Hey /g/, my laptop stopped booting the other day and I'm pretty sure the hard drive is dead, could you guys help me confirm? I removed the drive and connected it to my desktop via USB/SATA cable. Here's what I've tried and the error's I've gotten:

In my computer, trying to open the drive says it's not accessible and gives one of two errors, either that the request failed due to a fatal hardware error, or that the parameter is incorrect. Right clicking and going into properties and error checking returns that the check cannot be performed b/c windows cannot access the disk. Properties also says that there are 0 bytes of used and free space.

Western Digital Diagnostic:
quick test doesn't complete, it says that was interrupted by a hard or soft reset
extended test reads that the test found bad sectors that may be repairable.

Seatools:
SMART test, pass
short drive self test, fails at 10%
short generic test, fails at 46%
long generic test, fails at 0%

Is there any way I can recover the files on the drive?
Any recommendations on what brand to replace it with?

Head crash!

Stop fucking testing it, you're only making things worse. Unplug it until you're ready to try a recovery.

What's a good free recovery software ?

>recovery software
That is for undeleting files.
If you cant get the drive to give you access to your files you are going to need to try a pcb replacement or a head replacement.
you should probably attempt neither of them, especially the head replacement.

Data recovery shops can be expensive, but you might want to look into that.
Also if you do change the parts out, remember to only use the drive long enough to get the data off of it. Afterwards the drive is to never be trusted again.

give r-studio a try, you'll have to swashbuckle it however

does critical master file table files are corrupt tell you anything?
>>
>>55084064
.. that shouldnt happen.
I dont think you should have even had access to the master file table files..
Are you familiar with linux?
If so, get a DIFFERENT harddrive that is LARGER than the one that just crashed.
instal linux (live cd it I dont give a fuck)
then download photorec (its packaged in some other shit now).
photorec is goat. its command line only, and setting it up to recover only certain files is not overly obvious at first, but set it up for the files types you want back and set the destination for the NEW drive.

Just a heads up, photorec will recover everything, even 10x10 thumbnails, so you will net A TON OF SHIT.
There might be others out there that can recover file names. Either way youre not in for a fun time.

Never used linux

i haven't let chkdsk in window's command line run all the way yet. I have to give the cable back to someone tomorrow and I'm afraid it won't finish by the time I have to leave.

I did find this though on the TestDisk site(also came with photorec):

Repair An NTFS MFT

The MFT (Master File Table) is sometimes corrupted. If Microsoft's Checkdisk (chkdsk) failed to repair the MFT, run TestDisk. In the Advanced menu, select your NTFS partition, choose Boot, then Repair MFT. TestDisk will compare the MFT and MFT mirror (its backup). If the MFT is damaged, it will try to repair the MFT using the backup. If the MFT backup is damaged, it will use the main MFT.

If both MFT and MFTMirr are damaged and thus cannot be repaired using TestDisk, you might want to try commercial software like Zero Assumption Recovery, GetDataBack for NTFS or Restorer 2000.

Look its dead m8. There is no program you can run that is going to magically make it work again. You allready got the best advice you are going to get in this thread. Time to start accepting that you inflation porn collection is gone and move on with your life. Maybe next time you will actually back up you data.

Honestly I would trust testdisc to unfuck the drive more than I would chkdsk.
chkdsk doesnt fix anything half of the time, and even then it takes years to do anything.
photrec and test disc are made by the same people.
