will apple ever give a shit about the professional market again or do we just get facebook machines from here on out? Jobs used to fight hard that macs were THE fastest computers on the market but now they just throw any old intel chip in an aluminum case and call it a day.
>>
Depends on the kind of professional, they're still used a lot as work devices but not the same work as they became known for. For media work apple got BTFO years ago partly by not keeping their FCP game up and partly by Adobe getting their shit together
>>
That cylindrical dual Xeon workstation they offer has balls, but for 1/4 the price I can build the same thing with better CPUs, more RAM and bigger drives, user-serviceable components and not have a shit Mac OS.
>>
>>55092790

I'm talking more creative professional stuff. They definatley blew it with FCPX though. A lot of video editors, including me, switched to PC after that and I was a big FCP shill back in the day.
>>
>>55092837
The Mac Pro 6,1 is single socket, which is gay, and no you cannot build a better thing for less without forgoing all of the things that make a workstation a workstation.
>>
>>55092754
they expect development to happen on servers and not on internet-connected portable devices
>>

What's wrong with FCPX?

you CAN build a better thing for less though. Maybe not when the Mac Pro was first released but that was years ago now.
>>
>>55092843
I shoot stills a lot and never bothered with a macbook, partly because I worked in IT and lurked /g/ so knew they weren't essential.

Only media professionals I see still using macs are photographers and the odd low end videographer these days. I assisted for someone before who used to bring an imac on set with him for editing videos, I suppose they have better things to be worried about then the specs or potential of their editing benches
>>
>>55092875

just became more like "iMovie Pro" when it first came out and abandoned a lot of the stuff I worked so hard to learn and master. Granted I will say now it's better and if you don't edit in FCP on a mac you're a fucking fool thanks to all the tight integration with the hardware and background rendering.

Like I said, the thing you build for less is not a workstation. It doesn't have a Xeon, doesn't have workstation graphics, doesn't have ECC, etc.

The Mac Pro is dated as a workstation, but you aren't building better out of consumer parts.

No, you simply cannot. Not today, not when it was introduced. Apple gets bulk discounts for the RAM, CPU, GPUs, case and everything.

If they didn't have that, they couldn't sell it and make a profit.

What if it was as user-upgradable as old Mac Pros?

the one thing is FCP 7 was based in Carbon and Carbon could only do so much, i mean hell Final Cut Studio 3 could only be a 32bit application because of the limitations of the Carbon Framework.

They wrote FCP X from scratch using the basis of the iMovie remake as the base for it's building up. Which is why it didn't have any support for EDL and OMF at release.

I switched to Adobe Premiere myself as well when FCPX came out it was just not good and was a from group up rewrite and CS 6 Premiere had amazing support with After Effects and Motion graphics support and integration for assets generation in illustrator and photoshop.

But 5 years now into it FCP X finally added things EDL and OMF support as well as importing old FCP files in with third party XML readers. The real time rendering and made deals to get better support with things like color grading with third party applications.

But basically Apple had to white slate the entire thing and start from scratch which from the fact they were the biz to be for video was pretty fucking brave
