>
>>55098785
Oh my god you got ripped the fuck off.
>>
>>55098884
No he didn't. $500 each for two hex cores and 128GB RAM is about right. If he got drives with them, even better.
>>
>>55098716
Bitcoin
>>
>>55098785

I could sell those for 500 and feel like I'm stealing.
>>
>>55098716
Host some game servers for people, or whatever.
>>
>>55098716
So what you're essentially saying is you bought them and now you have nothing to do with them

Great investment
>>
Get a decent internet connection and host for hidden sites

R610 mustard race, I sell monthly vps services
>>

How does the network topology for that look?

Run a bitcoin node

Physical or virtual? Tenants are setup with their own hyperV virtual network (HVN), which is connected to an NVGRE gateway, which had it's front facing virtual nic vlan tagged and routed out via my pfsense router.
>>
>>55101976
HVN? Is that like a vSwitch? How do the clients access and control their VMs?
>>
>>55101994
Hyper-V Network Virtualization (HNV) ** sorry been drinking, it is Microsoft take at softwareach defined networking. Essentially my tenant has a single ip to their virtual network. The nvgre does encapsulation for target/destination. There's a bit more to it but yea,
>>
>>55098716
>>55098770
lol
nobody's going to pay enough for an unreliable server over a weak-ass pipe to even cover the power expenses, just find a use for them yourself or sell them and be done with
>>
>>55098716

Ship 'em off to a colo and offer shell accounts on the VMs.
>>
>>55098785
Dude... you got jipped. Holy fuck.
>>
>>55098979
Yes but what kind of idiot buys 2 500$ servers for dicking around at home. If you google home lab literally everyone has bought theirs second have a nice day. OP must have done absolutley no research a all
>>
>>55098716
What are your speeds?
>>
>>55103336

This. Put them in a colo so the bandwidth increases then you can do stuff for others. Why buy servers without a reason to have them?
>>
>>55103633
Someone that works in IT?

I run a pair of R910's, a trio of R710's, and a VNX5400, and a set of 5 T620's for testing, as well as a pair of T630's for production.

Just because it doesn't work for you, doesn't mean it doesn't work for others.
>>
>>55103370
i can believe it. usually the high ram builds go for more of a premium, and depending on the storage that comes with it that adds up too.

ive been pricing out r710's and other similar shit. real easy to pay $200-300 for an 8-12 core build but they usually have only 32 gigs of ram and maybe 300gb total of hard drive space.

yeah those sas drives and sticks of ram are cheap, but when you need to buy like 8+ of each for one box it adds up.

$500 for an r710 is more common than you think, although i dont think i would spend that much

1600 ecc ddr3 ~$1.75/gb right now in 16 gig modules, and that's used

2x L5640, the cheapest 6 core chip these offered are ~$90 used, the X5680 are ~$300 per pair.

A nice 2u chassis with redundant power supply

He didn't get ripped off but he didn't get a great deal either. The servers are quite long in the tooth but you would still have to work at it to piece something better together for less that is still server grade. Intells cpu iterations have been suck for a long time anyhow, yeah the cpu's are 6 year old models but they are still quite decent. Ram is the bottleneck for a lot of server tasks anyhow and ram speeds and capacities for server gear has littaraly moved at a snales pace so that's compleatly current today, and he's got pretty decent ram capacity too. Pcie 2 kinda weak sauce these days but the server only allows pcie to use 25w anyhow so its not like you can run a decent gpu anyway.

>>55098716
OP you prolly wasted your money not because you got ripped off but because you purchased perishable goods right around there expiration date with no plans on using them to turn a profit. It's like you bought a 12 year old 900k mile semi truck just to park it in your driveway. The things are teetering on the verge of being obsolete and you got no plans on how to recoup your investment. If I where you I would sell them on ebay, you may be able to get more than you paid for them, if not I would still sell to cut my losses.

Here is a perhaps identical listing as your units sold for $340
http://www.ebay.com/itm/291779653219
The seller was a fool or a scoundrel and listed it asis untested so if you list it as tested working you can probably get a bit more than him below are all the sold R710 in the past few months, a few got quite decent prices.

Highly populated and highly modded Minecraft servers are more resource and bandwidth intensive than any other game server.

gime the them thing and i will use it
