Why do web browsers implement tabs? Isn't that just duplicating window manager functionality?

And why can't your window manager deal with that?

that's true

so we still don't have a window manager that handles hundreds of windows well

Because web browsers could develop the feature without having to cooperate with every special snowflake window manager in the world, and because the most commonly used operating systems installed on 90%+ of the world's desktop PCs are not running window managers which support tabs.

The protocols application use to open new windows doesn't provide the functionality needed for a pleasant tabbed browsing experience. A window manager could assume any new re-sizable window from an application should be tabbed, but that would only be an assumption, and would break in other situations or have to be a toggleable hack.

Fortunately good browsers allow you to disable tabs.

tabs were invented in an era when internet explorer 6 on windows xp was running on 99.9999999% of all computers connected to the internet and every site had popup ads and
<a target="_blank">
would open a new fucking window

also window managers didn't exist

interestingly apparently Apple are adding system wide tab support to all applications in their new version of OS X which is now called macOS because tim cook like penis
>>
Because when I'm trying to pick which one of fifty fucking knives to buy I really don't want to go all the way down to the task bar and look up and down the list of fifty windows I have open and try to find which one is the one I want to check next.

I'm sure other people think the same way.

you have a shit window manager

>>55076548
KDE/KWin and basically any tiling wm has had this for like a decade or more
>>
>>55073884
That's exactly what it is. These days the trend is that almost all programs implement their own non-standard window management with tabs.

On the other hand it's the window managers' fault since almost none of them handle hundreds of open windows intelligently. Manual grouping and scrolling for the task bar would be pretty much enough.
>>
Window managers suck too much at actually managing your windows. Especially when you're a pleb that doesn't know keyboard shortcuts.

So what do you do?
>>
>>55077776
Get a better window manager, like xmonad
>>
>>55078216
Yeah, but browser vendors can't just tell that to their users.
>>
>>55073884
Better user experience in general via separating concerns? Allowing the user to minimise the entire browser rather than having things in 50 different windows to open? Allowing for shortcuts to cycle through only open tabs instead of all programs?

Plenty of benefits with no drawbacks.
>>
>>55073884
I don't know about you, but I prefer the way my browser handles tabs to the way my window manager handles windows, and vice versa.

Sweet, bro.
