Assembling a system like Arch/Gentoo is always an alternative to installing a Distro, but how can a Distro be trusted if 99.9% of it's users have no idea how to audit or analyze the source code?

fuck the users
Because other people have audited the source code.
For example, in Debian, Before packages are added they are reviewed. Most of the default software is audited as well.
Arch and especially the AUR cannot be trusted.
Lead Arch developer got hacked like 5 times. Lmao

Because you can verify if binary packages have been tampered with and we have extensive discussions over open source software's actual code over the internet.

and systemd opens sockets at boot time
and it's a mass of complexity that's likely concealing several bugs
and keeps the philosophy of hiding the system from the user, this time forcibly so

Not arch/gentoo, its only Gentoo GNU/Linux.
Gentoo is the only distro where your not relying on a package maintainer, you compile the source yourself.
