I just made a complete transition on my main PC from botnet 10 to Mint 17.

What is your opinion on mint or all Linux distributions /g/?
>>
It's cancer
>>
>>55067224
>all I do with my PC is surf the 'net
No one really cares what you use.
>>
>>55067224
Not using mint right now but it's fine. What will you use it for?
>>
>>55067256
I use it to play vydia, do some homework, and browse the web.
>>55067265
Well pretty much anything that allows for it, except Photoshop, I can't use GIMP to save my life.
>>
>>55067224
The devs don't care about security.
https://lwn.net/Articles/676664/

But other than that, it is a great distro. Lots of people love it. I use Lubuntu. But all linux distros are mostly the same except for the DE.

Good luck tripbro!
>>
>>55067355
First time I went into the Linux world was back in Ubuntu 10.

I couldn't get it to work like I wanted to.

I heard that Mint was a great distribution, so I decided to give it a shot.
>>
>>55067224
Change to *buntu and you will be just fine. Mint has security controversy, it delays security updates.
>>
>>55067285
You aren't going to be playing any vidya on that buddy.

Also mint 18 is about to be released, you can get much more updated software from it.

>>55067445
Huh
Question is which one runs Wine better?
I don't mind the lesser security.
>>
>>55067224

Good on you Anon. Shut out botnet dependency.
Now, Linux Mint I have no problems with, baby steps instead of trial by fire.

Running WINE is mostly distro independant. But configuring WINE is actually hard work. You'd be better off dualbooting for games.

For other things like office etc. you can run virtualbox

Reminder that people use Linux because they want security and privacy
>>
>>55067465
Thanks anon

>>55067471
I will as soon as it comes out.
Hopefully soon.

How good is Arch-linux?
>>
>>55067495
Yeah I am figuring that out, I tried to install some windows software using wine, but it's a bitch for me as a beginner to he honest
>>
>>55067466
Question is which one runs Wine better?
I guess it's about the same, use playonlinux to manage your wine bottles, also helps you to set up a lot of common programs.
Consider that mint 17 is based on 14.04 so the software is from that date (april 2014) with bug fixing and security patches.
>>
>>55067491
And how is steamOS, mint?
>>
>>55067525
Huh, what about "crossfade" or something like that, I can't remember the correct name.

Is the licence worth it?
>>
>>55067509
Wine it's easy if you know what you're doing, there's other programs that helps you a lot like playonlinux or crossover. Reverse engineering and re-implementing the windows APIs is not an easy work, there's a new dev version every two weeks and there can be regressions. You can set up a bottle even per program and use the version it worked the best for it with POL. Remember only DX9 is well implemented, DX10-11 is WIP. Good luck.
>>
>>55067538
SteamOS is a tweaked debian ready for retailers on console-like devices. You can do the same with a linux distro, the difference is that steamOS is ready to be used as a console ootb.
>>
>>55067554
IMO playonlinux is better than crossover but by buying crossover you support the developers of wine, also it automatizes a lot of things for you. I'd buy it for supporting the developers but that's up to you.
>>
I'm a fan of Ubuntu MATE myself.
>>
>>55067603
I see , then it's worth it.

As soon as my paycheck comes through, I'll buy it.

I need the automation to make my software easier to deploy.
>>
>>55067728
Is it any good? What are its flaws?
>>
>>55067603
>paying for software
That's not very free as in freedom of you
>>
>>55067812
I am happy to support any developer as long as the software is accessible and it's actually really good.
>>
>>55067224
Why aren't you using Beta 18? Its very stable and has an updated kernel. You'll be able to upgrade from beta to the release version next month.
>>
>>55067870
Ill give it a shot when I get home. I am actually running some errands.

Any other major improvement?
>>
>>55067463
Don't be a lying faggot. I'm using mint right now and Steam works fine. CS:GO with no issues.
>>
>>55067889
Updated Cinnamon and Mate. A lot of under-the-hood updates. X-Apps. I actually use the Mate edition because of speed and functionality. Cinnamon is mostly eye candy anyway. Here's a general list.

I have been using 17.2 for almost 6 months now. The main reason I installed it was for my uni projects and it has performed very well to that end.

I haven't used it very much for vidya because it freezes every hour or so. Strangely, shutting my laptop and re-opening it unfreezes it.

I had windows on my laptop initially but it ran like complete shit. Constant 100% disk usage out-of-the box and it took 5 mins to start up. Mint is far from perfect but it has been a significant improvement over windows. Wish I had the time to customise it more and fix it up.
>>
>>55068038
you seem confused. CS:GO is vidya. That which you claimed could not be played. I hope that helps.
>>
>>55068056
what kind of GPU you got? And that windows CPU shit is due to some sort of bug. I had to search and search till i found and update that fixed it. Throwing an SSD in your system can possibly make a big difference too. Don't let these other assholes fool you, its not a meme. Just don't buy a shit drive because its cheap.

I've been using it for 2 days now

It's been a bitch to install any Windows programs. But overall I am liking it a lot.
>>
>>55067977
I'll check that out when I get home.

>>55067992
It's decent imho, could be worse. The search bar comes in handy.

>>55067224
I switched Ubuntu about 10 years ago, I dual booted for about a year as I learned the basics and software equivalents then I realized how slow and clunky windows is and it became a pain to use, I moved to Linux Mint because it is even easier and fuck Unity.
>>
>>55068491
Kek I heard unity really sucked. I am liking mint, the feel reminds me of Windows xp
>>
>>55067812
That's not how it works, remember the free as in beer != free as in freedom. In fact is encouraged to use free software for business even if you can't put restrictions on how it's distributed the software itself. You can use free software to provide services and make profit from it. For example collabora is a company that makes business by providing supported versions of different pieces of open source software like libreoffice. They're a big contributor of Libreoffice: https://www.collaboraoffice.com/
>>
>>55068056
That's strange it sounds like a pretty nasty bug if it's not a hardware failure.

>>55067992
I liked the mint menu more (i think is the default in the mate edition), however i think there's other menu applets you can download.
>>
>>55068610

Or you can ship fickle and borderline broken software and charge out the ass for support like Red Hat does
>>
>>55068669
I don't know if it's actually bad as you claim but ye, you can also charge for support, i has been working fine for red hat.

>>
>>55068527
There will be little things that will take hours to figure out, in order to get quick help use the irc under a girls name and if you get twodogs, he is an asshole.
>>
>>55067224
I've spent a couple of years sporadically trying different linux distros and DE's. I've primarily used Arch and *Buntu based distros and am currently settled on *Buntus.

No reason in particular, I've noticed that although there are more packages on the AUR+Arch Repos, the packages on the Ubuntu repos tend to be more stable, however this may be anecdotal.

>Gnome 3
feels like OSX done poorly. Not good for my workflow as someone who grew up using windows.
>KDE Plasma
was really nice, but it felt sort of sluggish. Not a fan of the programs it comes bundled with. Using GTK shit for years really makes it hard to transition
>LXDE
Too barebones
>LXQT
See above, also prefer GTK to QT because of my familiarity.
>Cinnamon
Used it for a while, stopped using it when I discovered XFCE
>Unity
Never touched it
>XFCE
Thus far my favorite. It's lightweight while not being as barebones as LXDE. It's GTK so you can theme it to look really nice, and it comes out of the box with a windows-like workflow. Whisker Menu is also probably the best start menu.

What is your problem?

It better not be systemd.
