There's nothing wrong with Java applications. It's no more "unsafe" than C++. The danger comes from using Java plugins which are exploitable. Just don't install them and no one uses them. Otherwise, nothing wrong with them.

I installed java a couple months ago for some shitty web applet on my bank website needed to scan checks, then forgot to remove it.
Two weeks later I found a bitcoin miner in my firefox's appdata folder which no anti-malware detected or removed.
Fuck java.
What do you need Java for? Java is a major security vulnerability (Not to be confused with Javascript).

I'm a Java developer and I don't think there's a reason to install it if you aren't one. Java is mostly used on the server side, applets have been dead for over a decade and the few desktop apps written in it generally come with a bundled JRE.

Java browser plugins were a bad idea and even the most die hard Java evangelists would admit to this.
Java has a lot of controversy because oracle is evil and because it's installer comes with bundled shitware. OpenJVM is perfectly capable and Stallman himself said it was good.
If you want to write high performance scalable server software Java is one of the best choices.

Personally I like Java (to develop with) however installing the JRE is shit. I make my own portable JDK/JRE though rather than use the awful Oracle installer. That way if I want Java gone I can just delete the folder and thats it. No temp files, no horrible hooks into the registry, etc. It also makes having multiple versions installed easy with just a batch file to setup the environment for each version I want, that way they dont conflict with each other and are restricted to just that command prompt instance. DESU all software should work this way.
