What's /g/'s opinion on meme fans? Why are they so popular?
>>
>>55024536
Is it the colors?
>>
Are noctua fans actually good though?
>>
>>55024536
Cougar fans perform almost as good for like a third the price. And that's only recently, some of Noctua's older fans had worse specs while still being more expensive.
>>
>>55024536
Quiet as shit. Keeps my CPU at 21 degrees.
>>
>>55024536
It's not a meme when you have empirical data
>>
>>55024547
Their heatsinks are good but it really just comes down to them making bigger ones. Their fans are well and above anything you'd find on Ebay or stock in most cases but they're overpriced for what they are.
>>
>>55024547
i dont know but everyone has them
>>
Nidec/Gentle Typhoon, Panaflo, Sanyo Denki San Ace, Delta > Noctua meme fans any day
>>
They're basically a scam.

Hear me out. Your paying for a high price inferior cooler. Oh yes they're well designed, well engineered, good warranty. But its an air cooler. Depreciated technology. For the same price (or ~$30 more depending) you can get a top tier closed loop water cooler.

Its a meme product for plebs
>>
>>55024634
Water coolers require fans, you degenerate.
>>
>>55024634
You're a fucking idiot
>>
its the best performing aircooler, and competes with midranged AIO coolers for twenty dollars less
>>
Not completely related, but I live in Alaska, so would I be OK by removing every single fan in my computer and just leaving the heatsinks?
>>
>>55024634
youre probably watercooling your 3rd gen i5 or someshit not worth watercooling
>>
>>55024536
Didnt realise you classed them as meme.

Personally I buy them (or bought) as theyre quiet as fuck and are rated as one of the best
>>
>>55024634
>Cougar
Go back to /v/ please you dumb fucking idiot
>>
>>55024547
Best fans you can buy but too expensive even for their performance

Of course that doesn't stop me

I use 3x120mm P12s as front intake because of the higher static pressure which can deal with dust filters and restrictive front panel much better than regular case fans
>>
This shit looks dope, yo
>>

I think you replied to the wrong person anon. Also.

Cougar are just low cost chink fans.

Noctua have the best warranty and actually work at low voltages. Shit like Cougar would be lucky to start up at like 30% fan speed.

If you have a wind tunnel and blast the fans at 100% all the time then there's usually little difference. Everything is loud and moves a lot of air at high RPMs.

What does that even matter when they're so quiet to begin with? Even at half speed, fucking seven of them don't even hit 30db yet you can still feel solid air movement. At max speed they barely hit 35db.

They're a meme if you don't have some way to control fan curves.

the 3 stock fans i stuck up top are off unless the temps go above 65c

intakes and cpu fans are always on

The 2 at the bottom will eventually be controlled by either a 1080 strix, some kind of AIO solution, or a custom loop for the gpu.
>>

I planned to get the Corsair Carbide Quiet 400Q how are the stock fans in it?

or should I go with some "Corsair Airflow Performance Edition" fans?

I want it to run quiet.
>>
Silent CPU coolers when?

My NH-D14 becomes loud during games
>>
I went with a Noctua 'cause it's quiet and the benchmarks were good. Good meme.
>>
I have 4 BeQuiet! Silent Wings 2 fluid dynamic 140mm fans in my case and 2 noctua fans on my Noctua CPU cooler. They're all equally quiet at 800-900 rpm and apparently their lifespan is ~200 000 hours which is ~30 years.
Worth the price imo.

Delid.
The paste on the die after i opened mine up wasn't even on the die anymore, it ended up flowing off to the sides of it and it was just die to heat spreader at that point.
Use Coolaboratory ultra on the die and reseal it after testing temps.

>Huh? i said im using NH-D14
Sorry, missed that. Even 72c at full load is bretty good. I think my 212evo gets to like 85 if I run Prime95. You probably just put too much paste on or didn't tighten the heatsink enough or something stupid.
>>
>>55030333
Vice method is super easy, ive done it 4 times with no issues. CPUs are fairly strong as long as its not memelake.
My first 3570k hit 5ghz at 85c 1.38v
My 4790k is having some heat issues where it wont even do 4.7ghz 1.3v without going over 80c, haswell is just hot as fuck.
>>
>>55030463
>You probably just put too much paste on or didn't tighten the heatsink enough

I just re pasted and mounted the heatsink properly half an hour ago, that was not it

The cpu is four years old, thats probably the reason why it runs hotter now

a) Because they're really fucking good.

b) Great customer support.

c) The fact that they're good caused a lot of hype and attracted a lot of dumbs.

Noctua's shit really is damn good. I've got a D15 and I'm overjoyed with it. I looked at every option I had at the time -- indeed, I could have paid less for something which is very similar -- perhaps just as good, but the D15 was only marginally more expensive. And I have every guarantee of stellar performance and extremely silent operation. Also a huge compatibility list on their website covering nearly every fucking motherboard out there, so I knew in advance how it would fit on my old p67 board.

So your real question is, why are they so popular when other manufacturers don't really lag behind that much? Well, look at "c". Not everyone wants to explore the market. They want to slap that thing in there so their dipshit video games can work better. They take a look at their options and everyone is screaming at them to get a Noctua. So they do. And then Noctua's popularity persists because all the hype they built, they built on actual quality.

They're fans that prioritize silence.

I built my PC three years ago, my cooler is a Hyper 212 Evo. Performance wise, it's a nice cooler, but the stock fan was loud as shit while playing m-muh games.

I put an NF-F12 on it. I can't hear it unless I literally open the side panel and stick my ear up to it. Performance wise? It's about 1 degree cooler.

I guess the only downside is the fact that the entire cooler was about $38 and the one Noctua fan came to $20. If you're going to do the same, just get a NH-D15.

I'd recommend them if you aren't autistic about aesthetics, are autistic about sound or just want to spend money for slightly better cooling.
>>
>>55025547
I've had a 120mm cougar vortex for almost three years now running 24/7, it's the most quiet fan I have, almost inaudible (over other fans) at about 10v.
Cougar might be chinkmade ripoff designs but the fans themselves don't hold much to joke about.

Now, I haven't owned a noctua 120mm, but I was unbelievably unimpressed by a twin set of 80mm (needed some 80mm fans for a really old prebuilt case) noctuas I bought. Just as loud, moved just as much air as another pair of cheap as fucking shit coolermaster 80mms, the only difference was the power draw.
If the 120mm design is just a scaled up 80mm design or vice versa, which from the data sheets and marketing it appears to be, then I will never buy Noctua.
>>
>>55024536
Because they are very well performing and high quality fans with good warranty, easy installation and features. Most manufacturers have catched up here though but Noctua was kinda the first manufacturer to do them well. They supposedly have a new model coming out.
