I'll start the thread off with a good windows firewall.

TinyWall
https://tinywall.pados.hu/

TinyWall is simple, effective, and low on resources.
Best of all, its offered free of charge.

PeerBlock is pretty useful.
http://peerblock.com/

When most people think of PeerBlock, they think of something used when torrenting. And its often mentioned that when used in that manner, it is merely having a placebo effect.

However when configured correctly PeerBlock can keep your computer safe from malicious sites, malware connections (if you happen to get infected) and even snooping. Thats right, it can even prevent Microsoft from collecting any data from you

This imgur album explains how to configure PeerBlock correctly.

UXTheme Multi-Patcher helps with customization probably more than any other program.

http://www.windowsxlive.net/uxtheme-multi-patcher/

When used to patch your UXTheme.dll, it enables you to use "unsigned" visual styles.
Normally you wouldn't be able to do this & would only be able to use official Microsoft visual styles.

You an find these visual styles, made by normal users, at many places including the following link.
http://www.deviantart.com/browse/all/customization/skins/windows/visualstyle/?order=9
Installing them is as simple as copying/pasting. And they are all free.

I updated to 10 a few months ago. I still don't have a reason to stay here though and sometimes I miss ricing. Yes, I miss doing that. Tampering with shit without fear that the next update is going to break it. How many of you are staying / went back to 7 or 8.1?
>>
Ninite can help when you're wanting to start fresh & install everything you need/want easily & quickly.

site: https://ninite.com/

It allows you to create a custom installer which can download & install all the selected programs you wanted.
This way you don't need to keep track of multiple setup files or worry about keeping them up-to-date.

Sure, but the botnet cannot be fully disabled anyways, stopping windows updates would also be detrimental considering windows 10 is still pretty much in what sensible people would call "beta" and ricing is a monumental pain in the butthole.

>>

thats simply not true, a firewall or even peerblock totally stop any connections you do not want
>b...but you dont have da source codes!!
the source code is not needed to see what software does
memory viewers, disassemblers, and reverse engineering is a thing

I get sick of linux cucks try to force that windows simply cannot be "fixed" and that you're powerless and the only option is to switch to an operating system mainly meant for servers

Heres something for the Firefox users (fuck chrome, garbage for normies)

MozBackup
http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/

If you're like me, you've probably got Firefox EXACTLY the way you want it & you have endless amounts of website credentials saved on it.

MozBackup is a program that costs nothing & creates a backup file of your Firefox profile, every last detail. So you can create this backup file, save it to a USB drive & ALWAYS be able to restore everything exactly the way you want it to every single fresh install of Firefox.

No, Windows 7 Ultimate is the best version of Win7
While Windows 10 the best version is Enterprise
You have to be careful though
Updating Window 7 & selecting optional updates can lead to having the windows 10 data collection crap on your Win7 ultimate

Protip: you can drag files in Explorer with the right mouse button, and it will open a context menu with your shell extensions at the destination folder. I somehow missed out on this for 20 years until I went and read the Windows 95 user's manual the other day.

>>55026078
Didn't people at least get the forced update to windows 10 from recommended updates instead of optional?

Done forcefully without consent. God damn.
>>
>>55026094
not exactly
people who had Win7 activated by Daz or toolkit totally ignored the forced update
also if you set a reg key from a 0 to 1, it would totally stop
but yeah, eventually, with automatic updates on AND set to "DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL" instead of just "DOWNLOAD" then yes, you get fucked

MY reccommendations:
>Web Browser
Firefox, Chrome if you're too deep into the Google ecosystem.

Deluge

GIMP for more complex tasks.

Auslogics Disk Defrag is the best defrag tool with a bevvy of options including using TRIM on SSD's, and putting OS files at the fastest part of a HDD if you're using one.
WinDirStat is great for seeing what's using space on your disk.
Notepad++ is a great lightweight text editor for programmers.
KeePass 2 is great if you're not great at password managment.
>Security
Install in this order if you need them:
>TinyWall
>PeerBlock
>An Adblocker, uBlock Origin or ABP.
>An Antivirus: ClamWinPortable for a non-installed AV, MSE (on win7), or Avast (make sure to set it on game mode).
I avoid installing an AV if at all possible, an adblocker works surprisingly well in stopping stupid people getting viruses.
>>
>>55026405
>Adblocker
ill add that along with ABP
you can install

Adblock Plus Pop-up Addon:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/adblock-plus-pop-up-addon/

Basically just kills even the worst of the sneaky pop ups /pop unders & other bullshit that can sneak by

AND

Adblock Plus Element Hiding Helper Addon:
https://adblockplus.org/elemhidehelper

Allows you to select anything on the page, with your mouse, and instantly create a rule to permanently block it away.
Especially great for those "We see you're using an adblocker" boxes, kill those fuckers in 1 click

Anyways, Microsoft's EMET is a great way to harden the operating system:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2458544

The best way I can describe it is that it's MS's version of grsecurity, although it works on blacklist model by default. I don't use windows, but this software is pretty interesting because it's been known to stop exploits in the past. Does anyone here use it?

Recomended software:

"Everything" -- a search program that's extremely quick. It's a free program.

https://www.voidtools.com/

"Active Presenter" -- A nice screen recording tool that can export .web and .mp4. Lets you choose a custom area of the screen or the whole screen. The free version doesn't have watermarks when exporting .webm or .mp4 and doesn't have ads and can be used indefinitely. Choose new project then the top option on the splash screen to record video, use the icon in the taskbar to stop recording then choose "export" and the video option in the program's ribbon. It has basic editing functions but you can't change the canvas resolution after taking a recording (it has good compression options when exporting, too). It's designed for making presentations and has a bunch of editing tools. Attached image is a record of my laptop screen with the export quality at 80%

What is a good distro for a beginner?

>>
>>55040072
The popular distro is called 7 enterprise.
It has features like turning on and off updates.
The DE is a bit like mate, but without features and using a lot more resources.
A new competitor to 7 is 10.
It includes a lot of features you might have used the past twenty years in linux and a mycroft clone which only does bing search for some reason.
The 10 enterprise gives you the ability to turn off updates temporarily and should be fine for most new users needs.
It also uses a lot less resources than the 7 distro.

Not entirely related to the thread, but I planned to make myself a Windows VM for gaming (with my usual OS being Linux).
Should I try XP or 7? XP should be lighter, but I'm not sure if I will miss out on some games if I don't use 7.
I am unable to do VGA passthrough, so the whole thing will honestly be mostly used for games with low system requirements that don't work on Wine. This also probably limits potential DX10/11 games I can play quite a lot.

what's stopping you from dual booting?
>>
>>55045432
I do dual boot at the moment, but I basically stopped ever rebooting into Windows, since it's bothersome to do so, it loads really slow (being an old system that I used plenty before I switched), and afterwards I have to reboot back.
Wine is literally less bothersome than rebooting like that.
A Windows VM might be a good compromise for my VNs which refuse to load on Wine. It's not like they use advanced graphics, or anything.
How light can Win7 be stripped? Is there something like TinyXP for Win7, or is it possible to strip it from bloat (and some crucial features) myself?

Grab a cheap as fuck SSD and toss Windows on it. Give no fucks for the read/write since it was cheap to begin with and you're only using it for games. Edit the registry so shutdown/restart is only seconds.

>SSD
I'm a poorfag student using a laptop (albeit a relatively good one, but it's not like it was me who bought it). Not an option. Also, a third-world country too, so what's cheap for you is tons of dosh for me.
Also, rebooting is just bothersome, even if it loads fast. I have to quit all my programs, abandon all my browser tabs/music playlists I'm currently in the middle of, deal with being unable to actually read anything on my Linux partition (unless I want to risk it with shady drivers) and, the most important one, make a decision whether I want to bother reloading every time I feel like playing a game.
>registry
Didn't know that one. Can you really make it load faster by something like that?
>Embedded
Never actually heard of that one before. Will look into it.
>msconfig + regedit + group policy editor
An option, but will probably require tons of Googling. I was wondering if there is something which already has all the bloat surgically removed by the enthusiasts.
Well, I need to look into Embedded. Embedded 7 with some regediting might just do the trick.
